Sirius satellite radio has replace 144, AAR, with Korean programming
at least that is what is on right now

I guess the rumors that they were going to add a second progressive/liberal station didn't pan out

I will contact them to confirm it, but if that is the case I will be saying goodbye to Sirius

Won't go with XM until they have uninterrupted coverage of AAR

For me they bring nothing to the table unless they broadcast the full AAR schedule

Sirius just lost me by filling 144 with Korean talk. No offense but what are they thinking?

103. Randi is NOT DELAYED... and has NEVER BEEN DELAYED.
They run the last 2 hours LIVE and have done so since they started running the last 2 hours.

Way back in the beginning, they only had 1 hour of Randi, the last hour AND IT WAS RUN LIVE.

RANDI'S TWO HOURS ARE LIVE. PERIOD.

He's not an interruption, He's the greatest Liberal ever broadcasted.

He should be on 24 Hours a day.

Goodbye, Al! Goodbye, Randi! Goodbye, Malloy! Goodbye, AAR losers!

All Alan, All the time!!!

They could call it......Fox News!!!!

I have sent letters to XM stating the same. No XM for me until it's truly Air America Radio.

But he's not that good either.

XM should have been contractually obligated to carry the unmolested AAR schedule. AAR screwed up big time.

(and no, I'm not kidding....)

Here's a new tiblet...

If my sources are correct, XM is DROPPING "Playboy Radio" as of 9/1. It's using the bandwidth of 1.5 normal channels.

Ponder.

18. Sat Radio 101
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 01:49 PM by Rosco T.
Might as well explain it to everyone...

Both service (Sirius and XM) have a limited amount of BANDWIDTH to broadcast their signals, just like the 'normal' TV band has a certain amount of bandwidth to broadcast in. TV slices that up into a fixed number of CHANNELS (2-13 VHF, 13-63 UHF) with each given a certain range of the frequencies to stick their channels.

The SAT services however can dynamically adjust the amount of bandwidth they give each CHANNEL within their allocated frequencies. A MUSIC channel will take up more than a TALK channel. Generally (not precisely, but a good rule of thumb) you can figure that a MUSIC will have DOUBLE the bandwidth of a TALK channel, that can vary of course.

The MORE BANDWIDTH you give a channel, the CLEARER and more DEPTH you will have, the LESS and the more 'restricted' in range the sound would have. On XM the real-time traffic/weather channels each has about 1/5-1/6 (IIRC) the bandwidth of a normal TALK channel. They sound rather compressed, tinny and mono.. then again, all you are listening to is someone reading the traffic/weather. The MLB/ACC/PAC10 channels are about 2/3 the normal talk channel, still clear, but they are (effectively) mono.

Playboy was/is a 'premium' channel that had a significent amount of musical guests, so they got a little more.

As for Schultz/Colmes... I can't make a DEFINATIVE statement, but some points to consider:

- it's well known that Schultz HATES being associated with AAR (and the way he pot shots at Randi are also well known).

- Schultz want's all three hours of his show carried, not just 2 (just like Randi).

- Schultz is also wanting to expand his show to FOUR hours rather soon.

- Colmes isn't to fond of being on AAR either (since he will throw a smackdown their way)

There are things in the works to move Shcultz/Colmes off the channel, but there are these pesky things called CONTRACTS. Schultz & Colmes contracts PRE-DATE the start of AAR (in any form) on XM and won't be up for a bit. Once the Renewal comes up, from what I hear, you will see Schultz on a different channel, possibly with Stephanie joining him and some others. Colmes I don't know. Take a look a the Sirius Left channel and see who's cut/up, delayed, etc.

As far as the existing XM AAR sched goes, it's better than 99% of the OTA affiliates (Rachel, Morning Sedition and ALL of the weekend shows). The ONLY modifications are the 1st 2 hours of Randi replaced by Schultz and Malloy tape-delayed till after Colmes. If you listen to XM, you'll hear Malloy doing on-air XM Promos, so he can't be TOO upset.

ANOTHER DATA POINT. Up until FRIDAY, the 'inhouse' XM Promos for the AAR channel would be in several 'blocks', touting (for instance) Rachel Maddow, Morning Sedition and Al Franken, or the Schultz, Randi, Malloy pairing (they never mentioned Colmes except in seperate ads).

