Something i've notice in the last couple months...
and weeks in particular,

the debate on iraq has shifted subtly, but very importantly, from leave iraq vs stay the course, to now...how are we going to leave.

conversations i've had, a quick withdrawl...iraqi's yer on yer own

phased withdrawal, leaving in incremental stages tied to events tied to dates.

and..gasp, even negotiate with the terra'ists

i'm increasingly seeing a 2006 midterm election where incumbant rethugs are going to suffer, based on the convergence of gas shock, iraq war weariness, bush fatigue, investigations and
indictments across the GOP...

ah imagine if chairman dean managed to recruit dozens of young progressives perhaps in the hackett mold and ran on anti-bush and anti-war platforms, ah the possibilites after that.

i think bushy's stubborness and his admins dishonesty is going to get him into trouble and other rethugs around him causing moderates to break away and distance themselves...ah imagine the possibilites after that.

1. Stop it...
I am peeing my pants. Just kidding, ah the possibilities. Course it could take 10 years to just get the country back in working order, and you know that would be "hard work". Bring it on.

2. more likely to take 1000 years to get the world back to working order
The mishandling of oil's finite supply has been so bad the crises it's incurred are going to shatter civilization, and possibly destroy all macroscopic life on earth if global warming has truly reached "runaway" proportions (recall that a temperature increase of 6C is suspected to have caused the Permian-Triassic extinction, and 10C is considered sufficient to break down the fundamental chemical processes necessary for aerobic life). The unpreparedness takes the form of being caught with useless, unfuelable vehicles, and the lack of a means to even revert to pre-industrial bases for agriculture, transportation, or manufacturing (e.g. there aren't enough horses or coal-fueled vehicles).

The fundies are going to be sorely disappointed when they discover what's coming is not Armageddon or the Rapture, but a really lousy reversion to death squad -backed military dictatorships worldwide (including the US) and sub-Saharan Africa-like famine etc. conditions along with them.

3. Interesting post.
Yes, I agree that the swing now is from "winning" the war to how soon (as the Repukes like to say) "turning the country over" to the now new and wonderful government we imposed on them.

I have a feeling, a strong one, that this thing is going to end like Viet Nam.

We will have so much distention in the US, there will be uncountable deaths of our troops, and an apparent no-win option, that's when we will withdraw.

Much like that image of the chopper lifting off the embassy in Saigon.

This is how it will end. Shamefully.

...And you know what? It's not that the troops should be shamed. It's the assholes who sent them there.

I really think we will lose more troops with the withdrawl. It'll be a bloodbath. (I pray not, but I think it's going to happen.)
