ALL TEXAS REDNECKS INVITED TO COME SHOOTING ON MATLAGE'S LAND???
Edited on Sun Aug-14-05 02:26 PM by DistressedAmerican
THIS IS BAD STUFF! What should we be doing here folks?

We gotta get folks on this ASAP.

It is on the audio Link in the first thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4347367&mesg_id=4347367

Direct link:
http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=mattlage1

Check it out!!!

Some specifics and quotes if you can't listen (Ok, Not a full transcription and full of typos. But it is very close...):

Inviting All Rednecks to COME ONE DOWN AND JOIN HIM IN SHOOTING ON HIS LAND!!!

THIS IS BAD BAD BAD!!!

(asked "Well, you know this road is going to be shut down")

"This area's tired of this party and we gonna start doin' our war and we're gonna do it under the law. But, we are gonna do what ever it takes."

So, y'all go find some other place to do what you ever do. 'cuz this is our front yard and back yard."

(Asked if he means the protesters "y'all? You mean the protesters?)

"I'm talking this whole damn country. Our neighbors and friends and this is our country."

"And if this group says they are so much in Jesus and neighbor rights and all they pretend to be, why don't they show it? You gotta it you gotta live Jesus christ and this is not Jesus christ, I see."

(approached by an ABC reporter - Miguel? Garcia tried calling yesterday)

"Well, I wanna get on letterman! I wanna get on John Leno(??? yes he says actually says John)!"

"And this is a joke out here. Y'all done yer rights. and I believe in your cause. this ain't about Democrat this ain't about republicans. This is about my rights and these people's rights as American citizens who live here. You done your thing you done your show now move on."

"I don't like the war anymore than anybody else!"

"If everybody will leave right now they go home as winners and George Bush can enjoy his vacation like everybody else."

"I want the whole world to know what this group is doing. The started out doing right. Now they're doing wrong. when they first got here I understood the cause and I appreciated it"

"Everybody here is sick of it."

Complains about "wading through all these people."

"What this is is a war of porta potties."

"The war where the most porta potties is gonna win."

"Ya'll got started out going to the bathroom in a 5 gallon bucket and now I see three porta potties. How many more porta potties are you gonna put up here? And George Bush has more porta potties so if I was a betting man I'd say, he's gonna win."

"So, let's not make this any more ridiculous than it already is."

(Confirmed firing shotgun repeatedly into the air. Two shots.)

Complains about protesters messing up dove hunting that begins in September.

"We been on the land for 125 years and this group ain't running us out."

"I got a right. I got a right to fire up in the air."

"So, If you would all leave this whole community would be behind ya."

Asked name and acreage he owns. Responds that it does not matter. but he pays taxes to the middle of the road and mows it. I assume this includes the "ditch"

"This group is like frosty the Snowman here. It's gonna melt and it'll be back another day. and we're just waiting for it to melt."

"we got one group over there that won't give up and one group over there that won't give up and we're caught in the middle. Do you Understand"

"This ain't New York. This ain't California and it ain't Washington and I'm not political. I'm just a tax paying citizen that wants my rights. and that's all I've got to say "

"And I will be shooting all night long. If anyone stays they better get ready for some gun fire. And if we don't get anything, I want every redneck in Texas to come on my property her and we're really gonna have a show."
=====================================================================

Threatens to continue shooting ALL NIGHT

Invites every redneck in the state to come shooting as well

BAD SHIT!!!

Starting to look more like the civil rights movement by the minute!

5. He just sounds like one of the old fellows down at the store.
He just wants everybody off his property, and he's an old asshole. I see it every day. He's not dangerous, and he even said he "didn't like George" and that he was non-political. However, when he invited "every redneck in Texas" to go shooting on his property, he may have called down more than he wants. The really dangerous crazies could start coming out now.

I'd say his wife is mortified.

6. Not that I agree with violence, but the guy is correct in that
people shouldn't be trapsing around on his lawn. I wouldn't want that and no one else would, either. I do feel sorry for the people who have to live near the Shrub because you can't blame Americans for wanting to protest the BushCo. illegal war in front of Shrub's house.

Maybe Mr. Matlage and his friends need to run the Shrubs out of town instead of the troop supporters.

That said, he sounds like he needs some edjamakashun.

and it definitely sounds like the ditch is his deal. County land. Free speech zone now!

Sorry.

We'll leave when shrub does and not a day sooner.

Let's just hope Cindy's are taking this seriously. Some security may be needed in the not too distant future.

Right also that Bush should be driven out. He has made this man's life a hell just by moving threre. His family was there 120 years before this disaster befell them. Tough folks indeed.

