Grand Rapids, MI radio show hosts plan to drown dog on Friday
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 10:59 PM by KzooDem
Even if this is just a publicity stunt and they really don't follow through on this, it's a sick, sick stunt by Grand Rapids, MI radio station WKLQ. Fucking morans, indeed:

-In the wake of 2 child drowning deaths this week. A 9 nine year old at Holland Park and a 3 year old at Millennium Park. We feel more awareness to child safety is needed. (I have a 3 year and so does producer Wiz...Jim can't get women to stay much longer than dinner)

Pictured above is Mindy. Mindy was rescued by us from an animal shelter in the area. Mindy was scheduled to be put to sleep first thing in the morning at the shelter. On Fridays show we are going to take Mindy to an undisclosed location and see how long it takes her to drown. People tend to ignore tragic events like we have had this week, and hopefully we can bring more awareness to child safety and show just how quickly a life can drown.

You can write them a nasty email here: http://www.wklq.com/contact/contact.htm

32. Hollanders and Irishmen
My Mom's family was Irish, and my 1/2 Dutch dad was raised by his mother's English/Scottish family. My maternal grandfather was not pleased to discover his daughter was dating a "Hollander".

When the day came for her to bring my dad to meet her parents, my grandfather found he actually enjoyed my dad's company. He said, "You're OK. It must be because you weren't raised by them."

The Repuke Stepford fundies were not even liked in the 30's.

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 11:09 PM by KzooDem
Why people would report this via 911 is beyond me, but then again it is Grand Rapids. The police are aware of it, have talked to the station, but refuse to disclose the location where these asshats are supposedly going to drown this poor dog.

82. SUCCESS! Station loses advertiser
Station loses advertiser after drowning hoax
Saturday, August 13, 2005
By Nate Reens and Barton Deiters
The Grand Rapids Press
GRAND RAPIDS -- There never was a dog in danger of drowning.

But there is at least one less advertiser supporting Citadel Broadcasting radio stations in Grand Rapids after a WKLQ-FM stunt. The station's morning team threatened to tie weights to a stray dog and drown it, causing an uproar from animal activists and concerned residents.

Mike Kothe, president of Pet Supplies Plus stores in West Michigan, said Friday he is yanking all radio spots on Citadel stations, which include WLAV-FM and WBBL-AM.

Kothe also promises to push fellow businesses to drop their pitches airing on Citadel-controlled broadcast waves.

"The whole thing, in my opinion, was done to get listeners, and it's absolutely irresponsible and horrible," Kothe said. "It's backfiring, and there will be increased public pressure for this disgraceful and offensive act.

27. It's not going to happen
One of the great pieces of performance art during the Viet Nam war protesters was to put up flyers all over towns and universities to say that they were going to kill a dog w/ Napalm at a certain day. Of course, once they day arrived they had a good-sized crowd hurling obscenities and more towards the people w/ the dog.

Once the crowd had reached a fever pitch, the protester essentially said, "If you can get this upset and passionate about this dog possibly getting killed by napalm, why aren't you getting just as upset and passionate about those who are getting killed by napalm over in Cambodia and Viet Nam?"

Most of the crowd usually got what they were saying, and turned their attention to the anti-war movement.

I suspect this is the same kind of thing going on here, except they are trying to shine the spotlight on these drownings instead.

But nowadays people go to extraordinary lengths for publicity and to shock viewers and listeners. There was a time when I would have been sure they wouldn't really do it--but now, not sure at all. We should make a big noise just in case--to make sure they don't dare.

33. This about this for a second
A radio station is advertising drowning a dog to see how long it takes; they are advertising commiting a crime that would get the FCC to pull the station's licence and pretty much kill any audience they have is a massive wave of bad publicity.

It's not going to happen.

Here is what I wrote:

If you allow those sickos to drown that poor dog as a publicity stunt, you should have your license pulled and be fined a huge amount. Many thousands of us will inundate the cops, the SPCA, and the FCC with emails, phone calls, and letters. We will make certain that you pay in every way possible. With the power of the Internet, we can spread the word far and wide--and faster than you can imagine. If you have any sense at all, you will fire those idiots immediately!

37. Disgusting
I'm particularly a dog guy so seeing the picture of the poor little dog they intend to murder broke my heart and brought a tear to my eye.

How can intentionally drowning an innocent, defenseless animal possibly benefit anything? The only thing it will do will bring a painful meaningless death for the poor dog. I hope this is some kind of sick joke. What they should do is give the dog to someone who will care for her and give her a happy life.

Now that my feelings of sadness are begining to pass, my feelings of anger are starting to come out. What in the fuck is wrong with people. Everywhere in the world there is pointless meaningless death! The slow painful demise of the dog, the mass murder perpetrated by the chimp brought about by this bullshit "war".

