If they could even do it. While China is rapidly modernizing their military, Taiwan's military already is modern (thanks to us) and China's pitiful navy would have to bring troops across the straits while the Taiwan air force was bombing them.

15. Your classic "no win" military nightmare.

China's missles are well within range of 250MM Chinese in their industrialized Southern/Coastal Provinces. They may not like each other, but I would find it hard to believe that China would initiate action against Taiwan. All downside...no upside. And vice-versa.

Now, would we ignite a war between Taiwan and China? Like a sub missle launch in the Taiwan Straits? 2 missles...one to China and 1 to Taiwan? Who knows what the neo-con nuts are capable of.

5. There is a get-China angle to much of what Bush is doing.

China had agreements with Iraq to develop two large oilfields (for which they would be the primary if not exclusive consumer). Then Bush invaded Iraq and voided those contracts. China then negotiated a similar deal with Iran (it's hurting for that oil) and now Bush is threatening Iran. Iran might soon face UN trade sanctions against its oil exports over this nuclear program issue, or possibly worse. Bush and his gang obviously would like to overthrow the government in Tehran, maybe even through invasion as in Iraq. China would certainly find its goals of oil exploration frustrated again, all contracts ripped up and the concessions awarded to American and other western firms.
It makes you wonder if at some point China is going to get its back up and start retaliating. As in, "Hands off Iran" or words to that effect.

8. China is just wearing us down long-term

there is no need to resort to biological or nuclear war. they already have our country by the 'nads as it is. Unlike the instant gratification of the US, Chinese leaders are patient and look long term... they see Chinese world leadership as inevitable as well, the rising sun. (yes, I know that is the symbol of the Japanese empire.)

China has their hawks that need to posture & act tough, just like our War President says "bring it on"
