Mothers War Protest veers onto Wrong Path
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 12:29 PM by raysr
President Bush could end the shenanigans of the military mom turned antiwar poster child who is camped outside his Texas vacation ranch.

All he has to do is meet with the grieving woman.

If the president spoke with Cindy Sheehan for a few minutes behind ranch doors, he could field her questions about why her soldier son made the ultimate sacrifice.

He could show the world he does have a heart, contrary to public perception. A brief tête-à-tête also would douse the blaze of media that threatens to make the cowpoke town the site of a whoopee-ti-yi-yo showdown.

Mom versus the Prez.

Trouble is Sheehan is not sincerely interested in meeting Bush for a private, heartfelt chat about her understandable anguish and lingering questions"

1. Nice spin, huh? Raising her voice in protest, telling her story as a means
... of illustrating this crucial issue -- he spins that into nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Here's a picture of the columnist, from the newspaper's website:

I'm guessing he was not a history major in college. :eyes:

Mother's war protest veers onto wrong path

By ROBERT L. JAMIESON Jr.
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER COLUMNIST

Some of these families believe the war is wrong, too.

They just choose to deal with their feelings in a way that doesn't cheapen the memory of their loved ones or turn a grave matter into a media circus standoff that generates more heat than light.

25. "all he has to do is meet with the grieving woman"...
.. he doesn't have the balls for that- and if he can't handle a grieving mothers anger, he should get the HELL out of the KITCHEN-

It IS 'hard work' to be accountable- but bush knows NOTHING about work, hard or otherwise-

"shenanigans"- here is a song from Green Day for bush's shenanigans-

Desensitized

Clenching my teeth tight
My head is like a sponge
Give it to me free

I wanna get ripped off
And drown in the airwaves
Another fatal wreck
On the information highway

So go ahead and kill yourselves
It all amuses me
For I'll be damned to spend my life in hell
Another wise ingrate

Bring me blood and pain
Of a stranger's fate
Give it all away

Give it to me now
I'm desensitized
I wanna watch the bomb
Blow the masses high

I wanna get ripped off
And drown in the airwaves
Another fatal wreck
On the information highway
So go ahead and kill yourselves
It all amuses me
For I'll be damned to spend my life in hell
Another wise ingrate

Bring me blood and pain
Of a stranger's fate
Give it all away

I wanna get ripped off
And drown in the airwaves
Another fatal wreck
On the information highway
So go ahead and kill yourselves
It all amuses me
For I'll be damned to spend my life in hell
Another wise ingrate

I told him that I hoped he'd never be able to sleep again knowing that he was throwing rocks at those who speak truth to power. I told him that I hope his dreams are filled with the horror and anguish that Mrs. Sheehan will be dealing with for the rest of her life.

I encourage all to do the same:

......She also will come across accounts of our "heartless" president crying with families of dead soldiers.

Sheehan's Texas tantrum wittingly or unwittingly abets left-leaning forces that are happy to use her to get at the president. If the anemic antiwar movement needs a mourning mom to lead the charge against this unjust war, then the movement is in dire straits.

Protest marches and demonstrations, which powered public sentiment against the war in Vietnam, have been reduced to this -- a mom with a mic.

Pathetic.

9. I just sent this letter to Cindy's home paper, which is also giving her
a terrible time. Feel free to use your own variation if you like.

I was heartbroken for Cindy when I came across two
pieces in your paper about her that show no compassion
for her situation in any way. (Nancy Smith 8/13 and
Catherine Moy 8/12)

So to balance that I am writing from all the way over
here in Maine to tell you all that I love Cindy
Sheehan. I heard her speak at a Fair here in my area
and when she read the poem her daughter wrote in
memory of Casey I couldn't hold back my tears.

The local women who wrote about Cindy had a lot to say
about her, none of it good. But have they met her?
Spent time with her? Do they know the good she has
done in the world as a youth minister or how the son
she lost followed in her footsteps to also do good in
the world?

