Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 11:05 AM by no_to_war_economy
listening to the replay last night of Mike Malloy ... Cindy was talking about how when she got there, the peace house had a $3 dollar balance and now it is $90,000.00

THAT IS NOT ENOUGH

if you haven't donated yet, please give 5, 10, 15 or just a buck!

edited to fix dollar amount, one too many zeros in the cents

6. I hope they have a good tax lawyer.. It would be a shame
if they get into tax trouble due to the donated $.. There are enough wackos out there who will try to stir up trouble for them, and I hope they are prepared.. Remember how they went after Andy when we donated to him?? That was minor compared what they will try to do to Cindy & Peace House.

17. I am sure I will get flamed but...
If they have $90,000 why do they need more? What is the point of collecting a huge sum of money? Shouldn't they be using it for the protest?

Joan Baez is coming and needs a stage set up. They could hire more bands, or at least pay for their trip there.

Cindy said that they need tarps. I would think $90,000 pays for alot of tarps. She, and everyone supporting her, should have everything they need. Isn't that what the money is for?

Why aren't we taking a cue from the idiot anti-truth protesters and chartering buses for people? The idea is to get as many people to Crawford as possible, isn't is?

19. Why haven't they rented a van or motorhome for Cindy?
"Camp Casey coordinator Ann Wright has issued an appeal. The van that has been used recently to accomodate media interviews is being called out of service and there is now an immediate need for a replacement. Anyone interested in loaning or providing such a van for use by Sheehan should call Wright at 808-741-1141. She explained that this need is somewhat urgent."

20. Maybe you should go down there and find out, huh?
I WAS there and if you've ever had to stand out in 100 degrees of blazing sun all day, with torrential downpours threatening you at any moment, you'd know why they need tarps. They aren't staying at the Crawford International Conference Center, you know.

Is there anything else you wish to add to the conversation?

I think the point he was making IS.. that's an awful lot of money. What are they doing with it? His suggestion was: Buses.

Understand that the Other Side will make hay with this, "The Crawford Peace House will do anything to keep the money flowing in", is the nicest thing they'll say.

Also, I don't want to give the freepers ANYTHING ELSE to open their filthy maws about.

26. anarchy1999 also suggested people donate to tonkawa falls park
in crawford they have the tonkawa falls park that is in dire need of help
the town doesnt have the money to do this and so the park is in some need

this was brought up because people wanted to thank crawford for all its doing to help support this cause
so anarchy spoke with kay (perhaps from the peace house?) and suggested if people want to donate to thank the people of crawford that one good way is to donate to clean up/maintain this park

just a thought im passing along

45. I'm here. I've been thinking about it most of the day and was waiting
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 05:25 PM by anarchy1999
to see if there was any more response. I think if we want to follow through we should send the donations for the City in Care of The Peace House so that it can be delivered by Kay (director of) and Hadi, Johnny and Cindy and maybe a DU'er. Also by sending through the Peace House we will be able to keep track of what is collected and given to the City of Crawford.

Just my thoughts.

As to the bickering about how the money is being spent I'm pretty tired of it. I've known them for several years now and trust me the checks are being written fast and furiously covering all different kinds of expenses as they arise on a day to day basis. I'll check in with Kay re buses, but it's really not like they are easy to find in Waco/Crawford, believe me, I was the one who did the research last Friday.

As to we should be shuttling people who are coming from Austin and Dallas and so on and so forth. They are scrambling for volunteers to take care of everything as it now. Too bad we can't just manufacture us up a couple 3 or 4 drivers.

Thanks everyone for everything you all are doing.

Just heard from another DU'er, they are providing a RV for Cindy to use, will be arriving tomorrow or Friday.

49. To late to edit above message, but here it is:
on edit:
I know for a fact that families wanting to come and needing help to get there are being assisted. I picked up a mom and her 2 daughters last Thursday from Boston under just those circumstances. They were not going to be able to come and then expenses were paid and they made the trip.

Every evening they are holding a meeting on needs and meeting those needs and believe you me they change from hour to hour.

Also I have not wanted to post this but I'm going to go ahead. Here's is my understanding of what is happening with monies collected. All needs to support Cindy are being taken care of and when Cindy leaves if there is anything left she is going to leave it to the Peace House as a thank you and to help keep the Peace House going. We still have a few years to go and many more protests!

That way, the renovated park would be a continual reminder of the positive things that Cindy's actions accomplished. I've heard reports that the Peace House people are trying their hardest to minimize impacts (cleaning up trash, etc.) but this would really send a message. It would also help counter right-wing complaints that liberals are a bunch of rich elitists who won't help people in need unless it benefits them directly.

