Wild fires...sharks...west nile virus--did they all go away?
For the past five years at least, the news have been filled with stories about wild fires in the summer. Yet, this is one of the hottest driest summers ever and not a peep about fires--or maybe I haven't heard about them because I don't watch the news anymore.

It just seems kind of strange that these perils and others have pretty much disappeared.

1. AFAIK
There's some wildfires in Washington State that are pretty bad. Shark attacks? None down here. Hot dry weather=no mosquitos=no WNV. We have had some reports of equine encephalitis though

2. Chicago is currently spraying its neighborhoods for West Nile Virus

It's just not something officials want to talk about...much like that anthrax from Fort Detrick.

5. National guard is in Irag
We won't see too many of them fighting fires this summer. Thats probably why they are not reporting it. Also, I've had 5 dead birds at my home in the last week. So far they are not spraying. Called the state and they told me to wrap them in two plastic bags and throw them in the garbage. They have so many calls they can't handle all of them. I'm in Stockton, CA. They are spraying north and south of us but not here yet.

6. A little quiet.
N. Idaho had ten or eleven major fires the last time I looked. Nationwide a good place to scope it out is: http://www.nifc.gov/
From now through sep/october can get dicey. Lots of pine beetle damage.
Just have to wait and see.
