Anne Wright And The Man In The Truck - story from Crawford
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 12:56 PM by funkybutt
Not sure if any of you have seen this yet but it really touched me. I wanted to pass it along. By Sapphire Harvey

http://www.upbeatdefiance.com/xoops/modules/news/article.php?storyid=59

This article is the first in an ongoing series of glimpses into the lives of people visiting and staying at Camp Casey. Please feel free to share these on your own websites, along with a trackback or link to us.

"Annie Spell called in this morning to share some brief glimpses into the lives and personalities of the people who have joined them at Camp Casey. I've debated what order to share these stories in, wanting to ensure that each and every story was read, because they are all so powerful, so moving. How was I to choose?

I've decided to trust in the process, to trust that each story will be heard. One story, however, clearly had to be first. And interestingly enough, this story involves a man who is not particularly supportive of Cindy's efforts. Yet it is his story, above all others, that has moved most of us to near tears.

So let me first introduce you to "Anne Wright And The Man In The Truck."

Anne Wright is another one of the, what Annie Spell calls, "head honchos of the camp." Anne is lovingly referred to as the "Camp Commandantè." As a 20 year military vet, she is a member of Veterans for Peace. Annie says of Anne, "She has a wonderful smile. When you see her, you instantly think of her as a good friend."

Yesterday, Camp Casey was on high-alert. They were aware that the counter protesters were expected to arrive yesterday afternoon, so everyone was being hyper vigilant. Of key importance to everyone involved with the organization of Camp Casey was the idea that our vigil sitters remain calm and peaceful.

As everyone was going about their business, waiting for the counter protesters to arrive, a man drove up in a huge diesel pickup truck. You know the kind, with the big doolie wheels and such. He parked right in the center of the triangle – right in the space no one from Camp is supposed to be. He parked in such a way that the front end of his truck was facing directly towards the tents where Cindy and the other military families sleep – and where all the crosses of fallen soldiers have been erected.

The man sat in his truck for quite some time while our people looked on and waited to see what he intended. After a while, one of the vets from Camp Casey walked up to the man’s truck and informed him that no one was allowed to park in the triangle. The gentleman identified himself as the father of a fallen soldier. Anne Wright walked up to this man’s truck and began speaking with him through his rolled down window. He told her that he did not support what Cindy and the others are doing at Camp Casey, but he wanted to come and see if his son’s name was on one of the crosses. Anne invited him to come walk the crosses with her. The man got out of his truck and went with Anne to move up and down the rows of crosses, looking together for his son’s name. When they found it, they sat down in front of it, wrapped their arms around each other and cried together.

The entire Camp was affected by this event. I suspect that there were few dry eyes in our little corner of Crawford yesterday afternoon. I know that even as Annie related this story to me, I was choking up and having a very difficult time typing as she spoke, her voice cracking as she related the tale. Much has been said on both sides of this issue about what is “right” and what is “good” and what is “honorable.” If you ask me, the interaction between Anne and “The Man In The Truck” is the perfect representation of what we are trying to accomplish – Peaceful coexistence among people of different beliefs, politics and ideologies. I don’t know who “the man in the truck” is, but should he ever read this, I want him to know how much his story touched me. I want him to know that I honor him, and I honor his child, and I honor the sacrifice his family has made in pursuit of their ideals. To you, Sir, I bow my head in respect."

20. I just gave it a toss.
I sent it to my e-mail circle, to the local democrats, to a local democratic activist group, and to a local anti-war group.

The peace group has a support Cindy demonstration planned for Monday. They routinely provide updates about camp crawford in their mailings.

I also sent it to a local weekly newspaper called the "Northern Express" http://www.northernexpress.com/ They are a well read liberal minded paper. I stated that it was a copy-writed story, and provided a link to this thread which includes the link to its source. I pasted your entire message below my brief comment as the body of the text. I hope you hear from them, and I read it in the paper.

Thanks for posting this! I have only begun to circulate this one.

15. They say that your mind only allows
your body to feel that which it can handle at the time. I wonder if it would be easier to stay calm and control our anger at those who we don't understand if we remember that. Maybe they are angry at Cindy because she is causing such termoil in their minds. They know the killing is wrong, but they can't deal with believing that all these people have died for a lie. I think the man in the truck was dealing with that, and so he sat there and thought.

