Awww...Fundies worried about religious freedom in Iraq.
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 08:15 AM by tanyev
Guess Georgie's glorious adventure isn't going according to plan.

From the latest Family Research Council email:

Freedom of Religion?

The deadline for an Iraqi constitution came and went on Monday. A one week extension was granted with the anticipation that the October 15th election date for the citizens to ratify or reject a constitution can still be met. The country has been governed by the Iraqi Transitional Administration Law (TAL) since March 4, 2004. The TAL set the deadlines for the constitution and for the elections for a new Iraqi government on December 15, 2005. The TAL currently protects religious freedom for every Iraqi citizen.

However, early drafts of the Iraqi Constitution seriously undermined religious freedom by containing a provision making Islam the "sole source" of Iraqi law, as opposed to "a source" of law under the TAL, there is also a provision that declares unconstitutional any law "repugnant" to Islam. I have sent a letter to President Bush encouraging the Administration to redouble its efforts to ensure that the Iraq Constitution provides genuine religious freedom for all Iraqi citizens. An Iraqi Constitution that does not protect religious liberty will seriously undermine U.S. efforts in Iraq and the larger Middle East. The sons and daughters of Americans are not risking their lives to establish a theocratic government that denies its citizens the fundamental right of religious freedom.

1. "dammit, WE INVADED fair and square. So now, tell them what to do."
Because we can.

This is like the british writing our articles of confederation with directions on the proper respect to be shown to a King of England.

We caused this problem, and I suspect that without a future Saddam, it is now beyond repair.
Mission accomplished.

5. Just being nitpicky--
Dobson is Focus on the Family. FRC is Tony Perkins.

I know, those self-appointed RW moral watchdogs all look alike.

11. Ahh, you're right
Can someone come up with a nifty deck of cards or something? You know, "Know Your Fascists" with cards for the likes of Stupidhead, his administration and their henchmen? Michelle Malkin could be the Queen of Hearts.

These people just do not have a clue. In the type of Islamic government the Iraqis are discussing, "freedom of religion" is a totally alien concept. In their view, the few freedoms you have are grudgingly granted by The Invisible Thing In The Sky, and zealously enforced by his little self-appointed minions here on Earth.

I lived in an Islamic theocracy for two years (with our "allies" the Saudis). I've spent 2 months this year in Egypt, which isn't quite a theocracy but is over 90% Muslim...with constant pressure from some of the majority to become a theocracy (yep, just like here!).

During the last Egyptian trip, I even posted about how it was actually nice to NOT see one Fundamentalist Xian asshat doing phony faith healings on TV, or hear some power-mad geek like Dobson blathering about the wonderfulness of JeeZus.

Muslim countries know exactly how Xian evangelism works and they don't want any part of it. The only way Dobson will get permission to send in the Armies Of Jesus-Zombies to proselytize them is if American troops enforce it at gunpoint. And that's guaranteed to make us even more popular.

6. "Uh, FRC, uh,
"We f#@king told you so!" So did Brent Scowcroft and others. Said they would devolve into civil war over religion and other ethnic differences. But nooooo, they wanted to "bring democracy".

Personally, I don't think you can haul and spread democracy around like care packages tossed out to a hungry crowd. They aren't the same thing.

12. Right. The type of government that both best represents the
majority of Iraqi citizens and THE TYPE THAT THE IRAQIS WANT FOR THEMSELVES should be what we support. If we don't, then why, again, is it that we are over there?

14. That's not true, either.
Shia clergy and religious observances were repressed under Saddam. However, other minorities like Christians fared much better, religious discrimination wise, than they do today. What is happening is that the christians who go to the American funded and protected new evangelical churches are faring better than the established christian church members, many of whom are fleeing to a better life in Syria.

10. ITS ALL A FRONT...ITS ALL ABOUT oil.....We are there for the OIL
and if a war persists, exactly what Bush and his controllers want. Then they will invade Iran...big war? thats the goal, America will get Saudi too...peel off a couple hundred pesky insurgents then a couple million...the lack of oil will cause hundreds of millions to starve to death....maybe a billion or two....less peeeps, less usage of oil...more for the PUBs....thats how I suspect they see it...

19. I'm worried too
ANY government that denies its citizens religious freedom and in which there isn't strong separation of church and state is a danger, both to itself and to its neighbors.

I blame BushCo for not thinking with their big heads before they kicked over the hornet's nest that is Iraq.
