Killen Free On Bond
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 01:12 PM by ls317
PHILADELPHIA, Miss. - Edgar Ray Killen was released from a Mississippi jail Friday after posting $600,000 bond while he appeals his manslaughter convictions in the 1964 killings of three civil rights workers.

The 80-year-old one-time Ku Klux Klansman, wearing street clothes, sandals and a felt cowboy hat, appeared to be in good spirits but refused to answer questions as he was taken from the Neshoba County Jail in a wheelchair. He was able to move himself from the wheelchair to the front seat of a family car.

2. This reminds me of John Gresham's "A Time to Kill"

When it looked like the jury was going to convict the black man who avenged the brutal attack and rape of his black daughter in the deep south...the attorney in his closing argument made the jury re-live the crime.
Then...he said (after talking of untold horror and brutality)--"Imagine that this little girl was white".
It made the difference.
In this case it is the same.
Can you imagine them letting a black man out after he was convicted of these horrific murders?
Somehow I don't think so. It is ONLY because this is a white KKK'er who loves God and lives in the South.
IMHO, the judge threw out what a jury of this racists peers believed, and judged him, more than likely, as he would himself.
And a cold blooded racist killer walks the street.

4. i doubt he'll ever be jailed again
considering his age, his health, and his ability to finance endless "appeals"

i presume ebbers is also out on appeal

it angers me that the sentencing is loud & noisy on cnn but they quietly let these bad guys out the back door & all you hear is <crickets>

6. Silly me?
I always thought that, as soon as you were convicted and sentenced, you go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass GO and definitely do not collect $200. Isn't the whole idea of "appeals" that they get filed while you're locked away in a nice safe prison?

8. this is not true for rich people
the propertied class is released on bail even after conviction, prior to appeal, because they can put up the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars required as bond

we have a two tier system

the idea of "all men created equal" is so over

yes, i'm bitter