As of Friday, I think they have dropped all those promos (I haven't heard one, but I could have missed it) and now have a 'patriotic theme music' ad for Air America, touting the entire lineup with NO mention of Schultz/Colmes. Take that for what it's worth.

My 'ears' in the business tell me that they wanted to get this done already, but an 'obstacle in the contracts' have prevented it, sounds like someone dosen't want to do anything to give AAR a break. again, take that for what it's worth.

It. Will. Change.

Right now there are some SMOKING deals out there for the Roady2 Packages since they are clearing stock for the RoadyXT and XM Xpress (read about/see them here - http://www.xm411.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=17322&sid=9f9bea5194c67b28918dc883350b7395 and here http://www.xm411.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=17324 ) so if you're even remotely interested, now is a good time to snag one.

There is also an 'undocumented' deal around for service. If you call in when you activate (or afterward if you get a stubborn CSR), mention you got a flyer, heard about the 'half-price' deal for a year service... viola... 1 year service for $77. If you get an un-cooperative CSR when you activate, just go month-to-month and try again later..

- you try to inform
- try to help (pass along good deals)

and you get vilified by someone with a axe to grind. Hell, I could tell you right now where to get a Roady2 Car Setup for $5 (after $45 rebate). I already mentioned the 1/2 price for a year deal that you can request. If you wanted an 'permanent' in-home tuner, there's the Polk Audio, Pioneer and others that have XM built in.. and a helluva lot of 'normal' radios were announced in the last week that are 'XM ready' all you have to do it plug in an XM antenna and there you go.. XM also has a pot full of their XM Direct units that will let you add it to factory head-units in the cars, INCLUDING some that are 'Sirius Ready'...

you'll never find a 'referral link' and anything I post, and never tell anyone to 'mention my name'.. but I'm still a shill and only in it for the money to some...

1) What kind of content would they put on Playboy radio? Do they play phone-sex or something?

2) Richard Simmons? The exercise guy? Does he have a radio exercise show or has he become a pundit?

3) How many people here feel betrayed that Jerry Doyle can spend five years making Babylon 5 and still learn nothing of the values and moral lessons the show taught? In other words, the real "Michael Garibaldi," conservative talkshow host, has joined Nightwatch and The Ministry of Peace. I say, feed Jerry Doyle to the Pak'ma'ra!

I mean it's one thing to say that you read the magazine for the articles, but get serious.... what is there to listen to in Playboy??

Now what's this about Richard Simmons being on a "Patriot" channel?? Did he just get deprogrammed by Exodus Ministries or something?

Seriously though, XM needs to get real and dump Schultz and Colmes. Though at least Colmes shows slightly more spine on the radio than he does on FAUX. Not enough to preempt the Mike Malloy show though. Not even close.

- Termination of service prior to the end of a prepaid subscription or committed subscription period will result in a $75 cancellation fee. Fee does not apply for monthly plans.

I've said more than once that I'v no connection to either Sirus (learn to spell will ya) or XM, get no money from them or even own any stock..

What I have said is that I spent 20 years in the broadcasting/recording business and I still have 'ears' in the business that I can talk to. Nothing that I can put on the record or attribute to any one person, but I can listen.

Go away. I have iTunes, get everything we're talking about on podcast now FOR FREE!, and you can shove all satellite radio, both sevices broadside. After 3 months, that "different songs" start repeating themselves just as bad as any terrestrial station does. Why pay for more "Don't Fear the Reaper" or "Stairway to Heaven"?

I care because I need my $133 back...which I got. No $75 deactivation fee. Not even a mantion of it. Take that back and place it in your "FACT LOG" for future reference.

EDIT: They gave me my entire $160 back. Waived August.

108. Sorry about that. I was just having fun with him.
He might not be on commission, but if he's not a "paid advertiser" in the same vein as those paid Sony "critics" giving Sony's movies rave reviews, then he's certainly not being paid well enough to evangelize for Delphi or XM or whoever.

I used to belong to a home theater message board, and we'd see these company reps, posing as "Joe Consumer" all the time, claiming that their new amp, dvd player, Plasma TV, etc. was the absolute best on the market in it's class. Most of us saw right through them, because all their talking points were the same...

