Cindy's Victory
“This thing, the wheels are coming off it.”

- Gen. Barry McCaffrey, after returning from an inspection of Iraq, 08/12/2005

They are sunburned and storm-lashed. They sleep in tents that sit along the muddy earth of drainage ditches by the side of the road. They have been heckled by ‘counter-demonstrators’ who chanted “We don’t care!” during a rendition of ‘God Bless America.’ They have been attacked by fire ants and hassled by local health inspectors. On Thursday morning, at about 5:30am, they were blasted awake by a fourteen-car convoy of Secret Service SUVs which roared through the camp at high speed while leaning on their horns the whole time.

They have been jolted with fear when a local resident fired his weapon into the air several times to make them go away. When the shooter, a Larry Mattlage, was asked why he was firing his gun, he said, “We're going to start doing our war and it's going to be underneath the law. Whatever it takes.” It is safe to say, therefore, that their lives have been threatened.

The thing is, they’ve already won.

Cindy Sheehan and her ever-growing band of supporters intend to stay in those ditches outside Bush’s Crawford “ranch” until he comes out to talk or until August 31st, whichever comes first. They have been there for more than a week now, garnering more and more attention from the national and international press. Yes, they are tired. Yes, they are uncomfortable. Yes, they have already won.

The nearly 2,000 crosses, crescents and Stars of David that make up the Arlington West cemetery, erected by the demonstrators a few days ago to represent all the fallen American soldiers in Iraq, stretch almost a mile down the country road. Bush had to drive past that on Friday when he went to his fundraising shindig at the Broken Spoke Ranch. It takes a while to drive past them all. This man, who cannot abide hearing or seeing anything in the way of dissent or disagreement, saw those crosses whistle past his window. That is a victory.

On Friday, as the camp prepared for the arrival of the counter-demonstrators, a huge diesel pickup truck rumbled into camp with its nose menacingly pointed towards the tents. It sat for a while, and everyone waited to see what would happen. Ann Wright, the main organizer of camp activities, finally approached the truck and met the driver. He was a father, Wright discovered, and his son had been killed in Iraq.

He did not agree with this protest, he said, but wanted to know if his son’s name was on one of the crosses in the Arlington West cemetery. Ann Wright invited the man to walk the rows of crosses and find his son’s name. They found it. Ann and the man in the truck sat down in front of the cross, wrapped their arms around each other, and wept. Later, the man shared a beer with Cindy Sheehan and told her he loved her. That is a victory, one that surpasses any sort of mean politics.

For three years now, both before the invasion of Iraq began and then after it was unleashed, millions of people have marched and screamed and stomped in order to try to put a stop to this disaster. The Bush administration was not pushed off its tracks even an inch in all this time. Discussions and debates on why we are there and whether or not we should leave have been bunted aside.

Half a dozen reasons for the invasion and occupation have been put forth – weapons of mass destruction, ties to al Qaeda terrorism, the building of a democracy, Hussein was a bad man – but in the end, the debate is halted by the kind of brainless thinking that left us in Vietnam for far too long: “We are there, so we have to stay.” This was the accepted wisdom.

Not anymore.

All the protests, all the articles, all the books, all the whistleblowers, all the criticism combined has not packed the kind of punch that one mother in a ditch has delivered to this administration’s carefully crafted fantasy vision of what is happening in Iraq. Suddenly, Bush has been forced to go before cameras and try to explain why staying in Iraq is the only option available. Suddenly, the accepted wisdom isn’t so accepted anymore. A majority of Americans, according to every available poll, agree with the lady in the ditch and not with the president.

Bush isn’t doing a very good job of explaining his side of things, and his people seem unable to keep their stories straight. After the fourteen Marines from Ohio were killed in Iraq, Bush got up and stated that it would be unreasonable for him to lay down a timetable for withdrawal. Yet at the same time, his generals were bent over maps and logistics notebooks, trying to do exactly that.

