Angry widow calls for new 9/11 panel

By PAUL DE LA GARZA, Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - With details emerging Thursday that the Sept. 11 commission omitted crucial information from its final report last year, a group of 9/11 widows called for creation of a new independent panel.

"I'm very disturbed, and I want to get some answers," said Kristen Breitweiser, whose husband, Ronald, died in the World Trade Center. "I want to know what the truth is."

Her organization, the September 11th Advocates, or the Jersey Girls, was instrumental in pushing for creation of the Sept. 11 commission.

On Thursday, the now-disbanded commission became embroiled in controversy, after acknowledging it omitted crucial information about ringleader Mohammed Atta in its final report last summer. Former commission members planned to issue a "comprehensive statement" Thursday afternoon addressing the latest developments but they balked, saying they were still reviewing documents.

(snip)

U.S. Rep. Curt Weldon has generated headlines because he has lashed out at the Pentagon and the commission over what he perceives as a missed opportunity to foil the Sept. 11 plot.

Weldon says that intelligence sources shared the information about Able Danger and Atta with the commission but that it did not make it into the report.

(snip)

Early in the week, Al Felzenberg, who had been the commission's chief spokesman, said the panel was unaware of intelligence specifically naming Atta. But he said subsequent information provided Wednesday confirmed that the commission had been aware of the intelligence.

It did not make it into the final report because the information was not consistent with what the commission knew about Atta's whereabouts before the attacks, he said.

(snip)

Citing the latest revelations, Breitweiser, the Sept. 11 widow, called the findings of the Sept. 11 commission "an utterly hollow report."

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

1. If this administration thinks they've got a problem with Cindy,
just wait until the 911 widows wake up to the complete falsehood of the 911 report.

7. Are you kidding? They knew it was a whitewash from Day One.
They are VERY knowledgable and must believe in LIHOP at minimum.

8. Perhaps the time is ripe for them to stage a 'Cindy Sheehan" type event...
to draw attention to the whitewash. So many question, so few answers these days.

They'd get more support, I think, if they staged it at ground zero in NYC. There's an awful lot of New Yorkers who'd stand with them.

2. The excuse was that Atta's whereabouts were in question
"Weldon says that intelligence sources shared the information about Able Danger and Atta with the commission but that it did not make it into the report."

The commission is claiming that there were doubts about where Atta was. Either in the US on on that cryptic mission to Czechoslovakia.

No one says why this guy kept getting approval to reenter the US however.

They were making me proud before I heard of Cindy Sheehan. They have been quite a formidable force also. I expect to hear more from them and they deserve our support big time!

4. 'bout time...the hearings were a joke from the get go. Witnesses
contradicting each other, nonsensical answers with no follow up questions, witnesses NOT called...guy who shredded the air traffic controllers tapes, controllers not called, engineers who were bullshit that the beams were destroyed also not called, Rummy playing medic during the attack and on and on and on.....the fix was in from the start and I hope the Jersey girls (as much as I respect them) will get real.

9. Not a bad idea. At least let them be members of the new Commission.
Let it be a independent, citizen/community based Commission, instead of a politically based one.

to their questions--er...non-responses I should say.

Looks like most of the questions were ignored.

18. This is another woman who has not been afraid to take on this admin!
It's amazing how they are both doing this for the unnecessary loss of a loved one.

After watching Cindy, I have a feeling Kristen may become more forceful. I'm a huge fan of hers and this is a very smart, articulate woman.

Poor bushy - pretty soon he's going to have nowhere to hide!

Cindy on the westcoast, Kristen on the east coast, the truckers in Florida. lol!

22. Check out Cynthia McKinney's 9/11 hearing on C-SPAN

34. Kristen Breitweiser is one of my heroes
She and the Jersey Girls will get answers. They're tenacious and do not give up.

I liked the poster's comment about "Cindy Sheehan on the West Coast, Kristen on the East Coast, and the truckers in Florida." Somehow, I'm thinking that it's going to be a long month of August for *.

Go Kristen, go Cindy, and I hope they'll both let us know if there's anything we could do to help them.

Julie