How can they uphold her noble son and yet excoriate
one of the people most responsible for molding him
into who he was? They should thank her for raising up
such a wonderful young man. Then they should grieve at
his passing with her. Even if they do not agree with
her questions about his death (and what loving mother
would not ask "Why?!") is it really necessary to trash
and degrade her in this way?

45. Good response, G.O.
I read Jamieson's columns regularly as a fellow Seattleite. I was shocked at his column today. It seemed totally out of character, in my estimation, but then I realized that I just don't know the guy.

I remember when he wrote about the wrongness of treating a child as an adult in a criminal trial. I thought he was very compassionate.

I suspect he is going to elaborate on his animosity, even vitriol, toward Cynthia, in another column. I look forward to the explanation, because, as a general fan of his, I don't get that column at all. He sounded downright mean-spirited and nasty.

Not the Jamieson I am used to reading.

Robert - your readers are waiting.

15. here's my letter
Mr. Jamieson Jr,

You are right that President Bush could end Cindy Sheehan's camping in Crawford Texas. What you are very wrong about is that Sheehan is not sincerely interested in meeting with Bush. She met with Bush a couple months after her son died in Iraq. At that time any expression of sympathy was very welcome to her. She has never denied that. Since that time, however, new evidence has come out that Bush sent her son into war for false reasons. Perhaps doing some research on the Downing Street Memo would give you some insight into this information.

Simply put, Sheehan learned that Bush lied, Casey died. She would like to know why.

By writing what you did, you join the group that seeks to smear her rather than address this issue. The president is supposed to answer to the people and she is the people. It is very patriotic to question an administrations actions and you should be ashamed of your spin on this important issue.

How condensending!

.....If Sheehan wants sober war policy answers, I have a one-word suggestion for her: Google.

She can read up on Bush's shifting justifications for the Iraq debacle. She won't get solid answers, but she will read a lot about a Bush administration that misrepresents facts and lies as a matter of habit.

She also will come across accounts of our "heartless" president crying with families of dead soldiers.

face attached to the war. This is actually what Cindy has done. Humanized the war.
War is Greed, anger .. and hate, so long as you can keep distancing human emotion from entering into the sterile environment, you can keep pounding your drums.
When a face of compassion, grief and loss humanize the war, you begin to loose.

Bless you Cindy and everyone else in Crawford for lending your face and courage for humanity.

29. I think THIS guy is the one "trying to make a name" for himself.
Specifically, by being the columnist who is ostensibly against the Iraq war, yet also willing to call Cindy Sheehan to the carpet.

What an ultra-maroon, as Bugs Bunny would say.

He doesn't grasp, among other things, that we've tried big protest marches; the media ignores them, or they will bend over backwards to give "equal time" to 50 pro-war protesters at a march that brings out several hundred thousand against the war. In the face of the corporate media filter, ANY protest that gets the cable bobbleheads to stop talking about aruba and runaway brides for five minutes is a resounding fucking success. Plus, who the hell is this guy to question Sheehan's sincerity, or challenge her take on how best to serve her son's memory?

Lastly, the argument about how she's "Changed her tune" since her previous meeting with Bush is pure Drudge-style crap. Desperate flailings of people who understand they can't use the normal GOP smear tactics on a mother who has lost her child to a bogus war.

37. I think this guy has a problem with strong white women
Look at the crap he was spewing when Gregoire became govenor.

January 14, 2005

'Personal legacies' and our new governor

Hearing all of this, my brain flashed back, first to Gregoire's sorority days at the University of Washington.

As president of Kappa Delta sorority more than three decades ago, she tolerated a "whites-only, Christians-only" rule. She presided over rituals with hooded white robes that even reminded some of her own sorority sisters of the Ku Klux Klan and the sorority's racist roots.

The exclusionary policies hurt young students of color and Jewish students who wanted to feel included in the university milieu. In particular, the policies had a profound impact on Paula Moore, a smart, pretty African American woman from Seattle, who approached the sorority only to be rebuffed. "I'm not bitter about this," UW archives quote Moore as saying. "I only hope that my case will give others a better chance in the future."

