You do realize that the potential for violence
is very high at this point. These people (RW/Freeps) are being pushed to their breaking point and it will get worse before it gets better. I urge everyone to be on their toes and with a tight rein on their tempers. The end of the tunnel is in sight but there's a huge pothole in the ground right here. Please; EVERYONE be careful and pick your fights according to where you can make the most impact with the least damage. Some conflict is to be expected but we need to show them how mature adults can interact. BE the kind of person you wish to see. I understand you ranting here to DU family to get your frustration out. Feel free to do so. Please please be careful out "there". We need all of you for the move foreward.....

12. If you do. Get some schooling in its use.
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 09:24 AM by benburch
Most good gun shops can tell you where to take a firearms safety class. You need to know how to safely load, unload, clean, and handle the piece. Also you need to develop the ability to hit a target at 25 and 50 feet. (Don't need to hit the center of the target; Anywhere on the paper is fine!)

13. I target shoot on my property with rifle - had a pistol for a while...
Thanks for the advice - anyone reading this should follow your advice if they are getting a weapon. I just want another pistol and a permit to carry - "be prepared" is a good motto.

14. When I lived in San Diego, I got a membership at the police range...
This was during the late 1970s; I had just purchased a S&W .357 and wanted a place to target shoot. I bought a one-year membership at the police range and went there to practice.

I encourage anyone who is thinking about buying a gun to check into a shooting range for membership, particularly if you don't live in a rural area. There are even private ones, like here in Kansas City (I've been thinking about joining it's range membership), so there might be one near you.

One thing about the police range, you couldn't use magnum loads, but since those tend to cost more, a .38 load was good enough for target practice. And you could purchase .38s from the range (you only had to return the brass).

19. and if children are to be around
Keep as many safety implementations as possible.

-trigger locks
-keep ammo and weopon in two seperate and locked places.
-don't keep it loaded...unless the situation is very dire (don't want to think about it.)

Kids (especially those hwo don't know gun safety)+ guns are a bad combination.

6. Sound advice. Recommended.
Anytime behavior modification goes on, the unwanted behaviors will tend to increase for a period of time. It is like the group is testing resolve about having change forced upon them.

Yep, the wingers will get pretty frustrated and most won't deal well with that. They have had 25 years of hate radio telling them they and their violent streaks are fine and liberals are pussies. It will take some of them a lot of hard lessons before they accept they have to act like civilized people and that they do not get to be the boss of us.

Pick your fights carefully. Show them rational thoughts and actions will win. If need be, correct them if they mistake you for a doormat. And be careful out there.

8. I carry mace.
Seriously. I took my bumper stickers off my car because I was tired of getting the finger with my kids in it.

I only wear anti-bush, anti-rethug tee shirts when doing errands and have been confronted more than once. Unfortunately for the freeps, I am articulate and intelligent, which is why I am a liberal.

I am growing more concerned, though about getting physically attacked when yet another one of them loses an argument with me.

11. Yes
That's been a fear of mine; that we haven't seen anything impressive from the neocons yet, because they haven't gotten desperate. Yet. When they do, what will they do? Whatever their crazy minds dream up, and these folks are card-carrying nuts.

It's just a theory. But a good one, because violence is one of their most favored tools. They will NOT hesitated to use violence on Americans. Why should they?

15. As for myself
I live smack dab in the center of a very red part of a very red state. Plenty of confederate flags on trucks and whatnot.

But to tell the truth, I've had a pretty good life. Three sons, 7 granddaughters, a life filled with pretty much anything a man could hope for. As for the future for me, I see little but a steady downhill slide in health. I doubt the future for me holds many good things or even surprises.

Thus, if some peckerhead wants to take out his frustrations, caused by his own ignorance, on me well why not. All that would gain him was a small cell and they do have capital punishment here.

As they do not care, nor do I for my own wellbeing. Their violence will not work against me. Actually, their violence helps the causes I care about. For then, any normal person will recognize these people for what they truly are. There is no way I can lose in this battle, unless I use violence back.

Keep it peaceful, thats the way to win this war.

Come on, bring it on. I won't fight back.

20. You are right. I had some seriously scary moments recently
that inspired me to change my bumper stickers. It was the guy who called me a 'stupid fucking cunt bitch' while less than a foot away that put me over the edge.

As a woman who is usually alone when in my car I was really sick of being called nasty names by freepers getting up in my face. Gas station parking lots mostly, and always when I was alone.

My 'Bush is a Punk-Ass Chump' sticker is gone, so is my 'How many lives per gallon?'

Replaced with "Pro-soldier, Pro-peace" and "Support the troops, Give them Healthcare"

It's not worth it. I'll take my chances with the riot police in DC next month, but I will not have my ass kicked by a misogynistic ignorant bastard at a gas station.

25.  Pity you didn't know who the mean guy was
You could sidle up to his SUV and put a sticker on it that says "I have a very small penis, so I drive a big car!"

He'd probably drive around for days before he noticed it, and think everyone laughing, honking and smiling at him on the highway was cheering on his Chimp stickers!

22. Chicago convention, Kent State
It was a way of life, and became very common. It UPSET people, though, on both sides, and it played a part in turning the tide.

I don't care for violence, but if it has to happen, I hope the perpetrators are the mindless bastards who support this Iraqi misadventure...and that the police step in quickly and professionally.

What is interesting about the police is that a lot of them want us out of Iraq. Police Departments are being DECIMATED by National Guard call-ups; they'd like to get back to business with a full staff.

All we are saying is give peace a chance........!

36. a strategy that has helped me over the years is to assume the role of
observer. remain a partcipant, in the conversation (or whatever), but not pick fights. it's more fun to learn about people. everyone wants to talk about themselves. and no one wants to pick a fight...after they've picked it. the older you get, the more acute your hindsight.

but, if you're like me, you want the dialog to have a chance. you want to talk to people. so just ask questions. say, "i don't know" when things get hot and ask another question. okay, so it's the socratic method and it's a little underhanded b/c eventually you will have everything you need to cream them...but in the meantime maybe you'll make a friend...or get too drunk to fight. whatever.
