If they can attack a mother who has lost a son in the war, is anyone exempt from their attacks? People such as Howard Dean and John Kerry and Hillary Clinton are easy targets, whenever the right-wing are permitted by the media's assistance, to attack the mother of a dead soldier.

IMHO, the phrase "are permitted by the media's assistance" is important. I've been screaming this for a long time. And that's the whole point of having a VOLUNTEER military force. People sign up willingly, without coercion.

When the VOLUNTEER army sees this kind of hate, accusations and name-calling, what's going to happen to their interest? Suddenly, it goes out the window. Who wants to VOLUNTEER for that crap? To get killed, to have your mom treated like a piece of garbage, to have her be forced to live in a drainage ditch for 3 weeks, just so she can get some answers?

I was thinking about Arundhati Roy this morning and remembering her speech Instant Fix-Imperial Democracy that she gave at the Riverside Church a while back. I went looking for the transcript of this speech, but can't find it on the web anymore. It was powerful and directed toward Bush.