The Los Angeles Times on Saturday took a look at the mixed messages coming from the war party. “Are the president and the Pentagon on the same page over the war in Iraq?” asked the Times. “That question is percolating in Washington after President Bush twice in the last 10 days tried to clarify a message sent by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and military leaders. After Rumsfeld and other Pentagon officials indicated their desire to shift away from discussing the struggle against terrorism as a ‘war’ - saying it placed too much emphasis on military solutions to terrorism - Bush repeatedly used the word ‘war’ in an Aug. 3 speech to conservative state legislators.”

“Then, continued the Times article, “on Thursday, Bush dismissed as ‘rumors’ and ‘speculation’ reports that U.S. commanders were contemplating significant withdrawals of American troops from Iraq next year. His comments came after Army Gen. George W. Casey, the top U.S. military official in Iraq, and Army Lt. Gen. John R. Vines, the top ground commander, had publicly raised exactly that possibility.”

Hm.

On Sunday, out of nowhere, the Washington Post published a page-one story titled “US Lowers Sights on What Can Be Achieved in Iraq.” The story stated, “The Bush administration is significantly lowering expectations of what can be achieved in Iraq, recognizing that the United States will have to settle for far less progress than originally envisioned during the transition due to end in four months. The United States no longer expects to see a model new democracy, a self-supporting oil industry or a society in which the majority of people are free from serious security or economic challenges.”

The article goes on to describe how any “democracy” will have to bend itself around the laws of Islam, a fact that chucks the secular-government talking points into the round file. Iraqi women, according to the story, should not get their hopes up about being granted significant rights of any kind. The kicker came in the third paragraph, which quotes an unnamed US official saying, “What we expected to achieve was never realistic given the timetable or what unfolded on the ground. We are in a process of absorbing the factors of the situation we're in and shedding the unreality that dominated at the beginning.”

In other words, the whole thing was a Charlie Foxtrot from soup to nuts. There are no weapons of mass destruction, the terrorists connected to 9/11 were not there (though there are plenty there now learning how best to kill Americans with bombs), and democracy is not to be found anywhere on the menu. The hearts and flowers we were promised have not come, and are not coming. Sure, Hussein is still a bad man, but that rationale for this war is an outright laugher when compared to the cost of getting rid of him. Though Bush clings desperately to his canned lines to defend his actions, the facts speak for themselves. This whole bloody enterprise has been a colossal, expensive, murderous failure.

The funny part is that Bush could probably have kept the public fantasy intact with one simple act. He could have jumped into his pickup truck last Saturday, when Cindy Sheehan was alone except for her sister in that ditch, and driven down to see her. He could have invited her into the shotgun seat and driven her around the neighborhood for a few minutes. He could have then gone back up to the “ranch” and told the press corps that he met with her, and that they had looked into each other’s hearts. That would have been the end of it.

He did not do that. Now, his generals are at loggerheads with the public line coming from the White House about getting out of Iraq. Unnamed officials are going on the record to state that the whole plan was hare-brained from the word “go,” and that the entire deal sits now in the ashes of its own utterly ruined failure. Bush has to keep explaining why we have to stay, why rearranging the deck chairs on this Titanic is a noble and worthwhile process. Meanwhile, the whole world mocks him for hiding from one woman and her broken heart.

Cindy Sheehan has done this with one act of conscience. She has managed to do what no other protest or action or statement has been able to do. She has knocked the wheels right off this absurd applecart. She has already won.

Her son would be very, very proud.

119. Doesn't matter now, whether they admit it or not
I feel we're really at the end of this...
Not that the next part is going to be easy.

But looks to me like the media blackout has been pummelled enough, this is the perfect time and the perfect last straw.

Prize-Awarder: The Norwegian Nobel Committee, Oslo

http://nobelprize.org/peace/nomination/nominators.html

I'm sure there are several members of DU who qualify...let's do it!

In fact, I think Vinca (since it was Vinca's idea) ought to start a separate thread with the idea. Find someone qualified, as outlined, and get them to make the nomination---Nominations are made between September and February--the award is given to recipients after about a year's time.

What a fabulous idea! Since former winners are also eligible
to make nominations, why don't we start a letter writing campaign to former President Jimmy Carter who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002?
He has recently been in the news for his criticisms of the Iraq War, from the beginning.

