1. I will say the words "Tienanmen Square"
And you will awake enlightened and refreshed as I snap my fingers....

2. Um, I know that. There was some discussion here at DU that
resulted in gatorboy's volunteering to take the concept of "Cindy as the Tiananmen Square guy" and make a cartoon out of it.

This is the thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4319162&mesg_id=4319162

I'm just wondering, given the fact that so gatorboy's brilliant cartoon got sent all over the place right away, that in the three days following, the concept got out there...?

4. The fellow stopping the tanks was dead 3 days later - Cindy already has

done better.

Then again the "dead 3 days later" was fed to US media by US Gov types - so who knows.

All I know is that Cindy is a brave lady. And that gatorboy's cartoon was spot on.

6. That's one of those ideas
that's naturally going to occur to thoughtful people, I think...

And I suspect that if the professional cartoonist had seen it, he would have tried to think of another idea...

7. I don't think there was any plagiarism involved
The parallels between the two events are pretty evident. We thought of it here. I don't see any reason the same parallels weren't thought of elsewhere.

That said, I think I prefer gatorboy's version.

And that said, I think they both got it a little wrong. If President Pencildick and Ironheart were really driving that tank, they would have just run over her.

12. Yes, indeed. Another example of more than one person having the
same idea at the same tme.

That's why I don't think it's plagiarism, just coincidence.

5. I don't think we can claim particular influence on this one...
...the Tiananmen Square association might easily have occurred to many people simultaneously. One woman standing against a government; one man standing against the tanks; not a big leap to make.

A case of zeitgeist, if you will.

10. I think you're right. When you're caught up in the excitement of an idea,
you tend not to think about the fact that the same idea could have occurred to someone else.

8. One note: I think Gatorboy's cartoon is better.
Didn't even need a name on her back. Luckovich's Cindy is more generic looking to me.

9. Gatorboy didn't need a name on Cindy's back
The MSM is read by more than just liberals--presumably all of whom know about Cindy.

Given that, however, I like Gatorboy's art better. It's crisper. And that expression on Cheney's face!