============================

Mr. Mattlage,

Your snowman analogy is a bit off. We will not melt away. We'll just get out of your ditch. We are an avalanche that is going to sweep every corner of the country.

Someday you will have a national historic marker and your house will be added to the rgister of national historic places. Be proud of these brave folks and bring them some water and TP!

I just listened to the audio, so you may well be correct.

However, I still contend it's probably nerve-wracking for the neighbors, which is why they need to get rid of Shrub - not the troop supporters.

ON EDIT: Just found out that he profitted from being Bush's neighbor. My sympathy for his being a home-owner there is now gone:

over the fence on the ranch of one of our neighbors. When I showed the pictures to the woman, whose property we were camped on, she got all flustered and said, "You didn't go on ***'s property did you? He will shoot you first if you do." I assured her it was over the fence, but I guess that's how they do things in Texas. You can shoot anyone who trespasses it seems.

21. Mattlage is right
These redneck towns/counties that have gun rights and property rights
make Mattlage legally correct that he can shoot on his land (as long as he's not threatening bodily harm to anyone) anytime he wants.

This is a BIG mess. He's made it very clear in the tape that he's just practicing for upcoming dove hunting season. I don't think there's anything the sheriff can do to stop him--other than to make sure he's
not shooting in the direction of people.

However, if a bunch of rednecks respond to his invitation and they start taking shots at Camp Casey in the middle of the night, then he's going to be held liable as the property owner if anyone is hurt.

He's right about operating "under the law". But he might have just opened up a tremendous liability for himself if he's joined by rednecks who don't give a damn about breakin' the law or hurting protesters.

Sounds to me like the Camp Casey folks who are there at night may want to think about getting some night vision goggles and posting a sentry to keep watch, or possibly moving into town for the night.

27. Uhmm actually hes going to be a lot more than "liable" in court if any
protester is wounded or killed.

There are countless nuts on this side of the fence that will consider it an act of civil war and will respond in kind.

I know this because I have advised many people that violence only begets violence, in this kind of a matter they can count on the same happening to them as well.

So while Mattlage has every right to do what he is doing he is completely ignorant of the very VERY serious consequences of his actions.

Don't be afraid of this guy. He's just talking the Texas swagger. I'm sure he knows that the quickest way to lose his land is to end up in jail with a nice big civil suit against him. Texas has some pretty solid homestead protection laws, but some of them become vacated if the land is used for the crime.

I do not transcribe quickly. Blah.

Worth it though.

This is a bad sign. When local intimidation started during the civil rights movement this sort of "we are being invaded" mentality led to many senseless deaths.

We will need to be careful out there.

And this guy seems to be AGAINST the war.

Just think what the "We don't care!" chicken hawk crowd may be capable of...

60. This guy would be laughable if what he is doing isn't deadly serious.
I sent the audio of this guys statement on to my sister-in-law. Her husband is an 80-year old Texas who is still working as a rancher/cowboy (rancher of cattle). Both of them come from 4-5th generation ranching families. He in Texas, Santa Rosa Island off California coast and she from Southern Arizona. They have been married for 40-years and have a 3,000 acre ranch near the Arizona, New Mexico border.

Listening to the video the accent is that of my brother-in-law and I found it amusing to hear similar Texan anecdotes.

The difference between these Texans is My brother-in-law detests George W. Bush. While my brother-in-law who single handed runs his ranch and only used hired hands during shipping seasons, carries a gun for self protection against drug runners only. His ranch lies within very mountainous areas and when he rides to check his cattle he must be wary of the drug runners and also mountain lions, bears, etc. Never, ever does he shoot into the air, as he knows that it has to come down somewhere and he would not want to be responsible for killing an illegal Mexican just crossing his ranch looking for work.

This idiot doesn't want to be disturbed by outsiders and he wants his neighbor to enjoy his vacation. His neighbor could have this group dispersed in a moment by just meeting with Cindy Sheehan. He isn't scared of Cindy, He just doesn't give a shit about Cindy, her son or his neighbors.

Why can't these Crawford people acknowledge that they have a few peaceful protestors, unarmed, willing to talk to them and their neighbor. They are fellow Americans who are unable to get Georgie's attention any other way but to sit outside his ranch. While in Iraq, civilians are having their doors kicked in, their children scared, homes and families destroyed on the orders of thier neighbor George W. Bush.

What are the citizens of Crawford sacrificing for their neighbors War in Iraq? They do not want to have to look or listen to the mothers who have lost their sons and daughters because they have no shame.

with circumstances they don't particularly enjoy.

You cannot control absolutely every aspect of your life, no matter how insulated or privileged you are.

This man should realize the matter will be over quickly, and pace himself, as any well-balanced adult would.