Should those of us stuck at home do a phone in campaign to the White House to express our support of Cindy? Considering how rudely they have been treated by the President, who incidentally is supposed to be everyone's President, not just Chevron's and Unocal's, it would seem proper to express our disapproval.

Does anyone have the number of the Crawford Ranch? Maybe we should have a phone in between five and six in the morning.

Cindy's Peace Seeds, are a BLOWING IN THE WIND~

Bob Dylan - Blowing In The Wind Lyrics

How many roads must a man walk down,
before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove fly,
before she sleeps in the sand?
And how many times must a cannon ball fly,
before they're forever banned?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

How many years can a mountain exist,
before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist,
before they're allowed to be free?
And how many times can a man turn his head,
and pretend that he just doesn't see?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times must a man look up,
before he sees the sky?
And how many ears must one man have,
before he can hear people cry ?
And how many deaths will it take till we know,
that too many people have died?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind,
the answer is blowing in the wind.

I hadn't heard about the guy who shot a firearm into the sky & declared that "they would start a war" that would be "underneath the law", "whatever it takes". The magnifying glass is on the "We don't care" crowd as well.

This war began with less than four wheels. But not on the vehicle - in the chickenhawk-in-chief's unsound mind.

31. "the lady in the ditch"
What a great way to talk about Cindy, as opposed to the Crawford Coward.

This is the part that brought tears to my eyes. It may also describe the most powerful thing that Cindy has done, in reaching out to all those who have lost loved oned because of this illegitimate war:

"On Friday, as the camp prepared for the arrival of the counter-demonstrators, a huge diesel pickup truck rumbled into camp with its nose menacingly pointed towards the tents.

That is a victory, one that surpasses any sort of mean politics."

18. Excellent piece.
I hope it will appear in other places, as well.

Yes, she has won, and it is the fierce, uncompromising love of a mother that breaks open the cracks in the empty shell of his poisonous bully pedagogy.

Love vs fear: love wins every time.

Being the mother of sons myself, I know that mothers everywhere understand and support this woman's stand. Even the fully indoctrinated and cowed on the religious right secretly understand, if they cannot openly support.

I'm a peace-loving pacifist. I'm also a mother, and I would face down an entire world of hate and greed to protect or support my sons. I am many, many miles from Texas, but each one of those crosses has been blessed with my tears, and has strengthened my resolve to stand side by side with all who will against the onslaught of destruction the Bush regime has brought us.

19. Cindy is the miracle we've all been waiting for!
And you're doing a fine job as well, Mr. Pitt...
But it's not enough. It's not over til' it's over. The papers and pundits regularly refer to this extraordinary event as a circus. We need MORE people out there; we need to show the world that this is NOT some little dust-devil she's started out there, but a full-blown PERFECT STORM of fed-up fury on the part of the American people!

(Won’t You Please Come Out To) Crawford
(to the tune of Chicago by Graham Nash - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young)

Now our mother's bound and gagged
And they've left her in a ditch
Won't you please come out to Crawford, come and shout
In a land that's known as Freedom
How can life be such a bitch?
Won't you please come out to Crawford--that’s what freedom is about!
We can change the world...

23. No, that's intentional
Read the word in contect with the sentence:

"Sure, Hussein is still a bad man, but that rationale for this war is an outright laugher when compared to the cost of getting rid of him."

A 'Laugher' is something absurd and amusing on its face. "Did you see George trying to defend himself? Boy, that was a laugher."

Thanks for the eyes, tho. :)

She's done more to twist the nuts on the war machine than anyone I have ever seen.

46. "A majority of Americans, according to every available poll, agree with..
...the lady in the ditch and not with the president." --Will

And they always have. 58% of the American people opposed the Iraq BEFORE the invasion. I'll never forget that stat. Feb. '03. Across the board in all polls. Before all the lies were exposed; before the full horror and costs of it were known. 58%!

The American people didn't trust Bush then. THEN.

63% of the American people oppose torture UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. May '04.

Name the issue. The Iraq war. Torture. Social Security. The deficit. Women's rights. A great majority of Americans oppose every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range.

And that's not even to mention Bush's dismal approval ratings over the last year (so low Zogby said he couldn't win). 40% today and falling.

