Camp Casey in Chico, CA is up and running
I understand we are the 4th "Camp Casey" to be up and running!!!

We have our "camp" set up and ready for all that want to join us in the coming days. Food-Not Bombs provided a great meal at dinner and drinks and ice were donated by local vendors and a local motel.

Top population was about 25 earlier this evening with about 10 staying the night. We have scoped out all the local bars that have bathroom access and have located all the sprinkler heads that are buried in the grass... Hopefully our signs will be protected by the make-shift tent we have set up...Sprinklers are due to come on around 1am.

We have had a great show of support from the local traffic that passes by with much honking of horns, waving and yells of encouragement.

The poem written by Casey's family was read and had a powerful impact on those listening.

We spoke with one mother who's son is AWOL in Europe.

We plan on making 1847+ crosses during our stay and will get help from the local college and high school students that pass by when school starts on Tuesday.

A reporter from the Chico News and Review will be by at 6am ish for photos.

No fire ants here and even the mosquitoes have been kept at bay with the few citronella candles I brought down.

Off to get more supplies ready for the morning.

In solidarity, Camp Casey, Chico

7. Chico, California is about 90 miles north of Sacramento
at the northern edge of the Central Valley. Temps here run about 95-100 this week, with 70's in the evening. Great camping out weather!!

Camp Casey, Chico is currently located at Children's Park/Playground at the western edge of The Esplanade and 1st Street.

Someone was in phone contact with the Crawford Peace House to update them on our status earlier tonight.

Hope to see lots of Duers in the morning!!!

May this be the final wake-up call to all Americans to help put a stop to this senseless, illegal, terrorist war by the current adminstration before one more precious life is lost in the quest for oil by those greedy b*stards.

They will NOT get my son...

9. Cool. Yay Chico ...
The Esplanade, huh? My first guess was the park in front of the post office.

I live within 40 minutes of Chico.

These Camp Caseys across the country remind me of the mock shantytowns on college campuses during the anti-apartheid protests of the mid-'80s.

There was power then, too. And we won.

22. Update from Camp Casey, Chico
Hopefully will have pics in a day or two,...

Things went smoothly through the night, only a group of water balloon throwers, but that was probably drunk college students looking for any possible target.

Drums and even bagpipes were played for those at camp.

Population has ranged from 10-20 throughout the day with lots of supporters stopping in to sign the card for Cindy.

Everyone here sends hugs, love and support to Cindy.

Have to leave as I am late for the 6pm meeting....

Will check back in here tomorrow noonish.

In solidarity, Camp Casey, Chico

Shouldn't there be a Camp Casey in Wyoming, since that's obviously the seat of power right now?

24. hmmm...Camp Casey franchises
all independently run but in solidarity nationwide with Cindy Sheehan on the quest to figure out "why are we still in Iraq?"
Bush thought Rove getting indicted was his worst nightmare, this protest is spiraling out of his control and is framing the war in terms of the family and no longer a battle against terrorism.

30. Camp Casey Chico update
Just got back from Chico, fortunately it has cooled down and there's
no bugs. It was fairly quite, with nothing but positive responses.
No problems with the Police or State Parks, a very mellow place.
I've tried to post photos, but I'm a newbie, can I get a little help please!

32. Photo help & news story on Camp Casey Chico
Calikid,

Don't ask me what I did to get this photo to appear, but it looks like all you need to do is copy the url below and just change the individual number for each photo to get the rest of the pictures to show up. Feel free to pm me, or whatever it is called on this form.

News Story on Camp Chico.

I am off now to fight with the high school administration about the new opt-out forms that they have included in the parent's right form.

Peace-seekers find common cause at Camp Casey in Chico

Their question is rather simple, yet getting an answer seems almost impossible. But that doesn't matter to them: They will continue to ask and continue to camp....

...Camp Casey has begun in Chico, with about 20 people dedicated to seeking the "real" answer to the same question Sheehan has: Why?...

..."This is not a war," said Robert Trausch, a Vietnam veteran who will be camping out as long as he has to at Children's Playground downtown. "It's an invasion and an occupation. The men and women dying are dying because of false reasons," he said, "not democracy; they're dying because rich people want oil."...

...Trausch, along with many others camping out, just wants troops to start coming home. Peace is what should drive this country, not war, he said....

..."You bring peace by building infrastructures, education — not by the end of a missile," he said....

34. Awesome! Some Advice PLEASE!
I emailed a gal previously from Tempe Az. now living in Chico....(hint:you have a friend there with my same name..not a common name) who I had met thru the anti-war movement...she should be with you camped in Chico....am not giving out names here trying to be discrete. :) I'm in Az. and was trying to get this going here too. Where are you camping? Is this private property? County? We are trying to find the right place, preferably visible to traffic, city? But are having trouble with finding a locale we will not be trespassing on.....don't mind getting arrested though we would like to stay camped for more than a night! LOL! Please email me, if you've figured out who this is, if not, please advise on this thread if you have any words of wisdom as to how to go about this.

Anyhow, I'm so proud of ALL of YOU! WOOHOO! "If you build it they WILL come!"

36. on starting a new camp
The camp is located on what I believe is City property as it is in a city park. We are NOT sleeping there, but some people may be found "meditating" during the early hours...

I haven't figured it out yet, I am horrible with names, but there are 3 others with MY name...including one from AZ...

You may want to check with your local city parks about using the park, or perhaps you can find a local, sympathetic property owner that has a high visibility location.

37. Thanks
yes that is the direction we are going in. I love to "meditate" LOL!
Brilliant! So, what about tents, how have you gotten around that? Sorry for all these questions...just am really anxious to get this rolling along.
Also, you misunderstood....my name is the same as the friend of the person who moved from Tempe to chico........Oh god....I just read back on that......LOL! Im cracking myself up here. Well anyhow, I sent her our press release stating that we are going to "turn ourselves in" if and when Cindy is arrested, also put out a call to action urging others to do the same and to begin building solidarity camps. She (you?) emailed me back about Amanda Ripley from Time magazine and said that indeed you were in the process of building Camp Casey-Chico.

Sounds like one of those, a friend of a friends cousins, uncle knows someone....but really I just dont want to give out names on this site. ;)

40. Supplies needed
Thanks for the welcomes, I read/lurk more than I post...

Possibly ice, cookies are always a good thing (chocolate chip preferred here), maybe a tarp or two, batteries for flashlights, although I understand the Chico PD provided more than ample light from the squad car lights light night...

I am headed into town for a meeting w/son's principal regarding their new OPT-Out forms (which have an added notation that if you check the box to not give info to the military, then it will be withheld from everyone/every organization including scholarship info etc).

I have a meeting with the person at school district headquarters tomorrow.

But I am off-topic here...

I will post other needed supplies when I return.
