$40,000 donated to Crawford Peace House to pay the Mortgage !!!
Donations given to the Crawford Peace House are going to be used to pay of the mortgage!

from the Orlando Sentinel: "In one week, the house has amassed enough money to pay off its $40,000 mortgage."
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/0815-03.htm

Doesn't this seem wrong? That money be going towards the immediate cause, not paying off their house.

Is anyone else outraged by this? Think of what that $40,000 could have bought... it could buy tents for free housing, busses from a dozen cities, some could be used to hire locals to work at the camp (make locals happy)... but paying off the mortgage?

1. I think it depends
on who the money was donated to. Was it donated to the Peace House or to Cindy Sheehan? If it was to the Peace House themselves they have the right to use the money as they see fit I think.

79. CONFIRMED! RUMORS and BS! REMARKS TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT!
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 07:54 PM by anarchy1999
I just got off the phone with Johnny, his response tell them to "go get a life". I suggested something else but he stuck with that message.

All donations are going to supporting Cindy in her efforts. What he said was "enough had come in the last few days to pay off the mortgage.", not that he was going to.

Thank you one and all.

Please make this clear to everyone making this new round of BS an issue, please remember everyone, we are under attack in amazingly new ways.

106. Great news that they're not going to do that!
Hey that's great that this was BS. My intention was not to disgrace the Peace House but to stop what I saw as a travesty. I merely wished to make this public and stop them from misusing the $40,000 dollars. Cointelpro is real, and one of their tactics is to dilute the message, another is to siphon money away from true progressive causes.

fyi - there was also this post on the Peace House forum

Finance update PEACE HOUSE PAID OFF!
http://crawfordpeace.nfshost.com/node/496

maybe this was a freeper trying to piss people off and i took the bait. oops. But if that were the case then all the people bashing me would actually be siding with the freeper... hmmm.

that they'd pay off the mortgage.

...........

hey - if someone asked you what Cindy's all about, what do you tell them? where to you send them for info?

how about this collection of her quotes?
http://www.benfrank.net/crawford/quotes.html

folks- if you want to end this corruption NOW - then I'm with you.

if you want to ride out the next three and a half years... then i suggest you don't grasp the gravity of the situation.

Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 09:17 PM by merh
is not helping the cause - it is being negative and disruptive. We understand the gravity of the situation, I think others do too and that is why they try to create problems and question the efforts of others.

As I said, the money I gave can be used as the folks at the Peace House see fit.

I really don't care what the Peace House does with my $20 as it was given in good faith for whatever they feel necessary.

151. Why is this guy definately a freeper?
Because he doesnt have alot of posts and because he dared to ask this question? My husband as well as others I met at Camp Casey and I have been talking about this question for days, but I dared not ask it on DU because alot of people around here have gotten so irrational when it comes to all things Cindy it is unreal.

Im strongly in support of Cindy, but this mentality around here has gotten absolutely insane. People are allowed to ask questions, ya know? They are allowed to state their opinions. Atleast they should be.

And perhaps some people dont agree with the way certain things are being handled. It doesnt make them freepers, it makes them people with opinions that just might differ from yours.

have any of you been to the OP's site? http://www.benfrank.net/crawford/

Pretty freaking elaborate for a freeper.

You guys seem to think that if any discussion is had, it somehow negates or destroys Cindy's whole effort... Do you really think that the republican dittoheads arent going to ask these questions? Do you really think just circling our wagons and sticking our fingers in our ears is going to miraculously make them go away? Maybe.. but most likely not.

So make 9 million posts about how its cool if they used the money to pay off the mortgage.. but stop attacking people and being so paranoid that you think everyone is out to get you, setting some type of trap to ensnare Cindy supporters in and destroy the cause..

129. travesty? get real
Did anyone put limits on what their donations could be used for? Did anyone say they're not going to donate if not used for "such-n-such"? Besides which, the Peace House has bills to pay and they ARE giving their resources (man power, electricity, water, food, phone lines, internet connections, etc.) in support of this protest.

Why should anyone be expecting to have any "say so" whatsoever over which expenses donations are spent on? Do most people have the expectation to be able to tell other charities not to spend donations on buildings, research, or staff salaries? I don't think so.

130. Cool. I suspected that was the case. I think they were floored by the amts
of funds being donated and the support coming their way in terms of volunteers and equipment. Saying there was enough to pay off the mortgage was not the same as saying that they were going to do so.

At any rate, hope there are/will be sufficient funds to support Cindy's current efforts in Crawford as well as take care of the Peace House's short and long term needs.

113. Hey....Delay and Abramoff with Rove's Help would have paid the Mortgage
bought Cindy a Lexus, Paid a Farmer to build her a permanent house next to Bush Pig Farm, paid her divorce costs, had at least three spokespersons ranting about Cindy on CNN/MSNBC and Faux and given her free college tuition for her children.