Then, when you look at a few facts about the 2004 election-- that the Dems blew the Repubs away in new voter registration in 2004, nearly 60/40 (!), that Kerry won the exit polls--the only independent gage of what really happened--and that 80% of the vote was tabulated by major Bush donors and supporters at two electronic voting machine companies, Diebold and ES&S, using SECRET, PROPRIETARY PROGRAMMNG CODE--code so secret that not even elected Secretaries of State have the right to review it--you begin to realize that the American people are not stupid, are not lazy, are not yahoos, are not turning into fascists, and in fact are overwhelmingly progressive in their views, but have been DISEMPOWERED and DISENFRANCHISED.

One person who maybe stands to benefit from all this will be the war Democrat that our Corporate Rulers choose for us, with their secret, proprietary programming code, who will promise to do a better war in the Middle East: more troops, more money, continued good times for war profiteers--and maybe with a promise NOT to loot Social Security.

Unless we restore our right to vote--and remove these election theft machines from our midst (into Boston Harbor, I say!)--that's the BEST outcome we can hope for. And that the Bush Cartel doesn't nuke Iran in the meantime. According to Carl Sagan in his book "The Cold and the Dark," even a limited nuclear exchange will destroy our planet's atmosphere, and that will be that.

For those who can't go to Crawford, there is much that you can do to restore our right to vote. Join your local election reform group--or form your own. Start yelling at your local/state election officials. (They have much to answer for. Many have become very corrupt within the billion dollar industry that our election systems have become.)

Go to the "2004 Election Results and Discussion Forum" for information and action ideas:

This is a print-out for a resounding kick in the butt reminder. DISEMPOWERED and DISENFRANCHISED you bettcha! But we're not a majority of stupidity, rather robbed.

If we want our country back and away from corporate-America, it's time we start yelling on local levels. What I've learned from Cindy is not to be afraid. How did we ever become so afraid of our leaders whom we place there?

I think it was from becoming the "couch-potato" generation.

57. The truth has no expiration date.
My everlasting gratitude to two great American patriots, Cindy Sheehan and William Pitt, for helping me understand this.

There have been times over the past three years when I've been in depair because I came so close to believing that evil is stronger than good. Especially after the last stolen election, I thought "they" would always have the advantage because they have no morality. They are willing to do whatever it takes to win, unhampered by any quaint considerations of ethics or decency.

But because of what's been happening in a ditch outside of Crawford this past week, I now understand that it isn't true--and I think I finally understand WHY it isn't true.

A lie has power only as long as it is believed. If enough people believe it, and believe it for long enough, it may have tremendous power. It may retain that power for centuries, even millennia, but sooner or later it MUST die when the truth is revealed. OTOH the truth has no expiration date.

Don't get me wrong: I'm very grateful that the truth about the Iraq war DIDN'T have to wait for centuries or millennia to become apparent to the nation. But it's precisely the eternal quality of Truth shining through the events of the past week that are the source of their energy and power.

I look at the engraving of Lady Wisdom I keep on the shelf above my monitor and I can only say, "Thank you!" And my undying gratitude also to Cindy Sheehan and William Pitt, and everyone else who faithfully serves the Truth.

As I was out and about today, my thoughts turned to Cindy Sheehan. I kept on thinking about how because of this one brave woman, I now have more hope than I've had in years. This ongoing roller coaster ride of scandal to scandal to scandal that we've endured, hoping each one would take root and then being disappointed as each one seemed to fade away, now doesn't seem so hopeless. This one woman has focused the attention on Bush's crime of war like no other scandal has. All because she has this incredible courage to speak from her heart, and ask a tough question with more courage than all the so-called journalists.

Hats off to you, Cindy. Thank you for giving us hope.

Will look for final version.

Don't know if this has been on DU yet, but here is a wonderful article from a Kentucky paper.

By Missy Comley Beattie

He is number 1,828, 1,829 or 1,830. We don't know for sure, because so many died last week.

Marine Lance Cpl. Chase Johnson Comley died when his vehicle was hit head on by a suicide bomber. His death admits his family to a club no one wants to join: the grieving, questioning families who have heard the dreaded ring of the doorbell followed by a messenger's words, "We regretfully inform you that your son ..."

