Do Americans want health care as badly as they wanted the "No Call"??
If "we" can pressure the admin and congress enough to get this legislation passed so quickly and with such broad support, WHY won;t they hear our plea for national , single payer healthcare..???

Apparently the telemarketers have shitty lobbyists....

We have wanted/needed/begged for decent health care since...FOREVER, and yet they can never seem to "get around to it".. Maybe we should follow the strategy used in THIS case to get them off their ASSES..and finally DO something ..:)

1. That's an interesting question
I guess the way I feel about it, the no call list is a no-brainer. Something that can be done easily and without worrying where the money will come from. While I want health care even more, that's something that's going to take real debate about how it ought to be done.

But, you've asked a great question.

2. I think you hit the nail on the head
"Apparently the telemarketers have shitty lobbyists"

Don't have time now but check into how much the pharmaceutical, health care and insurance corporations are putting into campaign coffers as an "investment." That's why we'll never see real reform.

In my mind, it's not just a question of who's paying for it. It's also a question of why it costs so much. We spend more per capita on health care than any nation yet we still have higher infant mortality rates. Why does the exact same drug cost less in Canada? Those are the real issues in this debate.

3. Three reasons I can think of:
1.There's more money in the health-insurance and pharm lobbies than there is in the telemarketing lobby.
2. A Do Not Call registry is pretty cheap to implement; single-payer health care would cost more (even though it might save $ in the long run).
3. Most people want something to be done about health care, not but not everyone wants national single-payer programs. True, not everyone likes the no-call list, but it has much more popular support, from people of all ideological stripes, than nat'l health.

4. Different demographics, affluent want no call, poor want health care

The affluent can afford health care, so it is not an issue for them.

The poor are less likely to receive the telemarketer calls for a variety of reasons, and less likely to feel the need for help dealing with the ones they do receive.

5. I believe the answer might be yes.
From what I remember of my Hightower reading, I think the stat for number of people in the US wanting universal health care was in the upper sixtieth percentile. What is the percent wishing for the no call list?

6. They want it yes
but the health care industry has a nice track record of creating inflammatory ad campaigns whenever a plan is actually presented. Those campaigns inevitably try to make people believe that the plan will lock them out of adequate care. It's like the pharmaceutical industry claiming that the drugs in Canada are substandard when they themselves are freaking supplying said drugs to Canada!

You can't dance to a political speech.

9. Military Veterans are begging
for help even as I write here and it just isn't happening. We simply do not have the numbers to get anyone to move. Trying so hard to organize as one group to have more "power" but hasn't worked so far. I was thinking today "why can't they all move that fast for veterans?" I would think the same for health care for everyone.

10. Some candidate should start asking the question..
We should strike while the iron is hot..

The FCC ruling was "defeated" by mass support and LOUD support.. The No call was done the same way..

We need a MAJOR candidate to get behind this and HAMMER it home..

The ads could be so simple..

...couple watches a phone.. and the voice over says..

"How come the government can hear us when we want the annoying dinnertime sales pitches stopped, but that same government cannot hear us when we have been begging for decades for decent, affordable healthcare?"...

"Fat cat, drug industry, HMO, and hospital lobbyists & campaign contributors are the reason we don't have decent healthcare in the richest country on earth"..
