5. I only drink wine or beer nowadays.
Back when I was really hitting the bottle, I used to blackout at least once a week...

7. Downer's Grove is STILL dark!
Power went out Wednesday from a substaion fire.

That's the second fire Con-Ed in Chicago has had this year.

Locally, we've had 2 outages this year, both of about 3 hour's duration. "Official Explaination" was stone silence. Rumour had it that the utility we buy power from practices crappy P-M and the single sub that feeds us hasn't had maintenance in years.

I have lots of oil lamps for light. Don't know what to do for refridgeration or heat, though.

Could be an interesting winter if we get ice storms.

9. Always
We probably have a dozen significant outages a year. Just a couple of weeks ago some people were without power for 3 or 4 days in 95 degree heat. Most of the outages are weather related.

12. Thought you were talking about yourself. Relieved it's just the area
Was going to tell you to unplug now and then and take walks! But you do probably unplug anyway when there are blackouts, don't you? :)

14. We're "awash in power" according to my local paper
LOL!

LIPA: More available power has kept summer cool
Thanks to the cross Sound cable and additional generators, LI is awash in electricity this summer

August 7, 2005

This month four years ago during a blistering heat wave, Long Island came within a razor's margin of consuming its entire power supply -- only 85 megawatts out of the approximately 4,600 it had available to it was not being used.

With only 2 percent of the available power not in use on that Aug. 8, the region was teetering on the edge of a power failure. Had a single power station faltered under the strain, blackouts would have swept the Island.

...

Even as Long Islanders shattered all previous power-use records for the second time this month, LIPA officials said that major changes in the power supply system instituted since the fateful summer of 2001 bore up without once risking a shortage.

The officials said that 1,100 megawatts of capacity added in the last four years -- with an additional 1,000 megawatts slated to come on-line by 2008 -- should keep Long Island well supplied. For now, officials said, Long Island has solved its power problems.

"We've come back from the precipice," Kessel said. "And we've come back strong."

15. looks like i had a blackout on my first drink 1969, blacked out till 2000
that isn't too far from the truth.. all i did for 30 years is seek and consume alcohol

i broke through denial listening to a Tibetan on the saturday morning program on NPR.

I got some tapes on Meditation and started practicing, i then ran into a Tibetan Monk in El Paso and he helped me along the Middle path till i could hobble along by myself. I still have some anger issues about early childhood stuff. PTSD from Extremest fundamentalist Christian torture and abuse as a small child and being abused by my father, beaten and belittled all the time.

But i feel now after 5 years sober that i am really lucky.. and i am very grateful to all those who have helped me and have been concerned.

17. Get yourself a commercial grade UPS
All my important devices run from it. I use a Minuteman Suresine and it has operated flawlessly for years. I can run a desktop and monitor for >10 hours.
