I read this at Kevin Drum's Political Animal site and thought it was worth reading. A post by Global Citizen:
Answer Her Questions, Mr. Bush
It is the absolute least you can do after her son died for your lie. She is outside your ranch, and you know she is there, you have sent your minions out already.
Be a man and get your ass out there and talk to this woman, right now.
If you don't, she will wait you out. You don't get to win this one. Her son died for you. A lot of mothers lost sons for you.
My son almost enlisted in the Marine Reserves in 2001. I wasn't able to talk him out of it, and I was frantic. I have never in my life known such terror as I felt when he told me his plans to enlist in the Marines on your watch. My instincts told me you were bad news for the entire country, and for the military in particular. Thankfully, his father was able to reach him with his experiences as a man who wore the uniform, and keep him a civilian. I thank him, out loud, every day. Let me tell you now what his father said that kept our son out of the Marines:
He told him that he did not trust you, Mr. Bush. He told him that you would prove to be a lying, deceitful, sanctimonious fake-Christian who would get thousands of young men killed while he was in office. He told him, as a veteran (who never fired a shot), not to serve a Commander-in-Chief who doesn't have the good sense to avoid an ill-advised pissing contest, who will go looking for trouble, because his Daddy got to have a war on his watch, and Junior's an inadequate failure and a punk. This meant something coming from his father, who served honorably, and not only upheld the Honor Code while he won the Cold War, he was one of the officers who repaired it after the exodus of seasoned officers in 1974. My son understands that you have destroyed our national credibility, as well as the Honor Code. The Honor Code is the only thing that stands between a military and tyranny on the populace.
I am not happy about my husbands prediction coming true. Cassandra was never my nickname, and I am not a liberal who delights in the mess you have made. I am an American who is heartbroken by it! But my husband served under every C-in-C since Carter, and as a missile man, he had to call the President personally at least once during every administration from Carter through Clinton; when enough birds couldn't sortie: "I've talked to them Son. I've spoken with them. Carter was the nicest man I ever spoke to, and Clinton had genuine concern. I know something about Presidents. And I don't trust this son-of-a-bitch. Please don't join up, at least not while that punk-ass little prick is President. If something happens before he manages to start a war in the middle east that will drag on forever and kill thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis, then we'll talk about this again. But don't serve under this guy, he isn't worth it, and he won't do anything worthwhile. He will get you killed."
