WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Members of the Evangelical Church Alliance, America's oldest association of Evangelical clergy, were challenged at their annual meeting being held this week in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, to come to Washington, DC, next month during US Senate confirmation hearings for Judge John G. Roberts.
The Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK) addressed conferees this morning issuing a "Macedonian Cry," a reference to a passage in the New Testament recording a dream that St. Paul had in which a man from the country of Macedonia begged him to come over and help by preaching the Christian Gospel.
"God has given Evangelicals a platform in this country to speak prophetically and we dare not miss it," Schenck said during his 45-minute talk.
Schenck was an organizer of large-scale prayer vigils and demonstrations in Montgomery, Alabama during the controversy over a Ten Commandments display and in Pinellas Park, Florida in front of the hospice where brain injury victim Terri Schiavo died.
Clergy of all Christian traditions are being asked by Schenck's group, Faith and Action, and the Christian Defense Coalition to come to Washington for any amount of time between September 4 and September 15 to help lead prayer, preach at rallies and join in news conferences related to the Roberts' confirmation process.
