Need rebuttals: "Liberals are naiive about how the world operates"
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 09:02 PM by steve2470
I haven't heard that one in a while but I know it's out there. They're usually talking about foreign affairs matters when that's stated.

Addendum: I think this shit applies when they are arguing for an overly muscular military, a CIA that kills foreign leaders, and a "dog eat dog" view of world affairs.

1. Torture hasn't been official policy for hundreds of years. Thanks.
Neither has ignoring intelligence reports saying "Bin Laden determined to strike in US" and Atta connected to Al Queda.

If 9/11 is your version of running the country, please go away now.

11. As the old saying goes...
arguing with a freeptard is "fighting a battle of wits with an unarmed person." There's no fun in that.

15. Are you speaking of the overall subject as being moot, or thinking
that I'm from FR?

Should have used :sarcasm: in my post.

the OP was about rebuttals to some freeptard making a freeptard argument...it was a further compliment. :yourock:

Edit to add: I just think it's a waste of time arguing with people who make statements like "Liberals don't understand how the world operates...or some other such nonsense."

5. Who cares if they say this?
It's one of those deliberately fuzzy statements that you'll be arguing about for hours. You'll notice that a lot of their arguments aren't to convince you so much as to stall you.

Several years living abroad, a masters in International Development, and several languages later I love being told I'm wrong by some douche that has never left US borders.

Ignorance...blatant ignorance. When I take advice on the state of international relations from some dipstick who has never even lived lived in an Islamic society let alone read the Koran. Especially those who do not merit the changing of the nature of FR in the post-cold war era and using 9/11 as an excuse to revert to some twisted corporate form of imperialism.

9. They're absolutely right.
What they're trying to tell you is the underhanded wink, wink, nudge, nudge agreements between individuals is common. That lying to the public is for their own good, etc.

When I finally got through to an old time Republican and convinced him that Bush was headed for a downfall, his response was, "Okay, we did some horrible things, but our horrible things aren't as bad as their horrible things." He was promoting the annihiliation of the muslims in Africa.

Now that the Repub's backs are to the wall, the truth of their prejudices come out. And that's what pisses me off the most about the Democrats. That they allowed Republicans to frame the issues for so many years, that they never got passed the smoke and mirrors. It took the blogosphere to get to the truth.

17. I don't know how I could disagree with you, so vehemently,
on the libertarian thread, and agree with you, so whole-heartedly, on this one, but I do. :hi:

The only thing that I see, though, is that the prejudices are not really "out," per se, and that the Dems are still doing a piss-poor job of cutting through the "smoke and mirrors." Partially, because they belong to the same team, and partially because they have no balls. Only a few, like Boxer and Conyers, repeatedly stand up -- the people with national recognition are as beholden to their corporate donors as your worst Republican.

36. You know how I know that the Democrats are clueless?
Because they wasted too much time, playing by the rules. If they knew the Republicans were cheating, they would have realized that playing by the rules would have only guaranteed that they would come up losing - every time. The fact that Gore stopped the recounts because it was "the right thing to do for the best of the nation," and that Kerry didn't launch his extraordinary band of volunteer lawyers into Ohio loudly and with conviction, it means that the Democrats were still playing by the old rules of engagement, and the Republicans counted on them to do it. You understand what I'm saying? Rove knew exactly what was going to happen each time he launched a political tactic because the Democrats always respond in a predictable manner. It's as if they thought that in this country, playing fair is still a quality of good character. Americans talk about good character, but what they really want is a winner.

Now, the only argument that I would accept to counter that is that the Democrats KNOW that the Republicans are corrupt and criminal, and thus, are afraid to go too far. If you want to bring up the anthrax powder and Wellstone, well, then I just might wonder why anybody would bother to play such a futile role. I'd probably just get up and walk out in protest to accentuate the problem.

13. Actually Just The Opposite Is True
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 09:09 PM by ThomWV
You might try this for a rebuttal:

It is the more realistic view of the world that an understanding of, and tolerance for differences, the guiding principal of us Democrats, that by any reasonable standard would be called the more mature, not the naive view.

It is the limited view of the fringe right wing that is naive. Indeed it presupposes that many obstacles are insurmountable and as a consequence change toward a more liberally oriented society is impossible. I could not imagine a more naive view that that.

How's that work for you?

Edited for a bit of clairity.

16. liberals are not naive about how the world "operates"
they are also not content with status quo. just because something has "always been that way" doesn't make it right, doesn't mean there is no room for improvement, doesn't mean that change is bad.

if i heard such a criticism, i would point out that it is conservatives that are naive - and then ask whichever narrow minded person who was making the statement some questions about "the world." not foreign affairs, mind - but "THE WORLD." 9 times out of 10 your verbal sparring partner will reveal how little they know about life outside the US, at which point you can sadly shake your head and look at them with a sad, but knowing gaze. (usually let them keep talking too, because that is often good for a laugh ;-) )

I know of a quote - you can look it up - about how if you're not liberal, you are on the wrong side of history. Wouldn't you love to see Truman - the WWI vet - comment on GWB? Wish we had a Dem to do that now.

HA. This coming from a group who promotes Intellegent Design as a hard science. And WE are ignorant about how the world operates?

To be a little less tongue in cheek, if the founders of America had just given up and accepted the status quo, there would never have been an independant America. Liberals work to change the world to make it a better place. Conservatives want to make sure the world stays the same or retrogresses.