What do you want...we Dems are poor but for the "most part" DO TRY to be honest.. Anything Cindy needs for food, water and health and personal services is being provided. It's important to keep a "Peace Center" in Crawford given that the "Emperor" has three more years to keep visiting his former "Pig Farm."

It's going to be a long haul with this. If Crawfor Peace House can become a place of "Resistance" against Bush where former Vets and their Relatives can come to make their views known, it's a WONDERFUL THING.

8. What's your problem?
The Peace House was established before Camp Casey and will continue after Cindy Sheehan has left. It's an ongoing mission that could definitely benefit from having its location paid for. Not only does it lower the short term monthly budget, but over time it will save thousands of dollars in interest.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Big step in moving into the big leagues.

You know, your argument reminds me of how the right-wingers tore down Clinton for shooting a $60,000 missile and hitting a tent in the desert. You know what? I think that argument was a poor attempt to muddy up the waters. I wish now we had hit more tents in Afghanistan back in the 90s, instead of spending 70 million hunting down a properly elected president.

I think that's a great use for the donations. It puts Peace House on a secure financial footing and the money they were spending on their mortgage payments can now be put to work supporting their causes. Not very long ago, they couldn't even pay their phone bill! I think it's wonderful news.

I'm sure there's some kind of board of directors or panel or group managing things for both the Peach House and Cindy's encampment, and I'm sure that group has reasons and methods for applying donations in the most effective manner.

You and I are not part of that governing body, nor are we privy to their financial details, nor is it any of our business. If you're afraid they might not apply funds in a way you approve, don't send them anything.

26. No, of course it doesn't seem wrong. What do you mean, hire locals?
Hire locals to work at the camp?

As I'm sure you know, the Peace House has been giving people sleeping space, providing water, bathrooms, kitchen facilities, parking, you name it. Which is probably why you don't want their mortgage paid off.

The Peace House is an important place and it was really struggling. From everything I've read, the people there have been gracious and welcoming hosts to visitors, not just recently, but for years.

I sent my money free and clear, to do with as they see fit. I don't give a good goddamn if they decide to spend the money on the biggest lobster dinner ever, I really don't. When I give to a cause, I give freely and I don't worry about what they do with it.

That said, a group as fine and upstanding as the Crawford Peace House will use the money appropriately, whatever that appropriate choice happens to be.

60. It's right on their website. They are clear about where donations go
http://www.crawfordpeacehouse.org/membership.html

Join the Peace House!

Your donation goes to cover the mortgage payment, utilities (Green Mountain Energy), phone, future web expenses, ongoing improvements and house maintenance, promotional items, signs/banners and other rally items, food and drinks for events, advertising & office supplies

Their mortgage is likely one of their biggest expenses. It's a smart move to pay it off and avoid having to pay all of that interest. The money, that would have gone to interest, can now be used to support the Peace movement.

For decades into the future, Crawford will be a destination known as the President's Summer and Winter Home (even if he sells the place).

And right there in the midst of it is the Peace House. Hopefully, the Peace House won't be sold. Hopefully, it will be maintained.

This was/is an impromptu peace effort. It is terrific that the effort can be commemmorated with something permanent.

59. that's great! If I'd known that they were under mortgage stress...
... I'd have given them a bigger check when I donated last year. Also, I didn't know until the Cindy Sheehan coverage started that they were so low on cash that they couldn't cover their phone and electricity bills. I guess they figured their donors were giving their max and didn't want to squeeze them. (There are plenty of other charities which do not hesitate to ask for more money -- these people are shy and retiring, by comparison!)

I'm glad that they won't have mortgage payments hanging over their heads, and can now focus on supporting Cindy and planning other peace and education events. Given what's happened at other non-profits I know, I wouldn't be surprised if the organizers had been spending their grocery and rent money on mortgage payments. That kind of thing is extremely stressful on an organization, and it can't be kept up for long. Imagine what might have happened if the bank lowered the boom and shut them down, just as thousands of people were converging on the place? It would have been total chaos. It's good to know that their future is now somewhat secure.

63. Paying off the mortgage is the best thing they could do
with the money. This way, no RW banker can pull it out from under them because they're 20 minutes late with a payment, they save all that interest that they would have had to pay and money coming in now can go for all these things without having to worry about the roof over their heads.

67. It's a smart move financially too
Which saved them thousands of dollars in interest payments. Consider, most notes are around 5-8% interest rates, with 30 year terms. That's $3500 for the first year in interest on a 54k note. Amortize that over the course (the remaining 29 years) of the note and the savings is HUGE by paying it off.

Glad to see whoever is handling the finances at the Crawford Peace House, knows what they are doing!

they either say exactly what they want their money used for or they actually want the recipient to use it in the manner that it deems.

Obviously, in this case, either the donors said "put it on the mortgage" or else they said nothing.

Did you specify with your donation as to where you'd like for it to go?

$40,000 is a pittance. Every little bit helps the cause. And just at the right time.

Camp Casey doesn't need wheelbarrows full of cash. People there are making a sacrifice and are glad to do it.

