Unbelievable propaganda piece by Newsweek-Losing my civility in LTTEs
'I'm So Sorry'
In emotional private meetings with the families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, President Bush offers solace—and seeks some of his own.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8941525/site/newsweek/

A little taste:

President Bush was wearing "a huge smile," but his eyes were red and he looked drained by the time he got to the last widow, Crystal Owen, a third-grade schoolteacher who had lost her husband in Iraq. "Tell me about Mike," he said immediately. "I don't want my husband's death to be in vain," she told him. The president apologized repeatedly for her husband's death. When Owen began to cry, Bush grabbed her hands. "Don't worry, don't worry," he said, though his choking voice suggested that he had worries of his own. The president and the widow hugged. "It felt like he could have been my dad," Owen recalled to NEWSWEEK. "It was like we were old friends. It almost makes me sad. In a way, I wish he weren't the president, just so I could talk to him all the time."

My response:

Regarding the "I'm So Sorry" article

Wow.

Every time I think there's hope that the media will stop being right
wing shills and cover the steadily growing opposition to Bush and his
folly of a war, the more I get slapped in the face by just what a bunch
of corporate whores journalists and editors have really become.

The best you could do in covering Cindy Sheehan's vigil in Crawford was
a picture of a chair and a mention in a caption?

So Bush likes to have a little boo-hoo every now and then over the
deaths of American fallen soldiers? Even if I were to believe this is
true and not some staged episode for the cameras, one wonders why he
didn't think of the potential for American casualties BEFORE he decided
to perpetrate an unnecessary, unprovoked and miserable failure of a
war.

Fuck you, Newsweek, for this over-the-top propaganda piece of shit you
call reporting.

Sincerely,
XXXXX XXXXXX

5. I actually subscribed to that dismal rag some years ago, thinking
it would be less obnoxious than Time, which had become pretty bad. Unfortunately, I bought about 3 years of what turned out to be a steady decline into corporate whoredom and mindless youth-culture diversion that became virtually unreadable.

6. Er well...
while I am in full agreement with you on the subject, personally I would dispense with the harsh language "fuck you", "piece of shit". IMO it detracts from the intelligent discourse of the letter and allows an editor to reject publishing it as "too extreme". For what it's worth (not much, I know).

13. I don't expect them to publish it. My point is, I see right through it
and the fact that it is so transparent deserves a good cuss or two. This article is profane by what it represents - propaganda to prop up a figurehead who could care less about the damage he's wreaks upon America by his arrogant, short-sighted policies - propaganda is nothing but a big "fuck you" to the masses and this story is a bigger "fuck you" to Cindy Sheehan.

Anyway, I'm sure they'll get other LTTEs regarding the subject that WILL be more insightful and polite. Let them print those.

7. Still more jingoistic propaganda bullshit from the rag that employs...
Howard "I'm a whore and proud of it" Fineman. This part, especially, rings completely false: "The president apologized repeatedly for her husband's death." Bush has never apologized for anything. No fuckin' way he's gonna start now.

:grr:

12. I think that part rings true
but he says "I'm sorry" in the same way that you would if someone lost their husband, brother, father, sister, daughter, mother, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece, nephew in a car accident, or a tornado. The statement means "I am sorry for your terrible loss" not "I am sorry that I started the unnecessary war that lead to your terrible loss". In fact, the sentiment is hinted that we need to stay in Iraq so that the deaths will not have been in vain.

15. Good point. I didn't consider it from that angle.
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 03:33 PM by Rob H.
In fact, he actually played the "we need to stay in Iraq" card when discussing Cindy Sheehan. "We have to honor the sacrifices of the fallen by completing the mission." In my opinion it still doesn't make his apology any more sincere or less self-serving, though--he could've apologized just as easily without reporters and photographers tagging along.

9. what a horrible thought
to feel like Bush is your dad. If he was even 1/10th of the man my dad is he might be a halfway decent President.

I think people just get so over-awe by being able to talk with a huge celebrity like the President of the United States that they forget that this one is the Worst. President. Ever.

10. That article tells me one important thing
Of course, I KNEW it already, but it confirms it once and for all.

The man is as DUMB AS A DOORKNOB. When things do not work, YOU DO NOT KEEP DOING THEM.

He can look stricken, his little lip can tremble, he can be ashen, Laura can be devastated...but why keep it up? When things SUCK, you STOP!!

He's like a dunce banging his head against the wall, then crying because it hurts, and then doing it again!!!!

AAAAAGH!!! STOOOOOOOOOPID!!!!!
