Lies, Damn Lies, and Limbaugh's Press Release About Progressive Radio

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh, through his radio syndicator Premiere Radio Networks, sent out a press release titled "Limbaugh Leads the Race Against Liberal Talkers," purportedly comparing his ratings to those of progressive talk stations.

The release lists ratings info for five cities — Austin, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, San Antonio, and Memphis — for Spring 2005 (March 31 to June 22). In two of those cities, New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the stations that Rush claims he “defeated” didn’t switch to the progressive talk format until July 2005 — after the ratings period in question ended. Two of the other comparisons are also misleading. Rush claims to have won the ratings battle in Austin — but the progressive alternative is a low-watt station that broadcasts not out of Austin, but 20 miles away in bustling Pflugersville, Texas. The same is true of Rush’s performance in San Antonio, where the weaker progressive talk station is actually based in suburban Devine, Texas.

In other words, of the 591 stations on which Limbaugh broadcasts, he chose to highlight four where his “victories” are at best misleading, at worst plain dishonest.

The reality is that in several major markets, ratings for progressive talk are booming. In Denver, Air America’s ratings are up 500% from one year ago. “Seattle’s newly talk-formatted KPTK, doubled in the winter book, Portland’s KPOJ-AM grew 1000% in audience share. In conservative San Diego, KLSD-AM went up 73%. … Other markets with similar success include: Boston, Phoenix, Minneapolis, Sacramento and Columbus.” Rush is even on the verge of being overtaken in his own home state.

An even more interesting comparison is found when looking at stations with integrated lineups that carry both Rush and a progressive host. In that apples-to-apples comparison, we see that Rush Limbaugh and Ed Schultz are actually very competitive.

I'm not really a DUer. Used to be a FReeper but that was a long time ago. A year ago I swore off the political discussion forums for good: they are too nasty in general, and they were making ME too nasty in particular. Not that that's a judgement on anyone though, on any board.

Anyway, I wanted to post this with its own heading but the DU system won't let me: not enough posts on other threads yet to merit a thread of my own. So I thought about posting it here and see if anyone finds it worth reading and passing along to others. A few of my articles have been posted to DU before and this one, I've been more than a little curious as to what kind of reaction it might evoke.

A few days ago I got bothered enough about the argument that Casey Sheehan "volunteered" and therefore it was okay that he got killed, to write something about it on my blog. Here it is if anyone's interested in it.

My chief contention is that service personnel like Casey Sheehan volunteer to serve the Constitution and people of the United States. They do *not* volunteer to be the personal cadre of whoever has power over the United States government.

This is all I'm really planning on writing here about this. Like I said, I've given up on forums like this but this was one time I was wondering what others who are much closer to the Cindy Sheehan thing would think about this, and enough to send it to y'all's attention.

Am probably gonna attract some flak for doing this from some quarters. I'm not even a liberal Democrat by any stretch. Or a conservative Republican for that matter. Just chalk me up as an independent Christian :-)

EXCELLENT analysis of the Cindy Sheehan case! It is very thorough, especially the oath section and what it really means to be an American soldier. This sentence is very good: "Truly, they do believe that anyone who signs up to serve in the armed forces is cannon fodder without apology for whatever mad plot comes across the mind of George W. Bush." I know some people who think like this...that if you volunteered and you get killed, then that's your tough luck. Like, so what?

I believe that the American soldiers have been put in an utterly disastrous situation because of phony claims and lies by Bush. Our military should never have been sent to Iraq. When Sheehan says she wants to know why Bush killed her son, she says it very concisely and matter-of-factly because she knows that is exactly what he did to her son. He put her son in harm's way for a monumentally stupid and totally unnecessary war.

Shortly after hitting DU for the first time right after the 2000 election (hey, I'm a reader, not a writer), I also hit a site called FAIR.org - Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting. This site uses a writer's scalpel and surgically dissects Rush's "editorials".

Most of you guys probably already know about this, being the hip, bunch of savvy DUdes and DUdettes that you are. But if you *haven't* come across the site, do so if you have any friends or family that listen to Rush.

I had sent the site address to three friends of mine who listened to Rush with an almost religious conviction. Two still do- but one pal actually swore off Rush and has since registered as an independent after going to the site and then doing some further reading on his own. He now votes conservative on local issues BUT progressive on national and state issues (we can't have have everything). One outta three dittodeads ain't bad when it comes to Rush's audience of the walking dead.

Anyway... my point is, FAIR is a great site. It lists media-ownership, critiques stations and on-air personalities, points out inaccurate statements/stories, etc; *especially* when it comes to Rush. So if you have family members that use him as a source, use FAIR to work slowly, patiently (and civilly) to destroy Rush's talking points, one by one. While they may not swear off AM radio, it may lessen their confidence in their secular pantheon and set them up to actually begin questioning Rush's "news".