If Bush were a man, he would walk down to Cindy with a picnic basket. Give her some cold water and some food and sit down with her and listen. Instead he is allowing a situation to brew and escalate until someone gets hurt. It doesn't matter how many socks he sticks in his underpants, he is not a big man.

23. Chills and goosebumps
Beautiful story.

I don't understand how anyone, whether they agree with the war or not, cannot have compassion for a mother who has lost her son. I've pondered this, and thought about how I would feel if the situation was reversed and a woman from a different idealogical background and point of view than I were doing something similar and I honestly think all I would feel would be pity and compassion. I might not agree with her beliefs but I would be moved by her grief. How can you not be? How can you not understand her need for answers?

I cannot imagine seeing MY son's name on one of those crosses. My son is 17 years old - I worry all the time about his future in this world where we've embarked upon endless war.

25. Wow - amazing story! It really seemed to matter to him that his son...
had a cross in his name. That's the irony to me. To the B* administration, nobody's an individual; all of the casualties are just viewed as the unfortunate consequences of the war.

Whether he admits it or not, the cross being there for his son touched his heart because it honored his son and probably started the change in his mind towards how he sees things in reference to what Cindy's doing.

30. The very humanity shown in this episode is exactly why
I believe we can stop this killing machine. Despite our differences and conflicts, we all have hearts and souls (except for those like Cheney, Bush et al who have sold theirs to the devil) and we are talking about human life, and decency and dignity and what is just and right.

One by one, everyone in this nation is realizing that this war is wrong.

31. You know, you just have some days
where you start out on the wrong side of the bed and are irritable to everyone and annoyed at most everything; today started off that way for me today -- but when I read this, I started bawling my head off.

The visual I get of that bereaved and angry father and the peacemaking "Camp Commandante" clinging to one another in a shared moment of grief on the ground in front of all those crosses for the fallen -- is simply a powerful display of humanity and tolerance.

33. The distinction is noted here
No one there was bashing this father for his beliefs. Instead, he was invited to grieve next to "us."

I can not imagine ever trashing a parent of a fallen soldier, even if that person is a die-hard Repuke, just because that parent wants answers, wants the truth.

Evidently, many Repukes do not feel the same measure of respect for grieving parents. This story illustrates the differences between us.

43. So where are the B*shbots "HONORING" our nation's dead children?
This guy lost his child;
he's dealing with the GREATEST PAIN any human can ever encounter...

And the only PUBLIC MEMORIAL for his child,
the ONLY place his son's name is honored...

...is in a roadside DITCH in rural Texas.

That's a metaphor for this whole quagmired clusterfuck, right there.

Anyone know where I can find it? I'd like to email this story to him. Just a Google search didn't turn it up.

Buchanan was last seen on television trashing Cindy. I'd like him to see this.

Also forwarding this link to Time and Newsweek. They should do a cover on these stories coming out of Camp Casey.

It seems that the pro-Bush people who have lost family are finding some common ground with the anti-war folks.

For many it must be very painful to admit to themselves that their loved one died for a lie. :-(

58. Wow, I'm in tears...
That's so powerful... 'he wanted to come and see if his son’s name was on one of the crosses'. Cindy is honoring his son's memory in a way that this administration has not.

I've read and seen many anti-war protests that honor the soldiers who have fallen, even ABC ran the faces and names of our soldiers who have died.

Has this administration EVER actively displayed respect for our fallen soldiers? I'm not talking with words; Bush is constantly using their deaths to justify his war. I mean, real actions that show how deeply America cares for these people who have died for us, and their families? Bush hasn't even gone to a funeral yet, and over 1800 soldiers have died...

68.  I heard the story but it's nice to have a link
Anne Wright is another wonderful woman doing the right thing. She resigned her position in this administration due to their foreign policy. And now she's doing the right thing again helping Cindy and all the Gold Star families. She's still working for us in her way.

Mary Anne Wright resigned her post as deputy chief of mission in Mongolia on March 19, 2003, "the day before the United States launched air strikes on Baghdad" because "Wright decided she could no longer represent a government whose foreign policy she found indefensible." Wright sent Secretary of State Colin L. Powell a three-page typed letter in which she wrote: "All my life I've been a public servant, and with every administration there are things that you personally may have to hold your nose and go, 'Oh, God,' says Wright, a retired Army colonel who joined the foreign service in 1987."
