At least six new variants of the virus hit the Web yesterday after the virus was unleashed on Sunday, said Fred Rica, a partner at the computer and information security group at PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Manhattan.
Several companies hit by the Zotob virus continued to show significant slowdowns on their Web sites, according to Keynote Systems Inc., a San Mateo, Calif., company that monitors Internet performance of sites.
ABC.com, for instance, took 24 seconds to serve up pages to users from 1 to 4 p.m. yesterday, longer than the normal response time of two to three seconds, but the site returned to normal performance by late afternoon, Keynote reported.
On Tuesday, however, the staff at ABC's "World News Tonight" resorted to handwriting and typing up copy on typewriters to supplement working computers, spokeswoman Cathie Levine said.
