The Google Earth Contraversy
This morining the "Today Show" reported on the Google Earth Contraversy that is starting. I think someone may have mentioned this slightly when they mentioned in another post that you could see soldiers in Iraq, but could not see Bush's ranch in crawford. Some in the military are now complaining that you can see their positions on this site.

I have now problem with the military complaining about the site and worrying about their safety. However, the story that was done this morning seem to be completely stupid to me. The reporter who did the story pointed out that everything on the site was acturate and that even though the pictures were a year old the planes were still in the same place and not much had changed at the airbase since the picture had been taken. It seem to me that the report did more damage than the pictures in that even if people saw the airbase they had no way of know if the pictures were real or acturate. The reporter could have just said the pictures were a year old and left out the part about whether things had changed.

1. I'm not sure why there is a Contraversy.
Now I'm not using 'Google Earth' because I'm at work but I am using the map function they have which has the low level details and it looks to be that in the suburb I'm living in this map is at LEAST 2 years if not 3 years old.

If that is the case for Google Earth and the images are outdated I do not see how this hurts the military and its current deployment.

11. Ability to Attack
Some in the military say that the insurgents could learn where military bases are and attack the bases. So some in the military think the program puts the military at risk.

6. They aren't changed hourly or anything. DOD probably hates it...
...because it cuts the edge they have with their super expensive spy satellites severely.

Now anyone can get a bird's eye view of the world for free.

Suck it, Pentagon.
