Hi, Harriet,
I don't know if you're familiar with BushCo's
New Freedom Commission and its offshoot,
TeenScreen. Essentially, Bush plans to test
every American for mental illness, beginning with school children -- and
without parental consent! The plan also includes
mandatory therapies, i.e. specific psychoactive drugs from American pharmaceutical companies (otherwise known as Bush supporters). Here's what
Columbia University thinks of the program:
TeenScreen: Front Group for the Psycho-Pharmaceutical Industrial Complexhttp://www.psychsearch.net/teenscreen.html The program has already been instituted in several states (e.g. Illinois) --
without parental notification of the testing -- and they plan to take it nationwide. Lawsuits have already begun:
TeenScreen: The lawsuits begin http://www.onlinejournal.com/Special_Reports/061405Pringle/061405pringle.html What's most disturbing about this whole scheme is that the administration is trying to keep it secret while they go about instituting it. It's disgraceful and scary as hell, and if local communities don't stand up to BushCo, it will be in all our schools before we know it.
I encourage you to read the above articles, as well as the ones I'll cite below. I think this is something that the legislature should address before it actually starts happening here. If federal law won't require parental consent for the testing, then local law should.
You might also want to pass this information along to the Democratic candidate for County Executive; it would be a powerful campaign issue to use against her opponent.
Best,
Michael M.
