Viewmgr..exe: Trojan Horse and/or data miner?
I just installed 2005 Norton Internet Security (NIS) and the first thing that happened was that an outbound connection was attempted through viewmgr.exe. NIS said that it was a low level concern and that it recommended that viewmgr.exe always have this permission. A few minutes after allowing it, I looked down and noticed that my NIS had been disabled.

I wondered if by allowing viewmgr.exe to have access to the internet, did I release a Trojan Horse that can shut down my NIS?

1. ViewMgr.exe
ViewMgr.exe (viewmgr.exe) is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Similar to Flash, Acrobat, Windows, Quicktime, etc., Viewpoint posts updates to its servers and occasionally the Viewpoint Media Player will check to make sure that it's the latest version. If you'd rather not allow the player to check for updates, you can disable this in your Viewpoint Manager Control Panel which can be found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting "Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager" -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. At no time does Viewpoint Media Player or the Viewpoint Manager collect ANY personal data about you or your usage patterns, nor does it install third-party software or access information on your hard drive. We invite you to read Viewpoint’s stance against spyware (https://www.viewpoint.com/pub/privacy_commitment.html).

4. Part of my job ....
the software I work with stops some processes and services before starting and restarting after - it's so students in schools can take online tests without cheating.

Stopping can sometimes crash the system, so we have to look them up to determine if it's necessary, spyware, etc. I goto that site all the time - great resource.

2. viewmgr.exe
is a process for the Viewpoint Media Player, which is borderline spyware. I suggest uninstalling, however I don't think it is a trojan installer.