He should direct his anger at the man (and his nasty syndicate) behind this world-engulfing crisis.

90. In Texas, people can shoot guns on their own property in the
country. Granted, his comments which equated to "Bring it on" were stupid and seems like if he's gonna bring on gun-toting problems, the Secret service and McClennan County Sheriff's department will be all over him like white on rice.

Don't misunderstand. I'm all for Cindy and the group doing what they're doing and it's legal for them to be on the access road-if it wasn't, from the very first instance, the cops would have been all over it and forced them to move.

That said, is it too much to expect at least a LITTLE empathy for the people that live there? Instead of trashing them, maybe acknowledge that they have a right to not be crazy in love with the fact that their routine is being changed?

gun threats.

Locals that do not threaten me or others with guns (or other means of violence) are just fine in my book. I will empathize with them "until the cows come home". I NEVER said a word about them.

This guy is not in that group.

I do not accept ANY excuse for this type of behavior or recklessly calling on others to join him in it. I understand he may be within the letter of the law. However, this is still completely reckless and unacceptable bahavior.

If anyone on our side had called for folks to come in and start shooting off guns in town, they would be in SS or local LE custody right now.

Stop making excuses for those those that look to oppose free speech on the war with threats and intimidation. We should ALL have a zero tolerance policy on such behavior!

Have some empathy for him, when I see his comments from articles before this where he doesn't like the hoopla, and imagine if, say, a bunch of right-wing fundies showed up on the road in front of your house. 58. Faux news is trying to incite violence according to news-hounds
In the report by Mike Emmanuel, Matledge expressed sympathy for Cindy Sheehan adding that five weeks is just too much time to endure the protesters. The Crawford police reported that it's perfectly legal to shoot a gun as long as you're on your own property. They also said that there was nothing they could do about the protesters.

Larry Matlidge, a colorful personality, told reporters if his brother in law stayed five weeks after Thanksgiving there would be a problem too. He also said that he loves President Bush because the good book says to love your neighbor.

A few minutes later at the beginning of the next hour of FNL at 3PM the tease was more emphatic. "He's locked and loaded and ready to take action." Headline: Get Out Of Town

I can understand property rights, but I think this fella is over the top. He gets to pay taxes(probably small), but he doesn't own that property. It would be hard to see what is such a big deal. So he has to drive by a few folks on the way out, the protest is not scheduled to last forever.

He wants to act so disgusted with all the people there, so he calls a bunch of rednecks to come over and shoot. As much as we all like the American flag, the back of his truck says it all; case of beer and a flag and some shotgun shells. He may be parading as some non-partisan, but his mind is a serious Kool-aid drinker. Make no mistake.

I questioned from the beginning why the camp was getting pushed around. It would seem like their could be some owner nearby that would rent out space for the cars and tents, etc. Did anyone attempt to find a suitable site. Maybe they are all whackos on the nutcase road?

The as*hole is shooting to intimidate the protesters. On CNN, he first said he was praticing for hunting and then half heartedly said he was shooting at a bird and missed. I take it that he really is shooting to intimidate.
If he has a real grievance, he should take it up with the cops and everyone should agree to fix the problem and find a more suitable place for the protest. This guy will only get worse and he already had more time on CNN than Cindy. He is stealing the show.

like. the repugs have come in. that is starting more tension. look at the way you and others talk to me. you are riled. this is a peace movement. are we jocking to get into battle, or are we better than this? is it possible this can be solved with kindness and understanding, perhaps empathy?

and you ask what am i about? i am about listening to this man, and seeing when it started he was nice and supported cindy, to now frustrated. how can we make this work. not how can we fight

i am sorry you and others see me as a traitor. i resolve differently. since cindy will continue to stay, and she is a peaceful person, i would rather she experience a peaceful solution.

that makes me a bad guy. i dont think so.

i dont think we need to create this man into a monster either. yet. i dont think the ones down there are seeing him as that yet either, just a guess

but whatever.

81. Yeah, a BIT overwhelmed...
...by a group of peaceful protesters who aren't bothering them at all.
Why? Cuz they have to slow down to make sure they don't run anyone over when they pass by? Cuz they have to wrestle with their own consciences about the meaning of this horrifying Armageddon war his 'good neighbor' President Evil's got us into?
Wow... tough row to hoe. Too much to ask that they mind their own goddamn business if they disagree with this lawful protest, huh?
Here's an idea: I suggest they stay inside and masturbate til' it's all over...
And that goes for anyone else who can't handle these simple, very obvious and straightforward legal issues about who can or cannot do what on PUBLIC land!
Yeah... whatever...
And btw, I don't think you're a BAD guy... like so many other Americans out there, you are neither good nor bad in my eyes; in fact, you're so lukewarm it's hard to tell you're even there.
I'm mad at the extras from Deliverance shooting off their guns and mouths, and no one taking them to account on it.
YOU'RE not even on the radar screen, man.

is going to be a hell of a lot closer to resolving this, than you. so luke warm may be your assessment, i couldn't disagree with you more. that person will be productive toward peace, while your way will encourage battle, and end up getting cindy and the whole group kicked out. but keep thinking it has to be one way, your way.......i dont think it will be welcomed at the protest, encouraging enemies of the neighbors. i dont think that is who cindy is.

we will have to see as this situation evolves.

