I'm going to San Francisco tomorrow for a vacation
I decided to spend my $ on blue areas.

I've signed up for a few tours but none do Lombard Street because it's too steep and narrow for tour buses.

Will the taxis take me there? Thanks to those of you who know.

17. Indeed. The Powell-Hyde line stops right at the top of the crooked part.
Enjoy one of the worthwhile places on the mainland!

3. I don't know about taxis but I do have a good restaurant suggestion
There is a place near the financial district called Eddie Rickenbachers (sp?) It's sort of a dumpy hole in the wall bar type of a place but the food is excellent and very cheap for what you are getting (by cheap I mean cheap for San Francisco)I went to several expensive places when I was in SF and I liked the aforementioned the best.

5. Hyde St. cable car
Runs from downtown, to the top of Lombard, to the wharf. I think it still costs $5. Taxis will take you there.

Please, for the sake of all that's holy, don't take the tour in the antique fire engine where the woman on the mike sings showtunes. There is no reason to encourage or support that kind of behavior.

6. Yeah, a cab will take you. But when you've done Lombard, ...
have the cabbie take you to Potrero Hill, to 23rd St. and Vermont, then go down a crookeder street and come out behind S.F. General Hospital. Or while you're still up the hill, go have lunch or dinner at Goat Hill Pizza.

7. The cable care DOES go by Lombard St...
and if you like italian food, go to North Beach and take your pick. Also, think about taking Market Street up the hill onto Portola Dr., gorgeous views of the city and the area.

11. If you get a chance i would recommend eating at McCormick & Kuletos
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 08:41 PM by chimpsrsmarter
seafood at Ghiradelli Square, it's on Beach street, a touch pricey but well worth it. If you go between lunch and dinner hours you will get a great table.

15. Yes, but parking is a PITA
Especially in Russian Hill and North Beach.

A city map and the bus is easier (MHO)

13. The cable car or even MUNI
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 08:43 PM by indie_voter
MUNI operates the cable car and the regular buses. The bus costs $1.25 until Sept. 1, when it will cost $1.50.

The cable car will drop you off at the top of Lombard street, the bus (45) will drop you a couple blocks away.

You can buy a day pass, passport, etc if you want to explore public transportation.

Here is the site with more information (fees are valid only to September 1st when everything increases)

http://www.sfmuni.org/cms/mms/fares/fareinfo.htm#passports

You can also download route info, maps, etc.

Have fun!

21. What are you talking about kestrel? We're planning on going
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 09:49 PM by SCRUBDASHRUB
in mid-Sept. I don't want to live my life in fear; however, we haven't flown since August 2001, and I'm pretty nervous (I was nervous flying before 9/11).

22. My little neice who I often take travelling
was shook up after 9/11. She was 5. She asked if that meant we couldn't travel anymore. She loves airplanes. I said we'll travel anytime, anywhere we want to as long as we could afford it. I also told her we could live as cluckers and stay home, or travel as we choose. At 5 years old she chose not to live as a "clucker".
