I miss it terribly. Oregon is beautifull, but the people and it's politics suck. I feel like a strager in a strange land. I don't so much like the traffic.. Noooo, I do not miss that little reality of life at all. it's just hearing about all the roads that I have driven over so many times.

I head that way (199) every few months from Arcata to Eugene (heading east, Ashland is not bad.)

The Southern Oregon coastline is some the most spectacular coastline I've ever seen...and that includes in Ireland and Mexico (and Big Sur) S Oregon coast is wildly beautiful.

I have a place on tne corner of California and Divisadero and head down there every couple of months as well, most of my family still live in the city.

But very tough to beat the political atmosphere and beauty of Arcata (the ocean and the redwoods and the people of Humboldt County.)

However, SF is always my home.

Why I left? They ofered me a bail of cash for my house, and my job at Santa Cruz Metro was being threatened by budget cuts. I do miss it. Wow, now I am having beautiful memories of Sea bright beach, thanks.

the town's cutting back services due to lack of $$ (true of the whole country) but other than that, it's fine.

The weather's been great, the students are back in town, and all seems well.

Don't hold your breath on property prices, though. It's still insane. I bought my house 6 years ago this month, and it's appreciated over 50% in that time.

Two-bedroom/one-bath houses in this neighborhood are now over 500k. Just for fun, I went to an open house a few weeks for a small 3 bedroom/2-bath (and it was SMALL!) with an "ocean view" (you had to lean out the window) and it was listing for over a million. Crazy.

on edit: I'm bad at math :) My house has appreciated almost 75%

I can't complain. That and a little more is what they paid me to leave Santa Cruz. Came to Oregon because of the nature, great decent priced new homes, no sales tax etc.. You know the weather isn't bad at all, not like I had been lead to believe in California. I wish that it would rain more and I do hope that we get some snow this winter.

But it does lack culture and depth here. And people are not very friendly. Nobody says hi unless they're selling you something, and I live in a suburbian baby factory that is peaceful but boooooring.

Around here, 500k would get you a mansion on the hill with framed views of Mount Hood from every room.

I adore it here, but my bf and I have discussed the possibility of going elsewhere. I could sell my small cottage here and buy a beautiful house, say, in New Mexico on a lot of property and still have a lot in the bank.

It'd be tough, though. I really like it here. But the traffic, cost of living, stupid california politics, etc., does take its toll.

The traffic, cost of living, stupid local politics etc.. Yep, it was driving me nuts, especially the traffic. We spent a couple of years looking at homes on line at www.realtor.com , and we looked all over America and wound up coming to Northern Oregon.

We looked at New Mexico and Arizona but the scorpions gave us the willies. We decided that we wanted to be on the left coast. California and Washington was equally expensive so we decided on little ol' Oregon. We need all the liberal politics here that we can get.

If we drive these freepers to Idaho, I would be happy.