That being said I'm not trying to compare the massive loss of human life with the possible killing of this one dog. I guess what I'm trying to point out is the thought processes that people like this all seem to have. As long as its not them they dont give a damn who suffers or how much.

Sorry, but again I'm a dog guy and this really struck something in me.

I too am a dog person and this is just beyond comprehension. If this is just a "publicity stunt", how can they possibly think it would paint the station in a positive light. The station needs to be shut down and whoever came up with the idea and/or went along with it needs to suffer the same fate that they want the poor dog to suffer. Hell, I'll take the dog. Just don't drown her. Harming a dog is just beyond anything I can imagine.

42. I have contacted both the Michigan Attorney General's office and
the radio station producer. I have demanded that the MI attorney general close down this station immediately, and stop the torture of this animal.

here is the text of my e-mail to the AG:

Dear Sir:

I am contacting you in the hopes that you will be able to act swiftly today (Friday) to STOP what a Michigan Radio station is going to do as a publicity stunt. I am referring to Grand Rapids radio station 107.3 KLQ-Pure Rock. Their hosts, Justice and Jim, are on in the mornings, and are going to take a dog named Mindy, that they rescued from the SPCA to an undisclosed location, to see how long it takes her to drown. This is an abomination!

(I put in link to radio's website, including exactly what was said about what would happen to Mindy)

These people need to be put off the air and their station shut down immediately. I don't know what means are available to you, but please do all you can to stop these people from carrying out this abhorrent act. Please act quickly; this poor dog didn't need to be rescued, only to be tortured at the hands of idiots. I don't know who else to contact in Michigan to help with this situation. I live in Texas, and contacting you and your office seemed the best approach.

Sincerely,

here is what I wrote to the radio station producer:

This note is to inform you that I have contacted the Michigan Attorney General's office and let them know of your dispicable stunt. I have demanded that you, your hosts, and your station be taken off the air immediately. What kind of mindset creates such atrocities? What could you possibly be thinking to allow the torture of a poor, defenseless animal? I am speechless. I can only hope that you are shut down and put out of business immediately.

It was apparently an effort to get people to adopt animals from shelters - just like a former poster mentioned about anti-war efforts during the Vietnam war. And also to bring atention to water safety and children.

63. Ah! So they're just assholes!
IF I had listened to them before, that would turn me off, no matter what the good intentions.

64. Lighten up Lucies . . .
The only thing WKLQ is guilty of is a really sick sense of humor. It is not illegal to merely say you are going to drown a dog. Who knows if they even have a dog or just a picture of a dog. I'm from Grand Rapids and not the biggest fan of the far right religious dutch nuts but that has nothing to do with this WKLQ stunt. Besides that how many of those far right religious dutch nuts are really listening to WKLQ - an alternative rock station? I think some of you people could get worked up over just about anything. With all the things going on in the world this is not something to give even a minute of attention.

65. Yeah you're right we should all be having a nice little belly laugh
about people advocating the sadistic torture and abuse of helpless and defenseless creatures. That's a hoot.

There aren't enough assholes in the world beating their dogs/kids/wives.
There is too much compassion in this society, that's why we are in an unprovoked war for oil
We need to encourage a new crop of serial killers so we can have something entertaining to watch on the tee-vee news.

67. I didn't say it was funny . . .
I'm just saying the joke was nonsense and the reaction here is nonsense. Get upset about people beating their dogs/kids/wives. Get upset about an unprovoked war for oil. Get upset about real things. Not a stupid publicity stunt by a very minor radio station. No dog was injured (or ever really in danger because I highly doubt the radio station has a dog to drown)and I'm sure the police were involved even before the first person called 911. Your outrage is misplaced. If you don't like WKLQ's programming or promotion of violence against animals, turn your radio station.

76. And what would you say to your kid
when they come running to you crying that some men are going to drown a dog? It's a joke?

I think this will backfire on them big time.

A quick flash of a nipple is not okay, but saying you're going to drown an animal is fine. Yeah, I can see the logic.

69. you might be thinking of someone else
My name doesn't not start with a T and I am not a little man (not a man at all). I don't promote the torture of any animal. There are people doing truly grievous things and this is not one of them.

68. This HAS to be a joke
It's a bad joke, but still, I can't believe this is serious. People aren't that sick, are they?

Are they?????????

71. This is a joke
a very, very bad sick joke. Some people are that sick but a minor radio station in GR looking for publicity is not one of them.

73. What? Surely this isn't serious.
And would it not be considered illegal? Is this really a way to bring more attention to child drownings? I really hope this is just a publicity stunt.

78. TURN THEM INTO LAW ENFORCEMENT
What they are doing is against the law --- cruelty to animals. They could possibly lose their radio license also.
