Anyone here speak governmentese?
I came across this site (US gov. job opening):

http://federalgovernmentjobs.us/jobs/quality-program-manager-490310.html

The reason I ask is because I have a question regarding this statement:

Completion of DLA New Supervisor Certification Program by probationary supervisors:Required Selective Service: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, are required to complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service registration prior to initial appointment. Failure to comply may be grounds for withdrawal of an offer of employment or dismissal after appointment.

My question: Why 1959? If the current acceptance age is 42 years, oughtn't this read 1962 (2005 - 42 = 1963)? 1963 would include all male applicants born after December 31, 1962.

Did they raise the age again?

Typo, perhaps?

Or, am I misinterpreting something here?

Knowledgeable explanation would be greatly appreciated. Educated guesstimates, non-educated guesses, and WAGs also appreciated.

2. Thanks for the tip.
But, I had no intention of applying. My nephew graduated from college recently, and I've been watching job boards. I saw the brief description and was quite befuddled by the blurb. You know, the old..."WTF is that?"...So, I clicked, and read, and then, the math didn't add up....

Then I start thinking..."Hmmm....DOD reference....1959....Wait a minute...I'm 42...I was born in '63...What the HELL did I miss?"

You know, one of them moments. I figured if they raised the age and I missed hearing about it, someone here would be more than willing to correct my ignorance... :)

3. Maybe it's because you are old enough to have had to register.
Remember, they brought back SS in 1980...it doesn't mean SS is going to call you up, but it does mean you have to prove you obeyed the law and registered. Unfortunately, this has been a requirement in a lot of places for a long time.

4. Bingo!
Males seeking fed employment, military service, student loans, etc., must prove they registered if they were required.

Ok. Thanks. In some deep dark recess of my mind, I realize that, but I've never had to deal with it. So it's one of those details that gets lost until someone points it out and then you have one of those "Unhuh...Knew that."

Well, I thank you for helping me through my 'Bush Moment'.

6. No, but the current law required a start date to enforce Draft reg
Its been that Date on any USG Application I have ever seen. Its tied to a law somewhere saying they only hire you if you registered.
