2. CNN got hit with a worm and are now going overboard
The reason they got hit with a womr is they use old unpatched operating systems, which is idiotic.

The patch just came out last week and they probably have thousands of servers to protect.

16. If their network architecture is done correctly
they could have isolated it easily.

Plus, the biggest spreader is the workstations and they should have been patched automatically upon release of the update.

32. So do I.
A company the size of CNN should be protected. They should invest in that kind of protection, but it's very expensive and not always easy to pull off. Patching a couple servers is no big deal, but it's much more difficult when you have many servers running many apps that need 24\7 uptime. Of course, an outage like this is extremely embarrassing for the reasons you mentioned.

34. The cost of a single outage like this outweighs the cost of implementation
of proper measures.

Somebody in CNN IT needs to be better at expressing ROI, but then again, preventative measures generally only get the attention of executives after an event of this nature.

17. MS runs hotmail on Unix servers...
After being forced to try a trial run of Hotmail served on NT servers, they were unable to make it work at the same efficiency, so they never implemented the switchover from unix to PC's running NT. This may have changed now, but I kinda doubt it. Unix OS's are built for scaling and serving gigglebytes(tm) of data efficiently. NT while it can be configured lean & mean generally it is installed with default configuration, and often with hackable services running.

Jaysus...I live in a Ludlum novel....there's such a disconnect. Did I see what I saw on CNN which delayed Dobbs show with CNN "techies" blathering on about Germany and Japan being hacked and Tech Blogger info on forever?

Did I have a "brain lapse" a "synapse" and this NEVER happened. Was Bliztzer on "OVERTIME" announcing "TERRA WORM THREAT?"

35. Please don't say that, CNN is all hype
Here is the latest report from the Internet Storm Center

"CNN Worm; Feedback from Microsoft; Reader Mailbag; Johannes Redux; Apple Security Patches

CNN Worm

CNN is heavily covering an outbreak of a worm in its own network. They are reporting that ABCNews and NYTimes are hit as well. All statements so far make this look like a Zotob variant, even though this variant appears to reboot the system. (Zotob.d ?).

Likely this is an isolated event, which became newsworthy because CNN got infected. We do not see any new threats at this point. Zotob keeps mutating and finding new victims. As seen with prior TCP worms, it is reaching its peak around 3 days after the outbreak.

Speculating: The fact that CNN, ABC and the NYTimes got it may be as simple as reporters from these organizations visiting the same event and connecting to an infected network. While a firewall may have protected their office network up to now, these infected laptops where able to take out the network from the inside once they connected back to it."

40. I thought he was EXCELLENT..with Dana...and I'm not a Dobb's Fan....
the pictures from "Camp Crawford" with the "mowed down crosses and flags was incredibly better that what Whore Blitzer showed on his "nod to the Liberals" coverage on his CNN "Situation Room."

AND, Dana gave links to Ben & Jerry's site and others as part of the package. Plus there was a photo of the Toad who ran the crosses over and coverage of the folks trying to get Sheehan off her 6 x 8 plot of land.

They left out that Cindy has been given another plot of land and some other stuff...but given that they reported and showed "favorable pix" at all is a good step forward.

I don't trust these Cable Whores...but I try to praise them if they at least "try to be fair." Knowing that they will turn on us like snakes if Bush has a one point tick up in his polls the next day. :-(

CNN Cancels Dobbs Hysterical...Says Worm Attacking Internationally..."

CNN Cancels Dobbs Hysterical? Who's hysterical? Dobbs? CNN? There should be a verb in there, maybe.

It just comes out sounding surreal. Took me a minute to figure out the worm part.

Something like "CNN cancels Dobbs, gives bogus reason" would be more understandable, then explain in the body.

48. Well...just so you know "Sane Hubby" watched it with me and thought
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 07:40 PM by KoKo01
that all of it was "totally bizarre." LOL's so if "I" sounded bizarre it's because CNN's coverage of this was totally bizarre. They took a half hour out of Dobb's show to show their "CNN Techies" trying to do
Terra Worm Alerts" and switching back and form from German and Japanese Blogs to verify that this was a "Nationwide Problem" and that the "only way to deal with this is to "turn your computer off."

My hubby (the sanest man on the planet as far as I'm concerned walked into this and was as fascinated by the "spin" as I was...and I was cooking dinner..).

Only saying I had that damned CNN on for the whole show from 5:00 p.m. on until when Dobbs makes his "appearance" and it was "INTERNET TERRA ALERT!" that they canceled first part of Dobbs show for and they had their two "techies" going into great detail about how we users of "Win 2000" should all be heading for hidey holes.

My questions was: "Who in the hell on CNN or the Stock Market or the Government is back on "Win 2000?"

Given that I'm a Neandertal who still uses "Win ME" and my Business Guy Hubbies is an "XP" Fan, I wondered why CNN was spending all this time about a "Win2000" Problem?

It went on and on and on...and hubby and me are looking at each other in disbelief about what the CRAP Blitzer is going on about. We keep "channel surfing" and we don't see the usual hysterical Cable Suspects like MSNBC or FOX even talking about it!

It was a total disconnect that Blitzer is in a frenzy and no one else is.

That's why I posted what I did. I hope this explains it...but I doubt anyone has time to even read this VERY LONG...and maybe Boring post..

But, I did try to explain...

It's not a grammer nazi thing for me. It's about expressing yourself so that you are understood. If someone wants to be stylistic about how they express themselves, it's all good. But when understanding suffers, that's bad.

You're not normally like that. It was alarming.
