The True Number of US Soldiers Killed in Iraq
While the U.S government tells us that 1,600 troops have died in Iraqi battles, the real number may be closer to 10,000. In order for the government to count a death as Iraqi war-related, the service member must die on Iraqi soil. If a wounded soldier is transferred out of the country, and later dies of his wounds (or dies in transit) - that individual is NOT counted as a war-related death.

Ask your elected representatives for the real numbers!

23. Because it is the death count from
only the ones who die in Iraq..not the Soldiers who are critically wounded and die in Germany or at home.

8. Maybe not true. Maybe partially true.
I did hear a former marine in Iraq call into Randi Rhodes one day and he confirmed that this was in fact happening. The death count is ONLY those who have died in Iraq. If they are wounded and then die after they are shipped to Germany, for example, then they are still in the wounded count. Randi said that she had heard this from other military callers. Regardless, I do not think we will ever know the truth.

22. The question of MIAs in Vietnam was surely important
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 03:49 PM by alcibiades_mystery
The "MIA" myth has allowed the US government to hide 2,000 additional deaths in Vietnam, as well as facilitating a bizarre Vietnam recuperation effort throughout the 1980's. The simple truth is that all unaccounted for in Vietnam probably died around the time that they went missing from US military duty, and the US government perpetrated the mad fraud of "live POWs" kept in custody after the war in order to make the Vietnamese, who were victims of US colonial aggression, into villians. Oh, of course this myth was also perpetrated by the right wing lunatics in order to accomplish a number of domestic political purposes, and by a wide variety of feckless hucksters, who defrauded MIA families out of millions on the basis of phony evidence and weird "freedom" trips to Thailand and other exotic places - all the while denying these families the closure they so desperately need, and feeding them hope that their dead relatives will be rescued from non-existent tiger cages - a sick lot of criminals, to be sure. There never were any live POWs after the release of POWs, with the exception of one turncoat who decided that he'd like to see Texas again after having deserted and served with PAVN forces. Strangely enough, the US has thousands of "MIAs" from World War II - or had thousands: the official policy was to label an MIA KIA if nobody could account for their whereabouts after the war. This policy was cravenly changed in the mid-1960's by Pentagon gangsters intent on punishing the Vietnamese: if your remains aren't found, and nobody saw you DIE, you were MIA, and remain MIA, the upshot being that the people of Vietnam are suddenly responsible for accounting for your remains. This has led to a number of absurdities, such as a pilot whose plane crashed in sight of an aircraft carrier in the South China Sea, and whose body was never recovered, being listed as MIA, with the government of the DRV on the hook for dredging up a body. Ridiculous? Of course it is, but good goddamn theater for Vietnam deniers and right wing hypocrites...

21. I know this has been debunked but
it is possible that there are deaths that occur due to medical complications that are not reported. I would not be surprised that a few died of infections etc who are not listed in the official lists;some of the injuries like burns etc but not more than a few. I also do expect that there are many MIAs this is a different environment from Vietnam and we have fewer troops on the ground.

27. There is a number of victims of PTSD who have committed
suicide and murder/suicide after returning, whose demise seems strongly linked to the Iraq war and, IMHO, should be listed in those totals. There will, no doubt, be additional victims but the rest of this misinformation is sneakily kept alive by the true foil meisters and the warped rabid r/w. I think the brain worms that compel people to infect the internet also make them want to keep us distracted-probably amusing to certain sociopaths. Wormy brains seem to be so frustratingly common in freeperland.

26. That number is not the dead
From what I understand, from conversations with people in the VA is that the number of wounded is getting close to about 14,000. When I say wounded I am referring to the number of disabled: blown off arms, legs, excessive burns, persistent infections.
