On this day, August 19th, in 1934 Hitler was elected president of Germany: with 90% of the vote (as counted).
He had already, in January 1933, been appointed chancellor by president von Hindenburg and by February of that year – in response to the Reichstag fire – impelled von Hindenburg to suspend German’s civil rights and liberties to stem the supposed communist plot. Hitler then used the force of the government to silence his political enemies by intimidation or arrest.
After becoming president, he simply had them executed.
