And I spent so much time on my reply! So I'll post my reply here.
In response to the bad locked thread which shall remain dead in the bowels of DU:
This entire thread implies that the BushCo goons who are at fault for the mess we're in should be blamed because they're Jewish and support Israel - and the implication is that their views somehow represent ALL Jews who support Israel - or even Israel itself!
Let me exaplain why that premise is wrong and shows bias. First of all, the vast majority of Jews are both Liberal and Democrat.
http://www.jcpa.org/jl/vp509.htm Secondly, the move toward the right in Israel followed substantial numbers of terrorist attacks - an echo of our own move toward the right after 911. In Israel, as in the US, this is a time limited response predicated on the situation which prompts it. No terror, no support for right wing whack jobs who want to kill everyone. In contrast, the neocon agenda is independent of terrorism.
Third, many Jews don't even support Israel.
http://www.adl.org/presrele/IslMe_62/2495_62.asp Forth, neocon is pretty broad. I've been called a neocon in my Republican days, and I'm definately not Jewish. Heck, I'm not even conservative (heh). I'm moderate. And I don't support the purported neocon agenda. The term neocon is as faulty in identifying people as any other blanket term.
Fifth, it's the responsibility of the President to squash the wackier ideas by his staff - and every Presidential staff has plenty of crazy ideas that should never see the light of day. Clinton did it. But this President wanted Iraq for himself and his oil buddies, so he enlisted neocon aid. That marriage was a disaster.
Sixth, this thread implies that the neocons, all by themselves, can just decide to invade Iraq and it's a done deal. Not so. By the definition used in this thread, Bush is not a neocon. Why do Bush and Cheney get a free ride in this? AIPAC has a lot of power, but not enough to have carte blanche. Neither did the neocons.
Seventh, this thread implies that Israel is not our ally and somehow wants America destroyed. Even the neocon whack jobs delude themselves that what they're doing is in America's best interests. Israel is the biggest recipient of US aid of any nation. Our interests ARE Israeli interests and they have no desire to see us destroyed. Oddly enough, they see a strong America as essential to their security. And despite some of their less than stellar actions, Israel is still an ally and only second to Britain in her reliability as such.
Eighth - the idea that Israeli spying is as bad as Russian spying in the cold war. EVERY country spies on the US, including our closest allies. Britain has been caught spying. We just don't make a big deal about it because they're an ally. Spying isn't the issue - it's what they're likely to do with the info that determines the seriousness of the leak. I can think of a lot of countries who could do a lot nastier things to us than Israel, who is dependent on our aid. I'm not condoning it, but I'm not in a panic about it, either.
Ninth, this thread implies that Israel supports and lobbies for what the neocons are doing. Do we even know that? Is Israel to blame for the actions of every Jew in the world? By that logic, I guess America should be punished because we caught some American terrorists in Afghanistan. Heh - march Bush to the guillotine to pay for John Walker Lindh and bomb Cleveland because Bush attacked Iraq when there were no WMD.
Tenth, this thread implies that Israel herself reflects the neocon agenda, and it doesn't. Even assuming that Sharon supports the entire neocon agenda, which is a big assumption, Sharon is not unopposed in Israel. He's had to make a lot of political sacrifices to stay in power.
I could go on, but that's a start as to why I see bias in this thread...
What we've got are some seriously deluded whack jobs in Washington who think they know how to run a country, but obviously (REALLY obviously) don't. Their ignorance is getting a lot of Americans killed. Their criminality should land them in jail. But the buck can and should stop in the Oval Office of the White House. IMO, this is yet another attempt to divert responsibility from Bush and toward someone else. How Rovian.
There! Now they can lock this thread, too. ;)
