Holy Shit!! I love Paul Krugman -- Cant believe this is in the NY Times
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 05:33 PM by BigBearJohn
In his recent book "Steal This Vote" - a very judicious work, despite its title - Andrew Gumbel, a U.S. correspondent for the British newspaper The Independent, provides the best overview I've seen of the 2000 Florida vote. And he documents the simple truth: "Al Gore won the 2000 presidential election."

But few Americans have heard these facts. Perhaps journalists have felt that it would be divisive to cast doubt on the Bush administration's legitimacy. If so, their tender concern for the nation's feelings has gone for naught: Cindy Sheehan's supporters are camped in Crawford, and America is more bitterly divided than ever.

Meanwhile, the whitewash of what happened in Florida in 2000 showed that election-tampering carries no penalty, and political operatives have acted accordingly. For example, in 2002 the Republican Party in New Hampshire hired a company to jam Democratic and union phone banks on Election Day

Our current political leaders would suffer greatly if either house of Congress changed hands in 2006, or if the presidency changed hands in 2008. The lids would come off all the simmering scandals, from the selling of the Iraq war to profiteering by politically connected companies. The Republicans will be strongly tempted to make sure that they win those elections by any means necessary. And everything we've seen suggests that they will give in to that temptation.

{emphasis added by me}

12. And remember the stories about paid GOP activist Nathan Sproul
and his "America Votes" organization?

You know, the folks who were allegedly registering voters in swing states; and destroying the registration forms of the Democrats?

Hmmmm. Funny how that investigation disappeared, too.

There were so many stories like this in the weeks before Nov 2nd, yet no one in the media followed up on any of these crimes.

18. I love him too and "I love you man" for paying close attention to fraud.
This is the time, the tipping point has arrived. People want to know, how did this idiot get elected. Well, here's the answer, he didn't.

I've been saying for months that when * went below 40%, the election fraud issue would emerge. It has. Thank you Paul K.

Or EVERYTHING will come out and I don't think they need the elections to keep power, they have many options now that we have crossed the Rubicon. IMHO.

21. Thanks so much for posting this. I talked to my Dad this afternoon,
and casually mentioned to him that I'd be sending him an e-mail regarding 18 statistical improbabilties that you'ld have to believe in order to believe that the 2004 election wasn't tampered with (posted here at DU) and that I thought it would convince him about exit poll data, etc that I'd talked about incessantly (email and long distance) post election. Dad always gave me the impression that it was tin-hat conspiracy theory, but he'd agree on some points. He asked if I'd read the article in the NYT by Paul Krugman? I told him I hadn't but would, and he said it addressed these issues. Right, I thought! But it's TRUE! This is wonderful. I noticed that there are several threads in regards to this. Keep it kicked.

24. Krugman knows how these criminals think
I heard Krugman on the radio a while back giving a speech somewhere and he was really laying it out for the audience. He knows, way more so than he can say in writing in his NY Times column, that these sub-humans in power in the White House are an immediate and dire threat to this country.

Talking of Krugman, the thing I liked most about his recent "intelligent design" column was that throughout the whole piece he never capitalized intelligent design -- always rendered it in lowercase. I think you know why. Please remember that if you are ever writing about it. No caps. You'd be amazed how many people just automatically capitalize it without realizing it.

27. Some excellent comments on the Krugman Op-Ed can be found here:

And, tonight, Maureen Dowd delivers the second home-run of the week:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4403833&mesg_id=4403833

We will prevail, my fellow Americans, as long as you demand the evidence that your vote is counted exactly as you intend.

"NOT ONE LINE OF SOFTWARE BETWEEN YOUR VOTE AND A VALID ELECTION"

Peace.

35. Not much point voting
if the EVMs aren't dealt with. Rush Holt's HR-2239 was virtually ignorned in the House. Howard Dean suggested citizens gather signatures to put mandates on their state ballots by which only machines that can do a paper recount may be used in the state. SOMETHING must be done before 2006 or the cheating will go on and on and on an on ...
