It might be worthwile to review the differences between Democrats and Republicans in the 30s. This is from a site I found yesterday. It's written by a guy who, apparently, lived through the Depression. I dont agree with everything he says, but I find it all very interesting.

Here this guy's "ECONOMIC TRUISMS OF THE TWO PARTIES"


REPUBLICANS No economic intervention.
DEMOCRATS Intervene in anything and everything to get the economy going.

REPUBLICANS Federal funds are not for personal help.
DEMOCRATS Use massive Federal help for the individual.

REPUBLICANS Do not create Federal agencies for economic help.
DEMOCRATS Create whatever agency needs to be created.

REPUBLICANS Balance the budget.
DEMOCRATS Run a deficit as necessary for economic recovery.

REPUBLICANS Social security is not a function of the Federal government
DEMOCRATS Social security must come from the Federal government.

REPUBLICANS No foreign entanglements
DEMOCRATS Foreign entanglements as necessary for the defense of freedom

REPUBLICANS No personal or corporate taxation.
DEMOCRATS Personal and corporate taxation as needed to pay social costs.

REPUBLICANS Joblessness is not a Federal problem; it is the problem of the private sector
DEMOCRATS Joblessness is the problem of the Federal government since the private sector has failed to deal with it.

REPUBLICANS The Federal government has no right nor place to determine the rules of the private sector
DEMOCRATS The private sector has been proven to be unable to manage itself therefore the Federal government needs to establish rules of conduct.

3. Well, some of these are no longer true

REPUBLICANS Balance the budget.
DEMOCRATS Run a deficit as necessary for economic recovery.

- Democrats balance budgets in good times and run stimulatory deficits in bad times; Republicans NEVER balance the budget and run deficits as necessary for re-election without thought to stimulatory effect.

4. Clinton actually ran a surplus in good times, and didn't want

to give the money back in the form of a tax cut.

He saw that the current good times were illusory and that there were huge gaps that needed to be filled to make sure America had a secure tomororrow.

Notwithstanding the confused debate on this issue today, at least part of this is true.

The part that has changed is that Republicans want to run defecits so that all the New Deal programs can no longer be funded.
