NEW YORK CITY
Congress will examine health of 9/11 workers

8/18/2005

NEW YORK (AP) - Members of Congress will hold a rare hearing in New York City on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to examine long-term health effects for ground zero workers.
Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., will convene the hearing of the House government reform subcommittee Sept. 10 in lower Manhattan, aides said Wednesday.

The panel is inviting officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the Government Accountability Office, the Department of Health and Human Services, and Mount Sinai Hospital.

The hearing comes as the federal government is poised to take back about $125 million in unspent Sept. 11 aid that Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-Manhattan, argues should be redirected to caring for those with long-term health problems resulting from their exposure to toxic materials at ground zero.

1. This will be GOOD -- had to get the almighty Stock Market back up
even as people were exposed to toxic air. Shows the priorities of this administration ... Hope they make Christie Todd Whitman testify (after she told NYers publicly the air in Lower Manhattan was just fine).

2. How they lied about the air quality! The union members of the EPA
were furious about what the WH did too.