You realize that nothing you've thought, done or felt has prepared you for this reality. The feeling is so much worse than a broken heart. It is an evisceration.

As I write, Chase is being flown to Dover Air Force Base. His 6-foot-4 body is in a coffin draped with the American flag. He loved his family, his country, his Sayre classmates and his life, but we don't think he loved his mission in Iraq

It also was beautifully written and incredibly sad and real.

And, finally, think about flowers: The flowers for Chase Comley will be presented not by grateful Iraqis but by loved ones honoring him as he's lowered to his grave and buried in our hearts.

Will, your words are so awesome... I just want to plaster the streets and buildings all over the country with them to wake the rest of sleeping out of their stupor. When you wrote about the truck driver, my steely resolve to control my emotions melted and I just broke down.

I'm crying tears of joy at our victory and bitter sorrow for Cindy's loss of her dear son, Casey, who, as you say, would be so very proud of his mom. I'm profoundly grateful to her for what she's doing for MY little sons, one of them not even in kindergarten yet. God bless her and keep her. She is one AMAZING soul.

I've written some of my best blog posts since Cindy Sheehan began her protest/standoff but I have to admit this post is at least as good as anything that I've written about Cindy. From one Bay Stater to another, I salute you. But I'm not done writing about Cindy. Not by a long fucking shot.

You make me want to be a better blogger.

98. Can someone explain this?
“We're going to start doing our war and it's going to be underneath the law. Whatever it takes.”

What the f*** does this mean? Do you mean to tell me that there's a guy living next door to the "Western White House" who's trying to instigate a civil war, and the Secret Service are more concerned about an unarmed grieving mother than this guy?

OMG, it makes me want to hurt myself. :banghead:

126. You don't get it yet, emr. Keep reading about Cindy & VFP
She, individually, is about peace and is a peaceful person.

The VFP as an organization is about peace and peaceful means. Many in the Vets for Peace have seen the worst, have put their lives on the line for this country, and only a fool would question their patriotism. But their work is about noviolence and peaceful means. (You can google for info about them, and about Arlington West.)

As for Arlington West, I personally have witnessed the impact that it has on the families and friends of the fallen. They come to those crosses on the beach in Santa Barbara, and whether or not they agree with this war they are just overcome. This president, this administration, have tried their utmost to keep a lid on any public acknowledgement of the depth of sacrifice that is being made by our service-members and their families. AW is a very public memorial, and every cross has a name. The crosses go up once a week -- they are only up for one day at a time -- but people actually bring flowers, actually kneel in the sand, actually cry. Young marines in full dress uniform walk the rows and search for the names of their comrades. They kneel in the sand...

This trucker who lost his son in Iraq -- do you think he went away unchanged by this enounter at Camp Casey? This peaceful, healing encounter?

Btw -- welcome to DU.

Hekate

107. Cindy Sheehan will go down in history.
The most telling part of her story is the way she embraced the pro-Bush father of a dead soldier. No matter how much these disgusting people try to smear her, she has not only stood up to it, she has risen above it, and proved that she is a bigger person than all of them. Not the least of whom is hiding from her in his phony ranch.

* could have fended off this initative by Cindy just by driving his truck up there. A bigger man and a true Texan would have stopped even if he disagreed to see if the lady needed anything. He has had the opportunity twice coming & going from his ranch but did not. Is this any way to treat a lady, a mother, one whose grief is unending. A gentleman would stop and offer to help or try to console. Barbara your son doesn't care about you if he treats a woman this way.

Someone who can make you feel emotions like that is damn good, although I admit, you have some excellent subject matter to write about. It should be on the front page of every newspaper, but then again, I don't want Mr. Bungfeed to ever become part of the corporate media.

Cindy Sheehan is a hero, and a true patriot. Because of her I will never again think one person can't make a difference. And Will, you nailed it in that beautiful piece of writing.

I wish someone would have handed the old gun shooter an enlistment form. If he wants a war, he's badly needed somewhere else.

BungFEEB...Mr. BungFEEB indeed! That's the guy I meant!

