Ben Konop:
Yesterday, I filed a public interest lawsuit against Convergys Corporation alleging that they, in essence, bilked Ohio taxpayers out of $200,000 thanks to shoddy oversight by the Taft Administration (shocking, I know).
In 2000, Convergys received a $200,000 dollar job training grant from the State of Ohio funded by general taxpayer revenue. In return for the grant money, Convergys pledged to create one thousand jobs at their Toledo call center facility on South Byrne and use the funds for worker training. Convergys also promised that the average salary of the workers at the Toledo facility would be nearly ten dollars per hour. Convergys failed to live up to these promises, however, creating only half of the agreed upon number of jobs, paying the workers less than ten dollars per hour, and failing to provide substantive job training.
In 2003, Convergys announced that it was closing the Toledo facility and then outsourced the jobs from Toledo to overseas, most likely to India. To add insult to injury, Convergys violated the law by not refunding the $200,000 of taxpayer money it received back to the citizens of Ohio. Sadly, the Taft administration failed to take any action against Convergys to defend the rights of Ohio's taxpayers and workers.