When we raised $50k for Andy it scared the shit out of them. They are terrified of our grass roots efforts and they are trying to discredit the Crawford Peace House and the people that run it in the same manner they did Andy. The big difference was, Andy was too sick to be able to defend himself -- Crawford Peace House is a group of committed patriots and progressives.

i believe that's what this thread can be described as, readers with the ability to reason can reach their own conclusions. note the repeated character assassination- do you treat all new posters this way?

Of course paying off the mortgage is best for the Peace House, but what is best for the movement?

Do you remember the Ukranian Revolution last November? They had big numbers by now, they had a fully functioning tent city- which is what that $40,000 should have gone towards.

This talk about a "long three and a half-years" - impeach NOW- that's what the $40,000 is for. Cindy said Bush is "about to be fired" - that and ending the war NOW- not digging in for the long haul.

All over the net people have been asking 'how do we donate to Cindy' and they are directed to the Peace House. I have not once seen anyone ask, how do I donate to the Peace House?

All over this board I have seen DUers hurting for cash, even asking each other for gas money. How many more DUers would head to Crawford if free busses were offered, like the right wingers who brought people last Saturday?

Your outrage was misplaced.

There's no reason for you to continue to try to stir this pot.

I'm going to alert the mods and ask that this thread be closed since your OP was not true.

121. No, Im not outraged...
And Im glad to see anarchy posted that this was BS, because frankly it has been bothering me a little. Ill be honest and say it. It's obviously not popular around here to question anything related to this... but I'd feel remiss if I wasnt honest about something that has been causing me some concern. And Ive spent the last 2 weekends there. Im not from free republic.

It doesnt bother me that they would pay their mortgage off if that money is left when all of this is said and done. I dont care if they spend it on a vacation. I dont care if they wall paper the place with it. I just hoped that no large checks like that would be cut prior to the conclusion of this, as I think it would be better kept in reserve for a legal fund, bail money etc.. until we atleast make sure this town meeting is gonna go okay.. if not till Cindy leaves Crawford. Bail for 100 people can get a little expensive and honestly, that is more important to me when it comes to THIS event which is the reason all of the donations were sent.

The people at the peace house are great, but I do want to say one thing, and Ive been saying it since day one. If you go to www.gsfp.org you will see that they are also asking for donations. I choose to donate to them for a few reasons.

1.) Cindy lost her job because of the absenses fighting this battle. Doing what she does would make it rather difficult to hold down a 9-5.

2.) That other stuff that is going on that everyone jumps down your throat if you mention. I'd like to know that after this is said and done, Cindy still has the means to take this fight to Washington and beyond.

3.) I didnt see anyone work as hard as Cindy. I swear that she must have huged and shook the hand of 90% of the people there. She did not get sick of it, she didnt tire. And I know that without the peace house, without any of us, it would be her that was sitting there in a ditch, alone of need be, demanding answers.

In anycase, this post is not meant to ruffle feathers.. but honestly my main concern, priority and support is to Cindy and her message and the future of that message.

DU?

Just wondering - we have raised quite a good bit since we began the other day. Hmmm, that other place really has trouble with its fund raising I have heard. :freak:

116. Ben Frank, you are so money! (In a liberal sense.)
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 09:24 PM by LoZoccolo
You're so money and you don't even know it! You are the man as far as being liberal, matter of fact you are so liberal that you are progressive and you shouldn't even call yourself liberal, but progressive instead! And even then you are more progressive than most other progressives, so you are on the left edge of progressives, and even more left than all of those!

Please let us know from time to time, when you have spare time from being progressive, how we also can be more money (again, in a liberal sense). You. are. the. man. The progressive man.

You the man!

As a matter of fact, I should say you are the person, but you should correct me first before I do that, because you are the person!

124. That was really cute, I actually laughed outloud though the constant
attempts to keep people from donating to worthy causes is getting pretty old, its rather simple, if you can't donate dont, if you can, by all means please do, and again if you cannot donate money, time is just as valuable for every worthy cause...

They are using a lot of resources to support the camp, and they could use the money they'd save on interest.

donated, I am not upset in the least if they pay off the mortgage. As I understand, they have been doing yeoman's work.

I was at a Democratic Party meeting here tonight, and convinced almost everybody there to go home and give to the Peace House.

I want them to have a War Chest of a half-million or so by the end of August!

Generic, yes a large sum of money in donations has come in, I have no idea what that amount is. Whatever it is, it is not paying off the mortgage on the Peace House. That is the lie.

I've got to go to bed.

See you all in the morning.

147. Ah... I just misunderstood!
And, I would NOT have been offended had they paid off the Peace House!

I would have considered that to be a great use of the money.

So, when this current effort is over, I will send them a donation specifically FOR paying off the mortgage.

154. The article say they amassed enough money
to pay off their mortgage. You are taking it out of context and twisting that to mean they ARE paying off their mortgage, which is apparently not true.

Next time, before you start more nasty rumors, please be more careful. Now all we can do is try to put out the fire that you started. Thanks.
