From what I've heard (I have Dish so no current), Current is taking the idea of podcast/blogcasts and applying them to the commercial television media. No offense to Al Gore but the parts for our own, fresh-up-to the minute media are already out there, especially for internet people. Current is taking from one media where it makes more sense and putting it on television. (Here's an example-
http://audio.weblogs.com/)
Two main factors-People with digital cameras who can film events they want others to see, especially newsworthy ones. The film is made and it's immediately ready, on demand, for people to watch.
The second factor is RSS feeds to Podcasts, so that you can get the freshest podcasts of your choice when they are made and watch them at your leisure.
Going further with this with regard to grassroots. There is news going on in your area, in your local government, in your local community. You can film it, record it, put it on the internet and be your OWN NEWS, influencing or at least exposing your local community to ideas that may affect them in a way that national news can never do.
I'm not necessarily trying to dismiss Current. But it seems to me that the internet trumps Current by its immediacy, availability and applicability to topics that can be tailored of concern to people at a grassroots level.