I want to join your fan club, and fix you up with my lovely, almost 25 year old daughter who lives in the Boston area, but she's not much into politics at this stage of her life. Nor is my 22 year old son, but at least I've raised their awareness by sending articles and boring them to death when talking to them...

Having been awakened from my own stupor of ignorant bliss by the bastard in the WH...or, I should say "at the ranch", I am so impressed by young people who saw what was going on way before I did. Your article just plain nailed it, and I think Cindy has started something that's just going to keep on growing, and possibly, finally, turn the tide. Keep up the good work, Mr. BungFEEB!

113. ah, the wonderful ditch
What power they (Texas law enforcement) handed Cindy when they confined her to a ditch. This thing is taking on "born in a manger" proportions.

The contrast between a ditch and a big black SUV or a Western White House "ranch" or Air Force One is just too powerful. What a metaphor this ditch is.

She is physically in the ditch but she's really in the catbird seat. He physically cavorts with the most splendiferous symbols of power but he's really in the ditch.

And don't you just love the irony of bush heading to The Broken Spoke Ranch for his fundraiser? If there was ever a "slogan" for bush's presidency, it's "the broken spoke."

Loved your piece, Will. It is so good to have you to put the pieces together for us and help us make sense of it all.

125. It's beautiful - as I was ranting a couple of ...
mornings ago, I couldn't fathom the leader of our country leaving the mother of a dead son - in a ditch? That painted a lousy picture, belongs in his presidential profile. His portrait needs Cindy in the background, sitting in a muddy ditch. Just think, the whole world could remember him just this way. But, I'm sure we will, always.

142. Amazing job all around, Will
This article shows how Cindy's efforts honor the fallen of this war better than any military funeral ever could, better than Ted Koppel reading lists of names ever could, and especially better than Bush doing drive-by visits with the grieving families ever could. She has touched not only those of us who are against the war, but also those who have supported it and paid the price of losing a loved one.

Cindy Sheehan is doing the only thing more important than ending this war; she is ending it with unity, comfort, and hope to the families of those who have lost their lives.

She is one of them, after all.

Great writing, as always, Will. What happens to all those crosses? I've kicked this around in my head for almost 2 years. I have a high profile lot, and room for 2000 crosses. Unless someone has a plan for the crosses, I know where they'll get a ton of pub over Labor Day weekend. We put em up in my yard(just outside Chicago) we'll have 5 local channels broadcasting from my driveway within hours. Just offerring. I can't get to Crawford, but trust me, put those crosses in my yard, and it will go national. Good luck, God bless.

144. Is this for real???
Found this whilst looking around online:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8941525/site/newsweek/

It's bascially a very surreal article about The Smirk being super emotional while visiting with other families who've lost loved ones in the Iraq war. For example:

"President Bush was wearing "a huge smile," but his eyes were red and he looked drained by the time he got to the last widow, Crystal Owen, a third-grade schoolteacher who had lost her husband in Iraq. "Tell me about Mike," he said immediately. "I don't want my husband's death to be in vain," she told him. The president apologized repeatedly for her husband's death. When Owen began to cry, Bush grabbed her hands. "Don't worry, don't worry," he said, though his choking voice suggested that he had worries of his own. The president and the widow hugged. "It felt like he could have been my dad," Owen recalled to NEWSWEEK. "It was like we were old friends. It almost makes me sad. In a way, I wish he weren't the president, just so I could talk to him all the time.""

Not to mention:

"Before Bush left the meeting, he paused in the middle of the room and said to the families, "I will never feel the same level of pain and loss you do. I didn't lose anyone close to me, a member of my family or someone that I love. But I want you to know that I didn't go into this lightly. This was a decision that I struggle with every day."

As he spoke, Ascione could see the grief rising through the president's body. His shoulder slumped and his face turned ashen. He began to cry and his voice choked. He paused, tried to regain his composure and looked around the room. "I am sorry, I'm so sorry," he said."

Anyone have any idea how accurate (or not) this is? Apparently the issue of Newsweek that contains the article hits the stands on August 22nd.

Wondering how Cindy Sheehan will weigh in on it?
