Vigil Report (Thread 2)
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 11:07 PM by Armstead
Putting this on a new thread as the other vigil report thread is getting quite large.

In Lenox Mass. about 60 people turned out for a vigil. Not a large number, but a good turnout for this small town. Plus there were numerous other vigils in otehr towns in Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts.

Good spirits, a mix of ages. Lasted about 45 minutes, and it attracted a number of passers by and even tourists visiting the town.

1. We had over 350 people in Durham, NC!
My 11 year old daughter was interviewed by the local abc news but I haven't seen it aired yet. They may not air it, she was very ANTI Bush sounding. She said she's against this war and that Bush is letting our soldiers die for oil, while he and his friends get rich. (Or something to that effect).

I'm trying to figure out how to post photos, I had an AWESOME sign that I made from SwampRat's artwork.

3. 250 in Santa Monica at Clover Park
LOTS of honking horns.
Children, dogs, healthy happy families, candles, good cheer--
easy to forget what it was all about. As somebody said though,
in this case there is little joy in being right.

7. About 450 people on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, California
among well over 2,000 people around San Diego County holding vigils in a dozen or so locations.

The North County Times newspaper and photographers interviewed and took pictures of my wife and her father on the beach, and we heard that they showed up at other beach locations as well, so we're looking forward to seeing their coverage of the events tomorrow morning.

Got a few dozen pictures - very impressive displays and a very large group. Very pretty, too, around sunset.

One sad note - a man spoke up during the vigil and mentioned that his son had just been killed in Iraq last week. He was near tears and brought many others to tears.

This damnable war has got to stop taking lives!!!

8. Chandler, Arizona checking in.
Pirhana and lady lib were at the Hunt Hwy/Lindsey event. There were 99 people registered - not sure of the final tally, but it looked like a good turnout. A few people driving by honked in support.

9. Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin
54 people showed up. That's a pretty good turnout for this area.

There was ONE (1) counter-protestor. Our hostess went up and offered to shake his hand in friendship and he told her that WE were desecrating our country and that we obviously "hated America". I didn't check but I'm pretty sure he had kool-aid stains on his shirt.

We stayed an hour...had trouble keeping candles lighted even though there was just a small breeze...got a lot of honks and thumbs up along with a few "Republican one-fingered-victory salutes." Good to bad ratio was about 3:1.

a pic:

12. South Pasadena - Just got home from the vigil!
At least 150 demonstrators herre in South Pasadena, which was great, considering there have been only about a half dozen at the weekly Saturday vigil lately.

Even better - I'd say about half the cars driving by (not to mention most of the big-rig trucks and busses) honked in support -- long and loud. LOTS of support here in South Pasadena, California.

18. "Over 50,000 people have signed up to attend 1,627 vigils"
From moveon's website. I bet more people showed up, than actually signed up at moveon too.

That's pretty amazing that at least 50,000 people went out tonight to support Cindy and protest the war. The Sept DC event is going to be HUGE.

19. Silverdale, WA Vigil--between 80 and 100 with 5 or 6 pro-bush people--
It was fantastic! People of all ages attended. I was surprised by the number of senior citizens there. We left after and hour and a half, but it was still going strong.

5 or 6 pro-bush people showed up with a sign that read "Give War A Chance" and a red candle.

Silverdale is primarily a military town and I was surprised at how many thumbs up and honks we received from people driving by. The organizer asked us to come back every Wednesday evening until bush meets with Cindy!

22. Santa Rosa, California - about 100?
I'm not good at estimating crowd size.

I took my son and we both were given candles, and keeping them lit was the main problem people were having!

I got to talk to one person who asked what this was about.

It was my son's very first peace demonstration, so I'm really proud of him for going, and other people also told him the same, he was very proud to be there, too.

29. about 150 in southeast Portland Oregon...
...one of many sites in PDX tonight. Another thread shows 1000+ at another Portland location. Here on southeast Division, ice cream eaters at the DQ had front row seats as heavy traffic responded to those 150 men, women, children and dogs in the vigil. Traffic was stopped up on the nearby freeway, sending many 18-wheelers through the vigil, and they raised a ruckus with their airhorns in support of us all.

Lots of Unitarians spied in the crowd, including clergy. It was so heart-warming. The power of the people to resist was electric.

36. San Jose represented!
We had several groups in San Jose, California. One was around 350 people and the one in my part of town was around 200 people. We had a few people flip us off and make booing sounds, but the OVERWHELMING majority honked, cheered, and waved to show their support.

37. Raleigh: Boylan Street Bridge Vigil
About 40+ were signed up online, 105 people and 4 dogs showed up. Everything was quiet and peaceful, people were all in very good spirits, happy and helpful with one another.

Local policeman was there early, spoke with one woman who turned out to be an attorney. He mentioned we lacked a permit, but it wasn't going to be a big deal. He stayed well off to the side to make sure we didn't encounter any problems.

People driving past were interested and generally supportive.

The Durham vigil was much larger and had more extensive media coverage. We had one reporter from a local AM radio station, which was still appreciated.
