Do you encrypt your email today ?
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 01:13 AM by MazeRat7
Here is why:
http://www.canada.com/windsor/windsorstar/news/story.html?id=906ecfe4-1adc-45e2-998d-cb5c96f01fb2

Granted this is bad for our friends to the north, but it is/has been going on here in the states for some time, thank you Patriot act.

If you don't, here is how:
www.gnupg.org
www.pgp.com (if you like paying for things)

If you don't understand any of this.. then for now I suggest getting in the habit of talking to friends/family in email like you would to a stranger on the street.

1. I recommend Hushmail.com
Its got free encrypted mail, but the service doesn't offer enough space, so I just pay for the service, its like $30 a year. YET you should be aware that encrypted mail can ONLY be sent to other people using accounts that permit encryption!!!

3. Definitely ...

I've been encrypting my e-mail since the 80's. Stuff I don't really care if anyone reads often doesn't get encrypted, but I won't carry on an extended discussion of any personal matter through e-mail without encryption.

I realized the need for this in high school while playing around on Unix system. A friend broke into the system's e-mail server, allowing us to view archived e-mails to and from various administrators, and it took him less time that it takes me to boot my machine nowadays. (It wasn't that hard, actually. He was playing around and realized the idiot sysadmin, a guy we knew and hated, had used his last name as his password for root.)

Anyway ... For the truly paranoid like myself, I recommend the open source version. The rumors about backdoors in the commercial PGP code may be unfounded, but the point is no one knows. The OpenSource version is regularly scanned various people for things like this, and anyone with the ability can review it.

5. Install GnuPG in your e-mail client.
I use GnuPG, not for every e-mail, but for any business e-mail.

Unbreakable.
