Reagan Library to Open Additional Records Relating to Judge John Roberts

8/11/2005 5:06:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National and Assignment Desks, Daybook Editor

Contact: National Archives Public Affairs Office, 202-501-5526

News Advisory:

WHAT: 5,383 pages from the records of the Staff Member Office Files of John G. Roberts Files, 1982 - 1986, will be opened. The remaining Roberts' documents will be opened as soon as possible.

Judge Roberts was an Associate Counsel to the President during the Reagan Administration. The Reagan Library staff has identified approximately 50,000 pages of records related to Judge Roberts. 4,864 of these pages have already been opened in response to previous FOIA requests.

WHERE: These records will be available in two formats:

-- The Research Room at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley, Calif., will open reference copies of the documents.

-- CDs of these records will be available for the media to pick up simultaneously at the Reagan Library and at the Public Affairs office at the National Archives Building, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. Only one CD per news organization.

WHEN: This group of records from the Reagan Library will be open to the public at 11 a.m. EDT/ 8 a.m. PDT on Monday, Aug. 15.

BACKGROUND: The requirements for review and release of Presidential records are established by the Presidential Records Act of 1978 and Executive Order 13233. This process is very labor-intensive and requires that National Archives staff conduct a page by page, word for word review of all records in order to protect, as required by law, sensitive information such as national security, personal privacy and law enforcement information. Following the National Archives review, by law, both the representatives of the former and the incumbent Presidents must have an opportunity to review all of the records, to determine if any of them are subject to a constitutionally-based privilege and whether such privilege will be asserted.

4. I could be waaaaayyyyy off base here,
but I am wondering if it is Nancy? She may be soo pissed at Shrub for snubbing her stem cell initiative, that this release of papers may be her way of retaliation?? just a thought?

5. I was thinking the same thing
But she would never do anything to tarnish Ronnie's image.

7. nope, she would NEVER do anything to tarnish Ronnie,
but I believe she would do everything to ruin Shrub. IMHO. And she seems to have a pretty good relationship now, with both Ron Jr. and Patty. Both kids think Shrub stole the elections, and may be influencing Nancy? But mainly, I think its the stem cell issue, and her way of flexing some muscle...

So I did some research...

http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/

As a Presidential library administered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Reagan Library, under the authority of the Presidential Records Act, is the repository of presidential records for President Reagan’s administration. Our holdings include 50 million pages of presidential documents, over 1.6 million photographs, a half million feet of motion picture film and tens of thousands of audio and video tapes. Additionally, the Library houses personal papers collections including documents from Reagan’s eight years as governor of California. Information on accessing all of these records, including how to file a Freedom of Information Act request, can be found in our Research section.

I was surprised to learn that it is associated with U Texas......

And then there is the Simi Valley Library (?)

It's probably run by a private foundation.

9. So if it is a private foundation, Nancy could have a lot of pull
Thanks for your research. That Texas connection is weird, isn't it?

And GHW was Reagan's Veep. 2+2 still equals 4. Thanks for pointing that out. I miss the obvious far too often.
