Holy smoke it's rising fast! I drove by this morning and regular self-serve at my economy station was $2.44 - I thought that sucks because it was $2.40 last night. I go to get gas on my way home (half day) and it was $2.48 - guy was changing prices as I was filling! I told him "you should just stay out here all day and change the numbers continuously". He said "it's fucking ridiculous isn't it"!! I chuckled.

maybe it will come down a bit by late next week or at least quit going up. They said on the radio this morning that it was going up 5 cents today. Then they had a clip of an interview of a lady saying, "People haven't changed their driving habits in the last week. As long as people are willing to pay the new higher prices, that is what they are going to charge" It's so true. They have us over a barrel. We can do some things to cut down driving but you've still got to get where you have to go.

The problem with this is we import 60% (or more) of our oil. Taxing domestic producers on a fungible commodity will just force them to reduce production or sell overseas. At least he is trying to do something, though.

but, why is it that, if there are gas stations/oil companies which sell only domestic oil--that the price of a barrel of foreign crude affects those companies prices at the pump?--I mean, other than "because they can" explanation.

I mean, if these domestic companies were making a pile of money, and they were, when gas was selling for $1.25 or even under a dollar, (When Clinton was in office--bought it, at times, for 69 cents.)--while in the hell do they have to raise their prices now. If no foreign oil, then how can price of foreign oil impact their cost of producing gasoline?

It seems to me, the PATRIOTIC thing to do, for these companies would be to continue to sell it for the low price--it seems that such a move would make an impact on OPEC.

Again, I may be ignorant or just naive--that's why I'm asking.

we pay 1.399 euro for a liter. 3.8 litres to a gallon that makes 5.3162 euro a gallon. 1 euro is about 1.24 dollar so that makes 6.592 dollar a gallon.

Do you spend $448 a month for gasoline? If we had to pay $6.59 a gallon, that's what it would cost me.

At $6.59 a gallon, something would have to go in order to be able to afford to go to work. Telephone? Maybe leave the air conditioner shut off, and forget running fans, those cost money to run, too. Same for heat this winter.
Food? Medicine? Yeah, sure....

Maybe you're thinking "Why don't you just LIVE in your precious car and save the cost of rent, Yank?"

And by far most of the cost of petrol in Holland is taxes, which is used for the common good.
People adjust their spending patterns to reoccurring costs such as that of 'filling up the tank'. Many Americans can barely make ends meet, much more so then in Holland (thanks to taxes spend on the common good), so a doubling of the cost of petrol has a severe impact on the budget of many people.

I hope that explains why Americans are complaining.
