"U.S. CHURCH WORKERS DETAINED IN CHINA. Authorities in northern China detained five American church workers in raids on unofficial Protestant church groups, a Texas-based monitoring group, the China Aid Association, said yesterday. The U.S. Embassy in Beijing said it was investigating the report."

1. Have a friend going to China next month to do some teaching.
She had to sign forms that she would not do any religious teaching, no evangelism at all... Said the forms were pretty specific, no wiggle room. Evidently China has had some people there under false pretenses of late.

4. a common trick by the fundies

A game they've played for a long time. It's part of their ends-justifies-the-means ethics, or lack thereof.

5. With fundies of all religions, there is always an ulterior motive......
and it has nothing to do with anything 'good'.

6. Authoritian governments hate any religion they can't control
The key words in the article are "unofficial Protestant church groups" - the police busted the missionaries for not playing by the government's rules. In China, the official religion is atheism, with some tolerance for small sects of other religions as long as they're firmly under the government control.

China, like any other authoritarian regime, has no tolerance for any movement that it can't control, religious or not. Look at how the Chinese government kicked the crap out of the semi-religious Fulan Gong movement, how they've been persecuting Tibetan Buddhists for decades, and how they've been oppressing the largely Muslim Uighar people in Xiangiang province.

While it's hard to shed tears because some tongue-speaking, proof-texting, holy-rollers got their chops busted, think how you'd feel if it was Quaker missionaries or Buddhist monks.

8. Wait, you're supporting China's suppression of religious freedom?
Why are you assuming they're fundies?

One thing for sure--the Chinese government is comprised of freedom-hating assholes.