Count me in! Just tell me how to donate.

53. I only get to talk with Kay early in the mornings before she leaves for
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 08:52 PM by anarchy1999
the House, she suggested this idea this morning when I called her to say there was talk of collecting donations for equipment for the high school football team. I'll talk with her in the am, but as I said above I believe it would be best to filter through the Peace House allowing for us to know the sum given and so that credit is truly given where credit is due. If checks just start flooding city hall with donations how could we be sure of what and from whom, would the city ever shoot straight about it?

I wish you all could have heard the conversation. She said hmmm, you know what the City of Crawford really needs help with?

No, what?

They really need help fixing up the park at Tonkawa Falls. They've had to close the old building where the restrooms are, you know the one, right?

Yes.

Now that would really knock their socks off.

I've spent several different Saturday's there and she is right. The park could really use some help and Lisa, it would allow a lasting pleasant reminder of when we all came to town in August of 2005. If I remember correctly the building and the park was a WPA project and it really is a beautiful little place. The falls are very nice.

So, I'll talk with Kay in the am if you all really want to get behind this and see how she'd like to see it handled.

In regards to spend thriftiness, just this morning she was talking about how she is one to always squeeze the last penny out of a nickel and bargain shop and this has been a rather frustrating time because of the immediacy of some of the needs that come up daily, she doesn't get to bargain shop and find the best deals as much as usual. She has helped Johnny to keep the Peace House running on an absolute shoestring since it was founded and there are no two more honest people on the planet than these two.

I hope that all DU'ers take the opportunity to find her and give her a hug and tell her thank you. She deserves it.

54. presenting the city with a large sum, all at one go ...
Would likely have more of an immediate impact than the arrival of many small donations, spread over weeks or months. As you say -- it's easier to keep track of (and for officials to notice). Plus, they could start the work right away, without having to wait for all the money to arrive.

I can only imagine the conversation! You guys are geniuses! This genuine support for the town shows up the Karl Rove style of PR for the empty spin that it is.

A small "Renewed In Memory of Casey Sheehan" plaque, if it's possible to place one near any WPA documentation, might also be nice?

I'm confident that my donations so far are being used in the most effective way possible ... I haven't had the pleasure of meeting or corresponding with Kay, but I know people like her -- they seem to be able to keep organizations running on, not even shoestrings, but cast-off butcher twine and rubber bands. (We've joked that if they ever got a chance to run the government, they'd manage to feed and clothe the entire country AND put the budget into the black so quickly ...)

As you noted, they are probably agonizing over not being able to get the best deals because they need a lot of stuff, right away ... but I trust their judgement entirely. I've been in that kind of situation myself, and it's always a balancing act, between "how much does it cost", and "how soon do you need it?"

58. This makes me so happy. Thanks to all who are taking care of the logistics
I wish so badly that I could be there to take the lead on this and let others attend to more pressing issues. I believe this is very important. I know one thing I can do. If it comes together and those who can give, will...and the funds are certain to go toward restoring the park ( or any other Crawford community need-but I like the park) I will flood every media outlet possible with the news. That I can do. I have no money. We are both unemployed at present. we are educated and experienced, so soon, we WILL be okay. Thing is, I can't afford to come to Crawford and I can't donate. But as long as they don't "turn the current off" as my mother used to say, I will type my fingers off to get the word to the world that we give a damn about people, no matter if they don't give a damn about us.

i understand we can send funds to the peace house to be forwarded for the park restoration

i was just wondering if there was a way to coordinate it or should we just go ahead on our own and make individual donations

coming from you would likely go further than any of us
so if you want to post a separate thread (if you havent already im just logging on now today) that would be great

65. Morning all. I just talked with Johnny (founder of CPH)
I wanted to clear this through them before we started anything.

Johnny asked for us to hold off until this afternoon. In the past the only department that would accept anything from the Peace House was EMS dept (the mayor and city are not fond of us). He is meeting with the gentleman in charge of the park this afternoon and he will get back with me, Johnny said he would love to see it happen if they will only accept.

Johnny asked me to express his sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to everyone here that have been helping. It has really meant alot to him and to the Peace House in their efforts to help Cindy and Camp Casey.

Thank you from me as well. I'm so proud to be a part of such a great community of caring individuals.

