Like most war zones, some areas are "hotter" than others. Just like Vietnam, if you were stationed in Saigon, Vung Tau, CamRanh, Nha Trang, you were able to see and experience the war in a different way than if you were on the DMZ or Khe Sanh or the Ia Drang Valley. The same situation is applicable to Iraq. Those troops in parts of southern Iraq and northern Iraq are in situations very different from those surrounding Baghdad. Outside the "green zone" and in the neighboring towns, it is hotter than other areas. So GIs that say things are "better" than it is being reported are probably not in the Baghdad area. Other than a few discomforts and the faint possibility of a carbomb, they are not that bad off. The warzone is mostly in and around Baghdad - at least until the Marines move to other areas of the country. Trouble follows Marines like night follows day. Figure it out.
