What is truly sad about the Sheehan affair right now is that the whole world is watching. All over the foreign press, they quote American media, in particular the Vacaville Reporter, my hometown newspaper. They are reading things like "anti-American" and "socialists" and "traitors" and quite frankly, they are shaking their heads and laughing at us. Many of these foreign papers come from countries who have experienced blind nationalism and rampant communism and socialism. When we claim it over here, we look silly and uneducated.
In a Gallup poll prior to the 2004 election, well past 80% of the polled globe thought Bush was the wrong choice because they see the obvious. The justification for Iraq has changed and contradicted itself time and again. Currently, over 70% of Americans see Mr. Bush's supposed "strength" as nothing more than arrogance. The names of CIA agents have been leaked, and shrugged off. They are now throwing a party to celebrate 9/11 at the Pentagon this year. The Downing Street Minutes show a clear intention to fix facts to justify an ideology.
I am astonished at anyone who would continue to defend this man and these policies. Being a good American, a good Republican isn't blindly following where ever someone leads you. It's asking questions and holding people accountable. When Lyndon B. Johnson lied about reasons to go into Vietnam, the Democratic party did not support him for re-election. I know there are decent Republicans out there. Why aren't you doing the same?
