I put together a political cartoon of Cindy's fight in Crawford
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 10:18 PM by gatorboy

It's a reply to this earlier thread where Redstone requested a Tiananmen Square theme:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4319162&mesg_id=4319162

Anyway, I was hoping to get some feedback on it to see if it needs anything else. If anyone would like to use it, you're more than welcome. Thanks!

1. This is awesome. I actually thought of the Tianamen guy too, when I
read about Cindy... not as a cartoon as you have done, but the same kind of lone, heroic resistance.

Your cartoon is excellent though. Kicked and nominated.

7. nice work!
the only part that gets muddled is the space between cheney and bush...

even though its not logical, I'd lighten the space under bush's left (our left) elbow.
bush's face gets lost in the dark contrast. Or, maybe put white in his (our) left ear....maybe that's what's hitting me.

you managed to make a likeness of cindy from the back!! not a mean feat...excellent work!

40. I will email it to my Chinese friend in Beijing.
He toured me through Tiananmen Square, and recounted the event to me. He was amazed that I knew more about it than he did (he is young), and stunned that it was so important and well known to Americans. He refered to it as "the revolution".

He will LOVE this!

It'd be useless to edit the post. Just replace the image on PhotoBucket with a signed (and 'copyright'ed) image.

This is a fabulous editorial cartoon that deserves widespread publication.

67. Whoa!!!
I leave the computer for Stewart then to clean a few dishes and I come back to this!

I'm speechless. Thank you guys so much for the compliments. It really means alot! When Redstone requested a strip from BLM's idea I got right on it after work and finished it up just before The Daily Show came on (In between I had to draw a few monkeys for my son and his buddy :) ).

When I was in college I actually drew a political strip called Gatorboy, but I never got around to sending my work out for wide circulation (Laziness will do that :P).

And thanks for the art feedback from Lerkfish & juajen. I was afraid that some of the detail would get lost between Cheney and Bush but I think I can fix that up.
I have no problem with a critique, Cher. That's how we learn! :)I admit, drawing Cindy was the most difficult part of the drawing. I probably resketched her a dozen times before I was satisifed with her stance. After I put the ink down I noticed her legs looked a bit too short (Almost like a little kid), but in the end a smaller, stronger presence seemed to work better.

Yes, anyone that would like to pass it around, please do! When I get back onto Photoshop I'll add my signature if you guys like. I can also load a larger image also. The original is around 13x13 and I have it scanned in at 300 dpi so having a clearer image for a banner, etc. is no problem. I was afraid that a larger image would kill anyone's computer that still uses narrow band.

All of your generous compliments have really got me thinking about trying my hand at political cartooning again. I didn't give it much thought for years because the market is so sparse but what the Hell! Thanks for the new drive, guys! :bounce:

Do you think Cindy would mind if I sent an email of the image to her? Actually, I would love to send her the original if I could find a way to get ahold of her.

Thanks again guys! Now back to the dishes!

Chris

I love that this site has folks this talented on it. I wonder how inept a cartoon put together on the Freep site would look like.

97. I'm going to be unpopular for saying this
First, let me emphasise that I support what Cindy Sheehan is doing 100%. She's a brave and honourable woman, and when the history of this terrible administration is written, I hope this protest is seen as a turning point. But I'm uneasy about this cartoon (technically excellent though it is). The "tank guy" in Tiananmen Square (nobody seems to know for sure who he was) placed his life on the line for democracy. When I saw the news reports back in 1989, his action brought tears to my eyes. It was one of the bravest acts I'd ever seen. He knew, when he stood in front of those tanks, that he could be shot dead or run down on the spot, and that, if that didn't happen, he was likely to be executed later (some reports claim that the latter happened), or to rot away in one of China's brutal jails. Cindy Sheehan has paid a heavy price, losing her son, and she faces smears and threats for her protest. But, if we're honest, is what she faces on the same scale as that? She seems to be a modest and dignified woman, so am I out of line in suspecting that she would be uncomfortable with this comparison?

99. Cindy is doing the very same as the man in the original photo
relatively speaking. She is putting her body and soul in front of the neocons ruling the US and demanding they answer her questions. If martial law is declared in the US, this very situation could actually occur, imo, and Cindy is standing out front before that can happen.

107. She is standing up to, and causing great embarassment for, one of the...
...most ruthless international crime syndicates, nay, crime cartels, that has ever existed on this earth.
The BFEE seems to enjoy violence for violence sake. They are very powerful and VERY vindictive, and they are NOT used to being defied.
No, they DON'T run their enemies over with tanks. But their enemies have a way of turning up just as dead as if they had indeed been run over in this manner.
IMO, she is putting her entire future on the line with such open defiance, just like the young man in China.

108. You really don't get the point, do you?
The Chinese protestor was one man standing up against the forces of evil.

Mrs Sheehan is one woman standing up against the forces of evil.

She's not alone now, but she was at the beginning.

That's the point.

Please stop nitpicking.

In fact, Poppy Bush gave a mild public reprimand to China for that event and then privately sent an envoy to soothe them that he really wasn't upset but had to say something about it for the newsmedia.