Just for the record, I don't agree with what you said in your column about Ms. Sheehan. If we call it grandstanding every time someone stands up to something wrong, nothing will ever change.

Also, Ms. Sheehan has a right to change her mind after more information about the war came to light. I think many people in this country are rethinking our involvement in this war, especially as the death toll climbs.

As a parent myself, I totally understand her commitment. Her courage should be applauded. We should all be screaming in the streets, following Bush wherever he goes and demanding he speak to us. A doctor from my hometown in California has gone to Crawford to join the effort. I honor him and every other citizen out there.

35. Here's my LTTE to the Seattle Post Intelligencer and Mr. Jamieson Jr.
Cindy Sheehan’s protest is on the same moral high ground as the Chilean mothers who protested General Pinochet's brutal policies. She has framed her protest with the most effective question – “What was the noble cause that my son died for?” That question is a moral stake through the heart of the corrupt Bush Administration. Bush can't answer that question because his Iraq war was based upon deceit and delusions. Neither can the deceitful Media jackals, like those on FOX, CNN, and the New York Times, who cheer leaded this nation into committing a war crime, answer Mrs. Sheehan.

Mrs. Sheehan’s protest is showing how hypocritical Bush and the Right wing Chicken hawks in the Neo-con movement and in the Media are. It’s also showing how immoral the pro-war Democrats, like Sen. "Holy Joe" Lieberman, Sen. "MBNA" Joe Biden, and Sen. "Iron Lady" Hillary Clinton are.

Contrary to Mr. Jamieson Jr’s opinion, Cindy Sheehan is the "Rosa Parks" of the anti-Iraq war movement. The Sheehan protest is sparking around this nation local media coverage of other military moms and wives, who are speaking out against the war, and that is more evidence of the national resonance of Mrs. Sheehan’s protest.

Below are a few examples of this local coverage.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/0805/12iraqmom.html reports on Mary Ann MacCombie, a Missouri mom who lost her son in 2004 and is stepping up her anti-war activism.

KCEN-TV http://www.kcentv.com/news/c-article.php?cid=1&nid=7719 , the Central Texas NBC affiliate, talked to Killeen, TX resident Cathleen Fox and her son Christopher. Both came to Crawford to back Sheehan, even though Christopher is shipping back out to Iraq in a few months.

The Springfield, Missouri News-Leader http://www.news-leader.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050811/NEWS01/508110362/1095 covered Valerie Fletcher, whose son is in Iraq, and who is on her way to Crawford.

WISH-TV http://www.wishtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=3712723&nav=0Ra7dF2x , the CBS affiliate in Indianapolis, interviewed Jari Sheese, a military wife who supports Sheehan’s protest.

Note to editors: I’m the secretary of the Killingly, CT Democratic Town Committee.

I don't know if they will publish my ltte. I'm not a resident of the Seattle area, but I made sure I sent it to the editors and Mr. Jamieson Jr.

43. he's an idiot. I sent him this:
I read your column carefully and it struck me how very sad it is that even those who have the absolute moral authority by virtue of their sacrifice are being forced by such as you to toe a line that we ALL KNOW was a lie. How is it that you grind the grieving mother who is seeking the truth and ignore the LIE that made her sacrifice so terribly inevitable? What is there about the heart that you cannot see that she has EVERY RIGHT to be accusatory, to be demanding, to seek the TRUTH THAT SHE NEEDS TO LIVE WITH THIS IN HER OWN WAY?

I am very sad when I read columns like yours. Its interesting how many people who have made ZERO sacrifice over this war, who have lost ZERO loved ones to a documented lie should be so condemning of people for whom this war marked the end of their happiness. How very sad that you are so hollow to focus on form and not substance. She can protest this man naked, throw bananas at him as he whisks past to his latest fundraiser from his FIVE WEEK vacation and still have every GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO DO SO.

Try and think about what you have written. In your defense of Bush, and this is what it is, you have placed worship of the man over the welfare of this country and her people. I feel sorry for you, sir.
