Hurricane Camille - 36 years ago today

Camille, the Mother of all Hurricanes, 36 years ago today on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Her presence is still felt.

5. Hello Swamp Rat

I remember seeing some old Times-Picayune Photos of Betsy's work on St Claude Avenue. What an incredible storm. I'm going to the quarter on Friday. Think I'll swing by St Louis Cathedral and light a candle asking Mother Nature for a relatively mild rest of the Hurricane Season.

My mom lives a few feet from St. Claude and Esplanade. Maybe I'll pass by da house. ;)

I usually attend the Vodou ceremonies to turn the hurricanes... it worked for Ivan! :D

3. I was in Biloxi

six months after Camille....I couldn't believe the devastation. I remember that there was a pretty good sized freighter( 300 feet or larger) washed up across the highway from the beach. I also remember the steel street light posts being bent over to the ground in an almost perfect "U".

The beach was pock-marked with areas hollowed out by the storm and fish...especially sharks would get caught in the pools when the tide went back out. I used to have a picture I took of a young kid..maybe 3-4 years old....dragging a dead shark down the beach by the tail...the shark was probably 4 feet long.

I saw the remains of the hotel that got destroyed and where so many people died while holding their "hurricane party".

I've always thought Camille was the biggest disaster to hit the US...well, maybe until Andrew.