"I'm just talking the reported specs, and giving facts."
"This is just how I see it. You might disagree."
"Some might accuse me of being a Cambridge Soundworks/Mitsubishi/Pioneer, yada, yada, yada, salesman, but I'm just interested in the truth."

It's called "Targeted advertising", and has been around for a few years, which is why he's now on a Democratic/liberal/progressive board touting the marriage of AAR and XM.

Make sure the antenna connector is tight. I had a loose connection there, but after adjusting the little metal wings to tighten the connection, the signal has been rock solid.

The XM sats are stationary but the Sirius ones move (I'm sure someone can post the graphic showing this if you really want to see it). Originally, I had an antenna sticking out of the west side of my house. No good, and I'm sure the trees didn't help.

Now, I have my house antenna looking up through a skylight. No problems.

slightly west, but I would imagine if you could get your antenna to point straight up and not be blocked by tall buildings to your immediate west, that would be ideal.

64. To be fair....
two satellites are on at all times. They turn off and on at the equator.

Also, the XM birds are lower in the sky than the Sirius (and it is "Sirius" btw) birds. Thus, some XM subscribers have more trouble with objects (e.g. buildings) blocking their line-of-sight.

I know people that are in the northern part of buildings with ZERO southern exposure and get good signal on the repeaters (and the pisses off the NAB something fierce). And no, XM dosen't publish a map of the repeaters.. there is a magic key sequence you can push on most of the XM Recievers to show you the ground repeater strength.

And they don't publish the maps either. Living in Dallas, I know I don't have any problem with reception regardless of some heavy tree canopy coverage around the house.

Sirius also has readouts on its PNPs that show satellite vs. ground repeater strength.

The Word Network delivers 15,000 protest letters to SIRIUS

The Reverend Jesse Jackson and executives from The Word Network hand-delivered over 15,000 protest letters this week to Sirius Satellite Radio, arguing their decision to end Word Network broadcasts when the current contract expires on September 2nd.

Jesse Jackson is currently the host of The Word Network’s Rainbow Push with Jesse Jackson which broadcasts African-American ministries, gospel music and religious family programming.

Lewis Gibbs, vice president of operations for The Word Network, asked, “If Sirius can make room for the values Howard Stern represents, we’d also like them to make room for the values we represent.”

And I bet you it will get worse.

Don't forget, XM Radio actually carries Dr. James "I-hate-fags-but-love-masturbating" Dobson.

I think XM's ultimate goal is to stifle AAR and limit-- eventually block-- their access to satellite radio.

the one saving grace for AAR is they are getting OTA broadcasts

The "hate" radio is another reason I am NOT running to XM right now also, but the main reason is that they break up AAR, and delay broadcast it

What was Sirius thinking replacing 144 with Korean talk?

Liberals/progressives are really getting the short end of the stick

Since they are NOT exclusive to Sirus (check their web page, they are on some OTA stations also) makes me wonder if they might take a weekend gig at AAR (instead of some of the endless 'Best of's.. or maybe....

Now that I cancelled my Sirius subscription today, I am sitting on the sidelines waiting to see which one will present the best progressive content.

Incidently, I received a pro-rated refund from Sirius on my remaining subscription, and no termination fee

114. I hope you are right, but I sure got a different impression
when I called Sirius today. I cancelled Sirius today, because they don't offer enough progressive content for me, and I am NOT jumping to XM because they don't offer the complete uninterrupted AAR programming. My decision will be made by the following:

1. If XM comes through with uninterrupted AAR stream, they will have my business

2. If Sirius comes through with two progressive/liberal channels, with one giving the full content of Thom Hartman and Stephanie Miller, they will get my business

Who will be first?

Don't get me wrong, I hope you are right, but right now I am just going to wait it out to see who gets the most liberal/progressive content

Incidently, I have stock in SIRI which I will hold at least until Stern comes aboard, but that is a pure play that Stern will attrack at least 3 million new subs

110. I'm with you, Xultar.
And I won't go with XM until they have uninterrupted coverage of AAR.

I'll give Sirius a few more weeks.

116. This may not be the thing, but I got 2 way satellite at work, and now I
can stream everyone. It is so great. If you can get cable or DSL, go for it. I couldn't, so 2 way is the compromise. I sit at my cubicle and listen all day to what I want to hear.