68. this'll be a long-term effort
Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 02:51 PM by Lisa
Since it's not an ultra-urgent matter (next to organizing the camp move, accommodating new arrivals, and all the stuff that the Peace House people have on their plates right now). No probs. Once things have settled down a bit, we can keep on thinking about how to do this. Just to echo what earlier posters mentioned -- with so many visitors in town, and uncertainty about how long they'll be staying, city officials are probably a bit edgy right now. Perhaps they'll mellow out a bit once they realize it's not the end of the world, and that everyone means well. (My town is fairly liberal, and we're set up for lots of tourism, but even so -- if we had a large number of people arriving for a protest, the council would likely be a bit standoffish too.)

A longer timespan for the project means we could approach veterans' groups, gardening clubs and businesses, etc. -- besides being good for the fundraising, a broad coalition would demonstrate that this wasn't political point-making but a genuine desire to help the community as a whole.

Here's a nice article I found, about Lady Bird Johnson's efforts to beautify communities. She believed strongly in this kind of thing, and for sure she wasn't a troublemaking hippie/communist!

""Ugliness is so grim," Lady Bird Johnson once said. "A little beauty, something that is lovely, I think, can help create harmony which will lessen tensions.""

"Lady Bird also saw her beautification projects as helping soothe the nation at a time when the Vietnam war, civil rights and other highly charged political topics fomented division. Lady Bird believed that a cleaner, more beautiful country could calm people and bring them together."

71. We can do this together when the time comes. I agree with the idea that
at this moment, it is a perfect idea, but not urgent. I hope Cindy's mom will be okay and she will be able to return soon. America needs her.

60. Well, duh! Why doesn't the chief pResident of Crawford, Texas
donate the money for the upkeep of the park if the town doesn't have it? Why did he ever allow it to fall into disrepair in the first place? Oh, wait...

Re >>in crawford they have the tonkawa falls park that is in dire need of help the town doesnt have the money to do this and so the park is in some need...<<

I'm not saying Peace House and/or Camp Casey shouldn't donate the money, but there is something very ironic and revealing about it if they do.

69. precisely! :)
If there is to be a commemorative plaque, wouldn't it be lovely to have Casey Sheehan's name on it, as a permanent reminder? (Even if his team did think of this, it would take quite a bit of goading to get Mr. Bush to come through with the funds, I suspect. He likes trees and waterfalls, but if they're not on his private property .... not as much.)

This would be a legacy that everyone could enjoy, not just the special friends who are invited to the Bush spread!

35. I think they should keep collecting money, but funnel it mostly
toward chartering busses, like you say, and getting the protesters tarps, and other things they need. I was a little taken aback, myself, that the Peace House, which will only be in the hometown of the (p)Resdident for three more years, paid off its mortgage with the first $40,000. I couldn't really understand that. But, I think that collecting money is good, and that that money should be used to get as many people down there, as possible.

And, message for those who always think that someone has to donate to have an opinion: BULLSHIT. That's not an argument, that's an attempt to not have to make an argument. Someone always shows up on donation threads and plays pay-at-the-door opinion police. What if I said that because you don't have a star by your name, you shouldn't get to voice your opinion on DU?

I, myself, would like to donate to the person who donated the land, as I think that that is probably the single most important thing that anyone, next to Cindy, has done. It's getting the protesters out of the ditch, and was a very gracious act. So, if someone could provide me with that link, I'd appreciate it.

38. I don't think the peace house should pay for charter buses to get
people there.
If a military family needs assistance, then by all means, help them.
But unlike the other side--we don't need "paid" bused in protesters.
One of the greatest parts of this is the fact that people are getting there! They are carpooling--other foundations are furnishing rides...but they are going.
I think it diminishes the message if the peace house basically paid people to be there. I think they can do better than that with their money.

29. You can donate your money at this address...
Crawford Peace House
P.O. Box 710218
Dallas, Tx. 75371-0218

Someone here last night was complaining about Crawford Peace House used $40,000 to pay off their mortgage. I think it was freeper pretended to be liberal and he only had 3 post. Anyway, he was trashed with major DUer's attacking him and I myself was very upset with his post and I donated again and many others did too.

42. I donated on line last week
whilst on business in Dallas. Then called some of my friends while waiting for my flight home at DFW, and talked QUITE LOUDLY about my donation.

One of the gate attendants (a gay man) became very, very nice to me after that. The other two (straight women) gave me overt dirty looks for the rest of the time I was at the gate.

I could not get to Camp Casey, but I helped as I could.

55. Was Gonna Give My Winnings to Cindy
I was going to give my winnings from my Las Vegas trip to Peace House. Alas, Lady Luck wasn't with me, even for a good cause. I wound up losing money. So, I Paypalled $100 to Peace House. If my husband and I can p*ss $75 down the toilet in the form of slots, we can give it to a good cause.