95. Threatening Peaceful Protesters With Guns Is Not Empathetic!
You are just plain wrong.

This man deserves to be called out as the intollerant gun nut that he is. He has created this discussion not us. I didn't even know his name this morning.

Your endless defense here and our past exchanges make it quite clear to me that you are not in this with us. If you were you would be in the slightest bit concerned for the honest and decent people this man is trying to intimidate into stopping a perfectly lawful protest.

Frankly these posts make me :puke: .

You better get down there soon to do some sleeping under the hail of "Redneck" bullets that he has called for or shut the hell up. Because you are full of shit.

I smell what you are cooking. :spank:

I am done with you and this line of bullshit gun nut apologist crap.

Anyone that defends a guy that tries to end a peaceful protest with gun threats is full of shit. He is a potential danger and should be dealt with by the police.

He is threatening peaceful and lawful protesters with guns and calling on others to join him. That is all I have to say to nullify any apologist crap you choose to post.

Yes, not with us. With him apparently...

106. That's Bullshit. Nobody is on the side of him advocating shooting
people. He'll be arrested if that actually happens. You think ANY of the cops down there want to see a major fiasco happen right on the doorstep of Bush? More publicity, albeit negative? No way.

But I agree with Seabeyond that if you can't muster up a little bit of empathy for a guy who is NOT A BUSH LOVER but doesn't enjoy everyone parked outside his house and want to stir it up some more, you are PART OF THE PROBLEM.

That is not a position I empathize with. Period.

He better get his own behavior in check. Those of us that are pissed off by this are not the ones waving guns around.

That is the problem here.

91. Doubt it's a Secret Service issue -
- as I would imagine that there are acres and acres between the two neighbors. Would think he's had guns and has used them long since GWB moved into town. Logistically doubt that he's a threat so the USSS wouldn't be involved.

If anything, it sounds like a local police/sheriff issue. And, as long as he's on his own property and not breaking any laws, it's pretty much a non-issue.

119. Inciting people to riot w/deadly weapons in NOT a non-issue.
Since bush & co have driven past Camp Casey at least twice, and may do so again, and even though bush's land vehicles are probably better armored than any vehicle in Iraq, I would think that the Secret Service might want to put the kibosh on this gun nut's 'invitation'.

This is mainly interesting for the obvious incitement that is not in the CNN peice (Either not repeated or edited out. Hard eto say which).

Defenders of this behavior most likely have another home they should return to. They have done their work for the day.

and your point - it is well-taken. I have family JUST LIKE THIS GUY, but a bit further West in Texas. The REAL ranchers in my family, in New Mexico, would NOT act like this. I think Generic Other suggested an olive branch and a jar of honey from Cindy (or someone - how about a group of grannies? :) ) and I emphatically agree!

Peaceful protest is the only answer. An olive branch, a jar of honey, and an invitation to JOIN would be better IMHO.

The other day I was rude to another DUer (really great guy, but we disagreed and I hadn't slept for 48 hrs - my bad x( ) I hope we can cool off and return with hearts and minds unified.

If you have not listened to this audio, you better not be making excuses for this asshat. He is a beligerent prick that threatens peaceful and law abiding protesters with guns.

He is apparently unable to espress himself either sober or with out using fire arms.

He makes it clear that this type of behavior will continue if the protesters do not leave and invited "every redneck" in the state to join him in using guns to intimidate these people.

Anyone that is making excuses for that is just plain wrong.

Its about getting someone to PUT DOWN THIER FUCKING GUN.

All you are seeing is his anger and it is amping up yours. Anger and feeling you are the only one who is right is what the neocons and freepers are all about. Its what we can't stand about them....yet here you are saying the same BS.

Get a grip. There is a lot more at stake here than choosing sides or being "right".I am not apologizinf for this huy...I want us to get past this crap and have something positive come from it.

We all want the same thing...Cindy & everyone there...both sides of the fence to be safe and OK and come out of this with a little better understanding of other human beings and thier lives and what we have to gain & lose than before this happened.
